A personal letter from TUC Radio and Maria Gilardin
Greenfield, January 2, 2009

For 17 years TUC Radio and I have survived on donations and odd jobs that I was able to fit in between deadlines. (As a project of one person TUC is not eligible for grants.) Magically donations each year were just enough to keep us alive. There is no savings account or retirement plan for me. Wisely - as it now turns out - I invested the annual surplus of about $2,000 in straw, clay, recycled doors and lumber and built over seven years the two room straw bale house in Northern California where I now live - free from "luxury" but also free from a mortgage.

The house is intimately connected to TUC Radio. It is the studio where the calls of ravens or jays may get on recordings, and my refuge where I can live independently and inexpensively and afford to continue to give away all my programs for free.

My neighbors and I are responsible for our own electric, water, firewood, even 26 miles of dirt roads that connect us to each other and the town below. The only service provided by "civilization" is my 4 mile long telephone line that can easily be cut by rooting pigs or falling trees, and my shared satellite dish for the internet. Even though some of this is daunting there is great comfort in knowing that when systems on the outside world break down we keep on the lights and the fire in the stoves.

For the first time in 17 years TUC Radio ends the year of 2008 in debt. The solar system that I'm now using to produce radio cost $6,200. 27 of you gave a total of $3,800. I owed $2,400 to the credit card company when I made an e-mail appeal on Dec. 27 that got a good first response.

Feb. 1, 2009: I want to thank everybody who donated so far
to the solar system fund. You gave me an amazing $4,875
since early 2008. Take a look at the photos of my house
and the solar panels and enjoy what you did for TUC Radio and me!

INTEREST NOW COMES DUE ON THE BALANCE OF $1,050.
Today, February 1, two donations came in.
Here is my thank you note to Patrick - who has given before.

Dear Patrick,
You are saving me from the fangs of the credit card company!
I'm sending this while the morning sun is filling up my solar system batteries.
Country life is amazing - each turn in the weather affects me directly.
And each donation does too - thank you!
Maria
