SUMMARY:
Mass media claim that food insecurity, climate change, environmental degradation
are natural processes. We say that the global economic system is at fault.
Voices calling for the re-design of NAFTA & WTO are getting louder.
At this crucial moment it is worth remembering that the rules of the game were changed with the founding of the World Trade Organization in 1995. The first challenge to the WTO occurred in Seattle in 1999. This program from the TUC Radio archives brings you some of the visionary voices who foresaw the consequences that we are facing today. Then they were lone voices. Today a growing movement is calling for a radical re-design of trade rules. A new poll from the Pew Research Center finds that a majority of Americans now oppose trade agreements such as NAFTA and the WTO. In the 2006 election 37 congressional challengers replaced NAFTA-supporting incumbents.
The International Forum on Globalization, the IFG, helped organize the resistance to the WTO leading up to Seattle and beyond. The speakers in this program are affiliated with the IFG:
Maude Barlow is national chair of the Council of Canadians, Canada's largest public advocacy organization, and founder of the Blue Planet Project. She was one of the first activists to call attention to the fact that a handful of corporations are gaining control of water world wide. She has co-authored an international bestseller Blue Gold. Her newest book: The Blue Covenant, was published in 2008.
Jose Bové is a goat farmer from the South of France and member of the Confédération Paysanne. He had become aware of the power of the WTO when trade sanctions were imposed on French cheese, including his own roquefort. He went on to become a folk hero in France for opposing MacDonalds and genetically modified seeds. He ran in the first round of presidential elections in 2007, garnering almost 1/2 million votes.
Dr. Mae-Wan Ho is a geneticist, biophysicist and director of the non profit Institute of Science in Society. With more than 30 years of research and teaching in biochemistry, evolution, and molecular genetics, she has become an eloquent critic of genetic engineering. Mae-Wan Ho has authored or co-authored 10 books, such as The Rainbow and the Worm, the Physics of Organisms, Genetic Engineering Dream or Nightmare?, and: Living with the Fluid Genome.
The Indian physicist and ecologist Vandana Shiva founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, in 1982. She co-founded Navdanya to promote biodiversity conservation, organic farming, the rights of farmers, and the process of seed saving. Shiva has participated in the movements to save the forests (Chipko) to prevent the flooding of land by hydro projects, and the impositions of genetically modified seeds. Shiva's books include Biopiracy, Stolen Harvest, Monocultures of the Mind, and Water Wars. Her many awards include the Right Livelihood Award, also known as the "Alternative Nobel Peace Prize."

A guide to Congress and the press
David Ray Griffin's most recent book: 9/11 Contradictions, was published in March 2008. The book, and this speech, take a new approach to finding the truth about the events of 9/11. It focuses entirely on contradictory statements made by members of the Bush administration, government departments and agencies, and the 9/11 Commission. All the statements examined by Griffin are official claims in direct conflict with other official claims. How could this be? And why, if the government pronouncements are contradictory, haven't members of Congress and the mainstream media launched investigations to determine which stories are true and which are false?
Griffin begins with two official White House versions of the timeline at George W. Bush's stay at the Florida school on the morning of 9/11. He also covers Osama bin Laden. To this day he is named the instigator of the 9/11 attacks. Griffin examines the absence of hard evidence for bin Laden's involvement.
The retired theologian David Ray Griffin is one of the foremost authors in the movement that is challenging the official story of the events of 9/11. His most important books are: The New Pearl Harbor, disturbing questions about the Bush administration and 9-11; The 9-11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions; and Debunking 9/11 Debunking: An Answer to Popular Mechanics and Other Defenders of the Official Conspiracy Theory. Moved by the mounting evidence of dangerous
health effects of radio-frequency radiation and electromagnetic fields
a group of internationally acclaimed scientists collaborated on the August
2007 Bioinitiative report. They reviewed over 2000 research publications
and raise concerns about the safety of existing public limits that regulate
how much exposure is allowable from power lines, mobile phones, and other
electronic devices.
The report received prominent notice in the European press but
was ignored by the US commercial media. The Environmental Agency
of the European Union contributed to the report with a section on the need
to apply the precautionary principle. The EU agency supports the demand
to come up with new and stricter public exposure standards for electromagnetic
fields.
Contributors to the Bioinitiative report gave a presentation at
the San Francisco Commonwealth Club on March 19, 2008. Among the speakers
are: Dr. Bill Grant, member of the Commonwealth Club’s health and medicine
forum; Dr. Magda Havas, Associate Professor of Environmental and Resource
Studies at Trent University, Canada; Cindy Sage, environmental consultant
and co-editor of the Bioinitiative Report; and Dr. David Carpenter, Professor
of Environmental Health Sciences and Director of the Institute for Health
and the Environment at the School of Public Health at the University

SOLUTIONS TO THE GLOBAL TRIPLE CRISIS
In September of 2007
the International Forum on Globalization held a Teach-in in Washington
DC on climate change, peak oil, global resource depletion & extinction.
At the end of the three-day event proposals to resolve the crisis were
made By Ross Gelbspan, Susan George, and Walden Bello.
Ross Gelbspan is a Pulitzer Price winning journalist, climate
activist and author of The Heat Is On and Boiling Point. He says that
the speed of global warming has blind sided all of us. The first warning
by James Hansen came in 1988. 20 years later scientists tell us we are
at, or have passed, the point of no return. All this came from one degree
of warming. We can no longer burn coal and oil. Susan George is chair
of the planning board of the Transnational Institute, <www.tni.org>. One of her recent books
is: Another World is possible if.. (Verso 2004) Susan George proposes
a new Keynesianism, not military but environmental this time, that could
bring about a massive conversion to eco friendly industry and alternative
energies and resolve the looming recession that we are facing at the same
time. Walden Bello is professor of sociology at the university of the Philippines
and leader of the anti corporate globalization and peace movement. He
is cofounder of Focus on the Global South, <www.focusweb.org> based in Bangkok,
Thailand. His book, Dragons in Distress, is widely regarded as the classic
that predicted the collapse of the East Asian economies later in that
decade.” He puts the triple crisis in the context of capitalism and the
policies of globalization and growth. An 8 to 10% growth rate is ecologically
criminal.

False Solutions to Peak Oil and Climate
Change
In September of 2007

Several Panel meetings addressed the many false
solutions to the climate crisis that may be accelerating the
danger rather than alleviating it. Coal for example is now promoted
as a substitute for oil and promises for the capture of the carbon
are made that are not yet possible with current technologies and may
never be available on a large scale.
Dr. Hermann Ott is head of the Berlin office of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. He is the co-author of the book: The Kyoto Protocol International Climate Policy for the 21st Century. From the Appalachian mountains came Mary Anne Hitt. She lives and works at the center of one of the large unreported ecological tragedies of out time. In surface mines, some the size of New York's Manhattan, whole mountain ranges are blown off to strip mine the coal. Mary Anne Hitt is Executive Director of Appalachian Voices. Jutta Kill is a climate campaigner and activist
for FERN, an NGO based in Europe. A participant in the Durban Group's
critique of carbon trading she eloquently describes how the system favors
large corporations and will prevent a transition to renewable energy
production. Dr. Arjun Makhijani argues against the resurgence of nuclear
power. He holds a Ph.D. in engineering, specializing in nuclear fusion,
from U.C. Berkeley. He is the principal author of the first study ever
done (and completed in 1971) on the energy conservation potential in the
U.S. economy.

On occasion of
the 40th anniversary of King's murder
WHO KILLED MARTIN LUTHER KING?

Pepper at the Memphis, TN, King Assassination Trial

In 1977 the family of Martin Luther King engaged an attorney
and friend, Dr. William Pepper, to investigate a suspicion they
had. They no longer believed that James Earl Ray was the killer.
For their peace of mind, for an accurate record of history, and out
of a sense of justice they conducted a two decade long investigation.
The evidence they uncovered was put before a jury in Memphis, TN,
in November 1999. 70 witnesses testified under oath, 4,000 pages of
transcripts described that evidence, much of it new. It took the jury
59 minutes to come back with their decision that exonerated James Earl
Ray, who had already died in prison. The jury found that Loyd Jowers,
owner of Jim’s Grill, had participated in a conspiracy to kill King.
The evidence showed that the conspiracy included J. Edgar Hoover and
the FBI, Richard Helms and the CIA, the military, the Memphis police department,
and organized crime.
The finding of the jury should have shaken the world. However
news of the verdict, in one of the most important national security
trials in modern history, was suppressed. And to this day, with very
few exceptions, the public does not know that this trial took place and
what the outcome was.
This TUC Radio program presents an archival recording never
before heard: Key parts of the closing argument in the courtroom in
Memphis on December 8, 1999, by Dr. William Pepper. He describes why
King had become dangerous to the powers to be, parts of the local conspiracy,

OUR ELECTRIC BODIES AND THE EVER THICKENING ELECTRO-SMOG

Our bodies are finely tuned and responsive electric organisms and the super-imposition of an ever thickening layer of electric signals from cell phones and towers to WIFI to other communications systems can interfere with our innate electric life within our cells, nerves, immune system, heart and brain.
Dr. Neil Cherry said that electromagnetic fields are intrinsic to us. But today we are living with exposures from technological sources up to a million times higher than those from the sun and other natural sources and we give little thought to what that is doing to us. Cherry was Associate Professor of Environmental Health at Lincoln University, NZ. He died in 2003 of motor neuron disease.
Henry Lai is research professor in the department of bioengineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is often quoted as the first to have written how DNA breaks can occur under exposure to electromagnetic radiation. Each DNA molecule contains the blueprint for life. When both DNA strands break and the DNA dies or mutates the person can develop cancer, Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.
More recently Henry Lai became know as one of the authors of the Bioinitiative report. <http://www.bioinitiative.org> Published in August of 2007 the report made it to the web site of the Environmental Agency of the European Union. The European Union agency suggests that we need new and stricter Public Exposure Standards for electromagnetic fields from power lines, mobile phones, and many other sources of EMF exposure in daily life.

Vandana Shiva had just witnessed the arctic melt on Greenland and speaks eloquently about the destructive forces of globalization that are driving the ecological crisis. She also sheds light on the effects of rapid economic growth in her home country, India.
Maude Barlow has completed a new book, entitled: Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and The Coming Battle for the Right to Water. She explains how we are losing water through pollution, over-pumping and displacement while the demands for water are rising. She names the corporations that are in the process of capturing water sources – the new Blue Gold.
Daphne Wysham of the Institute for Policy Studies speaks on the World Bank’s destructive role in driving climate change. She lays out in great detail how the system of carbon trading came about and how the World Bank is funding destructive development in fossil fuels - and she talks about solutions.

The EXECUTION of Martin Luther King

Bill Pepper became James Earl Ray's lawyer when he found out that Ray was not the murderer. His friendship with King and his family goes back to 1967. Pepper had gone to Vietnam and taken photos of children burned by napalm. King asked to meet with him and they worked closely together during the anti-Vietnam war phase of King's life. In this recording Pepper explains why he became convinced of Ray's innocence and, during 25 years of investigative work, pieced together the plot to kill King. The extraordinary story has implications for history, civil rights, justice and democracy. (Feb. 2003)

Peter Dale Scott
THE ROAD TO 9/11
Peter Dale Scott is a former diplomat and Professor Emeritus of English at the University of California, Berkeley. He has written on 9/11, the CIA involvement in South East Asia, the drug wars, and the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He also is an accomplished and much published poet.
His most recent book: The Road to 9-11, Wealth, Empire and the Future of America, was published by the University of California Press in late 2007. Reaching back to the 1960s Scott gives evidence of cover-ups of domestic criminal acts and momentous secret decision making by an ever smaller number of players. He investigates how policies of Presidents since Nixon have created the background for 9/11. He also shows how US intelligence agencies have become involved in groups they backed or created, such as the Taliban and al Quaeda.
Peter Dale Scott spoke about his new book in September 2007 at Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s bookstore, City Lights.

THE THREAT OF WAR ON IRAN
When Daniel Ellsberg released the Pentagon Papers in 1971 they revealed the US Government's lies about the war on Vietnam. 35 years later Ellsberg received the Right Livelihood Award, the so-called alternative Nobel Price, for “… dedicating his life to inspiring others to follow his example.”
For the last 6 years Ellsberg has campaigned against the exercise of executive power by the Bush administration. He calls for action to end such Presidential violation of the constitution and to prevent an expansion of the war in the Middle East and an attack on Iran. He urges government insiders to come up with the new set of Pentagon papers, to act now and not wait until they write their memoirs. The American public needs to see the current attack plans on Iran in order to prevent a terrible expansion of the war in the Middle East.
He voices criticism of the new democratic congress and their support – with few exceptions - of the Kyl/Lieberman amendment of Sept. 2007. This bill designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization. Opponents of the amendment are saying that it could be used by Bush to attack Iran.

LIES, WAR, AND EMPIRE

In Part one of this talk Parenti speaks about lies, dissent, and how we arrive at the truth of our situation and still retain our sanity. In the second half of his talk Parenti raises the question whether the Iraq war was not a failure but a success for some parts of the empire – and why.
Michael Parenti is one of the nation's leading progressive political analysts. He is a prolific author and an engaging speaker. After receiving his Ph.D. in political science from Yale he has taught at colleges and universities, in the United States and abroad. He serves on the board of judges for Project Censored and is the author of twenty books. The most recent are:

ABRUPT CLIMATE CHANGE AND OUR FUTURE
Dr. Thompson issues a warning that the mountain glaciers he knows and loves are melting ever more dramatically just within the year of 2007. He is the leading expert on glaciers with 30 years of on location research.
Dr. Lonnie Thompson saw one of the first ice cores that was recovered from a glacier when he was in graduate school. He was fascinated by the amount of data on earth history, past climate and world changing events that can be read from these ice cores and made the exploration of ice his life's work. He now teaches in the Department of Geological Sciences and is Senior Research Scientists at the Byrd Polar Center at Ohio State University.
In three decades he has explored most of the mountain glaciers of this world, has learned their history going back tens of thousands of years via the ice cores he and his team drilled at altitudes that no helicopter can reach. He came to San Francisco in early December 2007 to issue this warning.
Thompson was the honored speaker at the December 2007 meeting of the American Geophysical Union. The hotel where Dr. Thompson spoke recorded the event for the AGU. This is the only other audio or visual record of this amazing talk.

Thierry Meyssan
A EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVE ON THE US WAR ON TERROR
Thierry Meyssan is a French author and political activist. He is the founder and director of Voltairenet.org a network of non-aligned press groups. The multilingual website on international affairs gets as many as 2 million visitors a month. <http://www.voltairenet.org> In July 2005, the US State Department published a document declaring Meyssan and his Voltaire Network as major sources of anti-American misinformation in the world.
Shortly after 9-11 Meyssan wrote two books: "The Big Lie" and "Pentagate", calling into question the official story of that day. While dismissed as conspiracy theory by US Homeland Security, "The Big Lie" was translated into 28 languages and "Pentagate" became a bestseller.
In this interview Meyssan gives a fascinating view of the United States from a European perspective. In a conversation with radio journalist Jeff Blankfort Meyssan talks about the US design and control of the War on Terror. He also speaks to the consequences for Europe of the threatened attack on Iran, secret CIA prisons, and the hidden and ongoing history of US intervention in European affairs.
Ambiance alert: Blankfort met with Meyssan on September 3, 2007, in a restaurant in Paris opposite the Gare du Nord. During their one hour conversation the place became more and more lively.

Cynthia McKinney
CONFRONTING EMPIRE
The former
Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney was invited to England
in September 2007. She spoke about Martin Luther King and
the plans for him to become the running mate of Bobbie Kennedy
in his bid for the US presidency.
She was introduced by Annie Machon
who quit her job at the British spy agency MI5 in protest
over MI5 plans to assassinate the Libyan leader Muammar Gadafy.
In 1992 Cynthia McKinney made history
when she became the first African American woman to represent
Georgia in the United States House of Representatives.
McKinney voted against record Bush
administration military budgets, and challenged the Pentagon
to explain how it "lost" over $2.3 trillion in un-traceable
transactions. She continues to decry the Bush administration's
sweetheart deals with Halliburton, the Carlyle Group, and DynCorp;
and she speaks out against the loss of fundamental freedoms under
the Bush administration.
McKinney lost her congressional seat
when an estimated 40,000 Republicans voted in the Georgia
Democratic Primary to oust her. It is called "crossover"
voting and her supporters filed a lawsuit against this practice.

Dr. James Hansen
THE THREAT TO THE PLANET
How can we avoid dangerous human-made
climate change
Dr. James
Hansen is one of the few scientists who have consistently
warned that the impact that humans have on the climate is bringing
about changes that are faster than we ever believed and may be
irreversible if action is not taken now. Hansen is Director of the
NASA Institute for Space Studies in New York City, and he teaches
at Columbia. Since the late 1970s, he has worked on studies of the
Earth's climate. He has run afoul of government censors since the
1980s. Repeatedly his testimony before Congress was suppressed or
re-written.
Hansen says that the unprecedented and rising
amounts of greenhouse gases added each year AND the speed at which we are
altering the energy balance of the earth are completely out of the range
of proven earth history of hundreds of thousands of years. Hansen fears
that we may soon be reaching feedback mechanism or tipping points such as
the melting of the ice sheets that has already begun on Greenland and West
Antarctica.

WITNESS TO THE MELTING OF
GREENLAND
An Inuit elder speaks
Recorded in a tent during a rainstorm

in the Valley of the Ancients
on Greenland.
For two weeks a small group
of five constructed the ceremonial fire pit for the 2008
second circumpolar meeting. Inuits from Canada, Greenland,
Siberia and Alaska, who live along the Arctic Circle, will
gather again to consult on how to alert the world to the enormous
changes in climate that they are experiencing already, changes
that are forcing them now to fundamentally alter their lives. The
accelerating melt of the Greenland ice cap may eventually lead to
sea level rises around the world up to 7 meters or 21 feet, drowning
the cities of London and New York.
The Inuit elders, who had chosen
the ceremonial site, were joined by two North Americans
and one Canadian. They pitched their tents on the tundra below
towering rock mountains and the glacier behind. In the distance
a river, swollen by the accelerating melt, discharged mud and
boulders into the ocean. Lakes of melt-water are forming on the
top of the ice cap and that water has found its way to the bottom,
causing the glaciers to slide faster and swelling the rivers.
After five days the group got
weathered in for 24 hours in fierce cold and driving rain.
Cien Fuegos, the North American, invited Ithluk to tell her
about Greenland and how the Inuit are experiencing the change
of the climate.

Walt
THE ISRAEL LOBBY AND U.S.
FOREIGN POLICY
John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago and Stephen
Walt of Harvard, have written one of the most controversial
articles in recent memory. ‘The Israel Lobby,’ originally
published in the London Review of Books and on the web in March
2006, examined one of the most taboo issues in America: the impact
of the Israel lobby on U.S. policy.
The authors say that “the
response to the essay was breathtaking. Three month
after the posting the (web site) recorded more than 275,000
downloads”. There was also a media campaign condemning the
article and the authors in the Jerusalem Post, New York Sun,
Wall Street Journal, New Republic and Washington Post.
Now Mearsheimer and Walt
have expanded the essay into a 500 page book entitled,
The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy. They argue that the policies
encouraged by the lobby are profoundly damaging to both America's
national interest and Israel's own long-term security.
Mearsheimer and Walt spoke
in Berkeley, CA, on September 19, 2007 at an event organized
by Tikkun magazine and Cody’s books. Introduction by Rabbi
Michael Lerner in Part TWO.

Edward Said:
PALESTINE AND THE UNIVERSALITY

This is a special tribute on the anniversary
of the death of Edward Said. Friends say that
he knew that his life was coming to an end when he gave this
legacy address on the eve of the invasion of Iraq.
Professor Said was known as both a scholar of modern
literature and an expert on Middle Eastern politics. Educated at Princeton
and Harvard
he taught at Columbia. His books,
which have been translated
into 36 languages, include: Covering
Islam, and The Politics of
Dispossession. He was born in Palestine
before the founding of the Jewish
State. By 1950 his extended
family had all fled Jerusalem for
Cairo. Like hundreds of thousands of
Palestinians they were displaced
by the Jewish state that had
been established two years earlier.

A FAREWELL TO JUSTICE
Jim Garrison, John F. Kennedy's Assassination,
and the Case That Should Have Changed History
- a new investigation of the assassination

New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison was the only public official to have indicted a suspect in President John F. Kennedy’s murder. Biographer Joan Mellen met Garrison in 1969. His relentless search for the truth about who killed President Kennedy made a deep impression upon her. In 1997, five years after Garrison’s death, Mellen started to work on the story of his life. Her biography turned into a new investigation of the assassination itself.
Joan Mellen spoke in New York in January 2006 - a few weeks after the release of her book: A Farewell to Justice. She found new evidence in the National Archives' JFK Assassination Records Collection and conducted more than one thousand interviews, with many witnesses speaking out for the first time. Joan Mellen names those responsible for the assassination and shows how the cover-up began in New Orleans months before President Kennedy was shot in Dallas.
Joan Mellen is professor of English and creative writing at Temple University in Philadelphia. She is the author of seventeen books, ranging from film criticism to fiction, Latin American studies and biography.

The JFK Assassination and the Gangster Nature of the State
When Oliver Stone’s movie JFK opened in December 1991 a huge PR campaign was mobilized against the film. Even progressives spoke out. Noam Chomsky wrote in support of the Warren Commission's findings – in contrast Michael Parenti gave one of his highly acclaimed talks criticizing the lone assassin theory.
The bitter questions that haunted defenders and critics alike was whether government agencies of a democratic country would do such a thing as assassinate an elected President.
In this talk Michael Parenti turns to that question first – he examines, in part one, what he calls “the gangster nature of the state.” In part two he goes over details of the assassination and critiques The Nation, The Progressive, Chomsky and Cockburn. He spoke in Berkeley, CA, on the 30th anniversary of the JFK assassination.
This is one of many "standing ovations" talks by Parenti. The master for this program was lost and this appears to be the only copy of the original recording.

A large industrialized country already gets 10% of
their electricity from renewable sources. And
if the present rate of conversion is maintained, this
country will have phased out nuclear and fossil fuels
within the next 50 years. And this country, Germany, is not
even blessed with abundant wind or sun. Germany, for 15 years
now, has shown the determinations to move away from centralized
to decentralized power, from commercial to non-commercial
energy production, and to come up with solutions to climate change,

At the root of these developments is the German Renewable
Energy Act, the EEG. It started as a one page
act passed by the German parliament in 1990.
It was simple and based on three concepts: Free access to
the grid to all producers, the obligation for utilities
to purchase, and guaranteed fixed prices for each producer
in accordance with their cost of production and state of technology.
The lead author of the Renewable Energy Act is Dr. Hermann
Scheer, chairman of the World Council for Renewable Energy,
now serving his 6th term as elected member of the German Parliament.
