This independent radio web-site has been offering broadcast quality, noncommercial and free programming since 1992. Please donate to help me keep it free and open to All! ![]() TUC Radio's Facebook site is open while I keep working on it - and it turns out that I'm unable to post audio files after Facebook changed their format and jumbled my layout. I'm looking for help to fix this. About TUC Radio and Maria Gilardin: We became independent radio producers before the age of computer editing and internet distribution. Alternative Radio and WINGS were my inspiration. David Barsamian presents most of the really famous names in radio, Frieda Werden works with and for women. I decided to focus on themes such as globalization, corporations, ecology, Native Nations and climate change. Once I sat in a restaurant and opened my mail. When I told the waitress that I was going to order a desert after all because I had just received a check with a donation she said that she wished to live like I do, with so much trust in the kindness of strangers. Please remember that you can affirm that trust and be that stranger whose gift will have an immediate effect because I live that close to the edge. Now, in May 2011, I have just a little over $900 in the bank and in twenty years my balance has never been higher than $7,200. Nevertheless in 19 years I have not missed a single program. To make it easier for you I have greatly reduced my cost of living in the past year. The nearest restaurant is almost an hour away and now I grow much of my food. I live in a sustainable, hand made straw bale house that protects me from summer heat and winter cold. I use solar panels and pay for no electric, or water, or sewage or garbage collection. But I do pay land taxes, road maintenance fees, and propane for cooking. Then there are the costs related to TUC radio: telephone, postage and internet; and I pay for this web site so I can give it all away for free. Please help TUC Radio and me! Maria Gilardin PS. In 2011 Mary Olson published a briefing paper on the fact that Women as a group suffer significantly more from the impact of ionizing radiation than do men. There is a dramatic fifty-percent greater incidence of cancer and fifty-percent greater rate of death from cancer among women, compared to the effects of the same radiation dose level to men. He was an expert witness on the Three Mile Island partial melt-down, and more recently on the serious safety risks at the Vermont Yankee and California's San Onofre reactors. He and his website at Fairewinds Energy Education <www.fairewinds.org/> became well known and respected after the Fukushima accident for his often weekly updated reports. Gundersen was
recorded by Pacifica Radio at the Fukushima Symposium in New York City
on March 11, 2013. On the second anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear
disaster, scientists and researchers met in NY City to cover the vast
field of nuclear construction and safety, and the range of radioactive
isotopes that continue to be emitted at Fukushima. They presented
studies on the impact of radiation on human health, our food, on plants
and marine life. And they explained the mechanisms by which radiation
will continue to disperse, literally across the world while at the same
time bio-accumulating in plants, living beings and soils. The two day
event was organized by The Helen Caldicott Foundation and cosponsored
by Physicians for Social Responsibility. Gary Nabhan

Birthday His most famous plays, the Threepenny Opera and the Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny were just two of over sixty plays. During the war years, Brecht became a prominent writer of the "Literature in Exile". He expressed his opposition to the National Socialist and Fascist movements in his most often performed plays: Mother Courage, The Good Person of Szechwan, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Fear and Misery of the Third Reich, and the Life of Galileo that he revised after the dropping of the atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. One of his most searing, funny, frightening and historically accurate plays against Hitler is the The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. The play presented all major Nazis, as well as their supporters, masked as members of a Mafia operation. The play followed precisely the stages of the Nazi's seizure of power and posed the most important question: Could Hitler's rise have been stopped? On

<http://ourchildrenstrust.org> Michael Parenti THE ONE PERCENT PATHOLOGY AND THE MYTH OF CAPITALISM 30 second Preview/Promo Part ONE 30 second Preview/Promo Part TWO Dr. Michael Parenti gave this keynote speech for the 4th Annual People's Movement Assembly at Evergreen State College, Olympia, Washington in October, 2012. He talked about economics, neo-liberalism, globalization and the history of capitalism. Parenti spoke and wrote about these topics long before most other academics dared mention – and much less critique –capitalism, the chosen economic form in the US, and really the world. Raised in a working class Italian family in East Harlem, New York City, Parenti went on to receive his Ph.D. in political science at Yale in 1962. His academic career was cut short by his dismissal after he was arrested for protesting the US war on Vietnam. Parenti became an independent scholar, lecturer and author of over 20 books. And he remained an activist as well.

Ward Churchill In the
first of two parts Churchill sets out to prove that the numbers of how
many Indians lived North of the Rio Grande were cooked - not one
but about fifteen million. Part TWO ends with an extraordinary
statement on the importance of knowing history: "We got an entire
society here that, with its own collaboration, quells certain knowledge
that would disrupt its very convenient scenarios of what it wants to be
by denying what it has been... And so we punch holes into the
domes of false reality that have been constructed to shield the society
from an understanding of itself. All this in order to get to the
subliminal circumstances which can motivate people to tangibly,
finally, oppose the order of things that we encounter in such a way as
they can be transformed. I think the key to the whole of America lies
right here – in its refusal to understand itself is the key to it's
refusal ultimately to change itself. And change is that which we most
desperately need." The
program begins with a brief update on very recent news (September 2012)
on
Churchill's losing fight to return to his teaching job as professor of
ethnic studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder. John Trudell

1948 Said and his family were forced to leave Palestine for Cairo when
the
newly founded state of Israel took their ancestral home. Later Said
came to the
US, studied at Princeton and Harvard and went on to teach at Yale and
Columbia.
He was not only a renowned academic but also an eloquent spokesperson
for
Palestinian rights and sovereignty.
Said begins with comments on
the Bush administration and the war on Iraq and continues with a report
on Gaza, still under military occupation. He also refers to the first
and second Intifada, the beginning of the building of the Separation
Wall; and the divestment and boycott campaign in the US. All events are
important historic dates and eerily contemporary. Said ends with a very
personal description of the healing collaboration between him and the
Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim. The youth orchestra that they
founded together in 1999 still forms in 2012. Said
was recorded at UC Berkeley in February of 2003 – his last public
address
before his death seven months later. He leaves behind a treasure of
writings including his most influential book,
Orientalism (1978), an examination of the way the West perceives the
Islamic
world; as well as books inspired by his passionate advocacy of the
Palestinian
cause, including The Question of Palestine, (1979), Covering Islam
(1981), After
the Last Sky (1986), Blaming the Victims (1988), and Culture and
Imperialism
(1993). Miko Peled:
THE GENERAL'S SON In the second half of his talk Miko Peled talks about the moment in his life where everything changed. His 13 year old niece Smadar was among those killed in Jerusalem by two Palestinian suicide bombers. Miko Peled learned from his sister Nurit. She surprised the world press by blaming not the Palestinians but the Israeli government for the death of her daughter. She said the brutal occupation of Palestine had led to a measure of despair that caused the young suicide bombers to take their own lives, along with that of her daughter. Peled also explains why the two state solution is no longer possible and calls for one secular democratic state in which Palestinians and Israelis live side by side. Miko Peled's book: The General's Son, was published in 2012.
The poet
Alice Walker wrote the foreword and said that this book is the most
hopeful on the topic of Israel/Palestine. Peled was recorded by Jeffrey
Blankfort in Berkeley, CA, on September 19, 2012. He spoke at a benefit
for clean water for children in Gaza, organized by the Middle East
Children's Alliance. Prof. Don Huber Don Huber is Professor Emeritus of Plant Pathology. He taught, researched and published at Purdue University for thirty-five years on plant physiology, microbiology, pathology and soil-borne disease control. Huber came out of retirement to speak out on the dangers of glyphosate and genetically modified plants. Monsanto already launched a campaign to discredit him in spite
of his impeccable credentials that even include his work, from 1963 to
1971, at the U.S. Army Edgewood Proving Ground and Ft. Detrick
Biological Laboratories in Maryland. There he did research on chemical
and biological warfare, qualifying him well for his current work on
GMOs. For a broadcast quality mp3 version of Part TWO click HERE Code A374CD To order a 58 minute CD click here $10.00 Code A374DVD To order a one hour FILM on DVD click here $14.00 Pamm Larry and THE

Vandana Shiva explains how biotechnology creates super weeds,
poisons beneficial insects and soil microbes and only brings high
yields when fertilizers, pesticides and abundant water are applied. She
reports on Monsanto's intrusion into the Indian market by burning
heirloom seeds, and locking farmers and seed vendors into exclusive
agreements. Monsanto is using the patent rights they received via
former Monsanto lawyer Clarence Thomas on the US Supreme Court to
collect royalty payments and make it illegal to save and exchange
seeds. She calls for the international abolition of GMOs and the
removal of patents since seeds are a gift from nature to be shared
freely. Vandana Shiva, trained in quantum physics, became a seed saver and ecologist in 1982. She and her organization Navdanya <http://www.navdanya.org/> have done a huge part of the work limiting the spread of GMOs into India. For her the attempts to impose GMOs on India is a war on life and the most recent wave of colonialism. She and the members of Navdanya learned from Gandhi's campaigns against the British - and as Gandhi chose the spinning wheel and salt, they chose the seed as the vessel of life and dedicated themselves to its protection. Shiva’s books include Biopiracy, Stolen Harvest, Monocultures of the Mind, and Water Wars. Her many awards include the Right Livelihood Award, also known as the "Alternative Nobel Peace Prize." She spoke on September 15, 2011, at the Heirloom Seed Expo organized by Baker Creek Seeds along with many independent seed companies, farmers and schools. For a broadcast quality mp3 version of Part ONE click HERE For a broadcast quality mp3 version of Part TWO click HERE Code A363CD To order a 58 minute CD click here $10.00 Code A363DVD To order a one hour FILM on DVD click here $14.00 Scientific Freedom

the
Age of Biotechnology Arpad Pusztai was an advocate of genetic engineering until his research with rats showed serious damage to their immune system and organ growth when they were fed with genetically engineered potatoes. He was fired from his job as Principal Scientific Officer at the Rowett Institute in Scotland, a job he had held for 30 years. Tyrone Hayes did research on the effects of Atrazine, the world's most widely used agricultural chemical as part of a study of breast and prostate cancer. He found damage to tissue and organs of amphibians including sex changes caused by fluctuating levels of estrogen and testosterone. His research was suppressed, and the industry financed research to discredit his work. John Losey discovered that Monarch butterfly caterpillars can die when they eat pollen from engineered corn plants. The industry waged an unsuccessful campaign to suppress his report. Ignacio Chapela discovered that
engineered corn has already invaded the cradle of corn in Oaxaca,
Mexico. A campaign was begun to discredit him and he was
denied tenure in spite of the full support of his colleagues. Two years
after this event the University of California, Berkeley, reversed its
2003 rejection of tenure and hired Chapela as regular member of the
faculty. JUST RECORDED! NEW on August 19, 2012. Arne Gunderson from Fairewinds

Licensing a nuclear power plant is, in my view, licensing random
premeditated murder. First of all, when you license a plant, you know
what you are doing --- so it’s premeditated. Second, the evidence on
radiation-producing cancer is beyond doubt. I’ve worked fifteen years
on it, and so have many others. It is not a question anymore:
Radiation produces cancer, and the evidence is good all the way down to
the lowest doses. The only way you could license nuclear power plants
and not have murder is if you could guarantee perfect containment. But
they admit that they are not going to contain it perfectly." Gofman is the 1992 recipient of the Right Livelihood Award for

28 second Preview/Promo Part ONE Parenti is one of the nation’s leading
progressive political analysts. After receiving his Ph.D. in political
science from Yale Parenti has taught at colleges and universities, in
the United States and abroad. He wrote 23 books, among them: Democracy
for the Few, Superpatriotism, History as Mystery, Against Empire and
God and His Demons. He risked and ended his promising academic career
when he openly opposed the war on Vietnam. Parenti has written about empire,
history, the media, theology, and socialism in his decades as an
activist and teacher. However one topic has intrigued him more than
others. He once wrote that "Imperialism has been the most powerful
force in world history over the last five centuries, carving up whole
continents, oppressing indigenous peoples and obliterating entire
civilizations. Yet, it is seldom accorded any serious attention by our
academics, media, and political leaders." FEMINIST THEOLOGY
AND WOMEN IN THE MUSLIM WORLD Recorded on April 1, 1993, at UC Berkeley, this is a two part
program that begins with an moving account of her personal journey and
ends with a painstakingly researched account of the
story of Adam and Eve common to Islam, Christianity and Judaism. This
myth has been used to declare women secondary, subservient to men, and
sinful. As it turns out this is not the original story.

As of February 2012 this suit hangs in the balance. Will the District Court Judge follow Monsanto's demand and declare the issue without merit, or will the suit go forward with consequences for the right to pure food and the survival of organic food production in the US. Follow the case through these web sites. BAD NEWS (February 27, 2012)
In this program Fred Gray tells his story. He grew up in Montgomery, Alabama, and had to leave the state to finish his education because blacks could not then attend Alabama law schools. He returned to his hometown in 1954 and became one of two black lawyers in the city. His first case was that of the 15 year old Claudette Colvin. Nine months before Rosa Parks refused to relinquish her seat on the Montgomery bus, Claudette did the same. Fred Gray won scores of civil rights cases in education, voting rights, transportation, and health. He represented the Freedom Riders, the Selma-to-Montgomery marchers, and the victims of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. Recorded at the Republican Roundtable in San Francisco, July
2009. It was a Republican, Peter Buxtun, who blew the whistle on
the Tuskegee study. Poor black sharecroppers were led to believe they
were being treated, while in reality the study recorded the progression
of untreated Syphilis. Buxtun is now the events coordinator for the
Republican Roundtable, TUC Radio was there by invitation.
Michael Parenti Grossman describes how corporations usurped many of the rights
that are
properly due to human beings and have become the dominant institutions
or our time – and how that dominance needs to be challenged in the
constitutional arena. He proposes how to bring about the changes in
self-governance, be it
energy, agriculture, transportation, peace or environmental protection
by directly challenging the law. Christopher
Hitchens In Part TWO Hitchens discusses whether Nixon and Kissinger
stole the elections of 1968, offers additional information on
Kissinger's role in Israel, Palestine, and Cyprus, and reviews some of
the instruments of international law that may be used to bring war
criminals to trial. Updated in December 2011. DISMANTLING CORPORATIONS Remembering Richards work and life Richard Grossman said: ".. corporations don’t have rights. Rights are for people. Corporations only have privileges, and only those that we the people bestow on them." In a nutshell that was the essence of his research and teaching for the last 20 years. Richard died of melanoma on November 22nd, 2011, at a hospital in New York City, where he was born sixty-eight years earlier. Ralph Nader called him the “preeminent historian of corporations” and a new, inspiring reading of history was his special gift. Richard said that the American revolution was fought less against the crown but against the crown corporations. And he believed that it's time to remember that fight and assert sovereignty of the people over the corporate state and ask: Why should the many be governed by the few?" In the last 15 years he had been an important member of POCLAD, the Project on Corporations, Law and Democracy and CELDF, the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund. His lasting legacy are the Democracy Schools that continue to be taught across the country, and a pamphlet: Taking Care of Business describes the process of de-chartering corporations. <http://www.ratical.org/corporations/TCoB.html> Two important projects that Richard Grossman initiated in the last months of his life do not receive enough notice in the obituaries about his work: Upstate New York, where he lived in a small town, is in the cross hairs of natural gas exploration and hydrofracking. Richard Grossman became active in the Sovereign People's Action Network (SPAN). He presented, at the August 2011 Green Fest in New York City, the draft of a law to not just regulate or limit the practice but to formally criminalize the procedure in an amendment to the penal code. <http://corporatecrimereporter.com/documents/fracking.pdf> The second legacy of Richard Grossman's work that he formalized as draft just 4 weeks before he died is An Act To Criminalize Chartered, Incorporated Business Entities as a class.<GrossmanActToCriminalize.html> Several Obituaries refer to that Act by name without offering a link to the text. It seems as if those who want to remember Richard shy away from presenting his most radical proposal. But Richard himself wanted it to be seen. It is his contribution to the Occupy movement. This is the first and second in a two hour tribute to this passionate and erudite man, beginning with this recording of a 1995 presentation to a planning meeting with the members of the International Forum on Globalization. 30 second PROMO for Part ONE For a broadcast quality mp3 version of Part ONE click HERE For a broadcast quality mp3 version of Part TWO click HERE Code GT6 To order a one hour CD click here: $10.00 Alex

Politics Today is Money Laundering Part TWO is a reading of Moyers' concise and revealing mini
history of the corporate takeover of America's democracy, beginning
with the infamous secret 1971 memo by Lewis Powell to his friends at
the U. S. Chamber of Commerce. Powell soon became Justice of the United
States Supreme Court. Moyers sums it up: "We look back on it now as a
call to arms for class war waged from the top down... Within two years
the board of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce formed a task force of 40
business executives. Their assignment was to defend the free enterprise
system and push the corporate agenda. In 1971, only 175 firms had
registered lobbyists in the capital; by 1982, nearly twenty-five
hundred did. Corporate PACs increased from under 300 in 1976 to over
twelve hundred by the middle of the l980s. Powell had set in motion a
revolt of the rich." (Moyers omitted this very important section due to
time constraints.) Bill Moyers, elder, intellectual, journalist and public
broadcaster for four decades has known politics more intimately than
most of his media colleagues. He was an organizing founder and deputy
director of the Peace Corps, Special Assistant and then Press Secretary
to President Lyndon Johnson and played a key role in organizing and
supervising the 1964 Great Society legislative task forces. Natural Process

Our Future Reclaiming our Future was the motto of the 10 year anniversary of 9/11 held in 2011 at San Francisco's Herbst Theater. The event signaled a break through on 9/11 in two important areas. A trailer for an upcoming movie by Engineers and Architects for 9/11 Truth about the destruction of World Trade Center Building #7 has already gone viral on the internet. Narrated by Ed Asner, it shows the latest research that rebuts the government explanation that office furniture fire caused the free fall collapse of the 47 story building, that was not hit by an airplane. Of all the 9/11 issues the case of building #7 is the most compelling to-date to initiate a new investigation. Architects and engineers are joined by 9/11 family members and first responders who are joining that demand. Kevin Danaher supports the movie and gives a passionate appeal for reclaiming our future, the second theme of the event. Anodea Judith is founder and director of Sacred Centers. Her
book, Waking the Global Heart: Humanity's Rite of Passage from the Love
of Power to the Power of Love, was the winner of the 2007 Nautilus Book
Award for Social Change. She is a groundbreaking thinker, writer, and
spiritual teacher. Her passion for the realization of untapped human
potential matches her concern for humanity’s impending crises — her
fervent wish is that we “wake up in time.” She holds Masters and
Doctoral degrees in Psychology and Human Health, is a registered yoga
teacher, with lifelong studies of healing, mythology, history,
sociology, systems theory, and mystic spirituality.

PLUTONIUM FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS? The disaster at Fukushima makes it apparent how little is known about the operation of a nuclear power plant. For example the so-called "spent" fuel in the cooling pools on the rooftops is many times more dangerous than the fresh, non irradiated fuel. The biggest danger from the Fukuchima nuclear accident comes from unit 3 that was stocked in September 2010 with MOX, a new mixed oxide reactor fuel that contains plutonium - not as a fission byproduct - but from the outset inside the fuel rods. MOX fuel is many times more lethal than uranium fuel. This is conversation between Mary Olson from NIRS, the Nuclear Information and Resource Service, and Jacqui Cabasso from the Western States Legal Foundation. It is a rare historic document of the origins of a campaign against MOX plutonium fuel for nuclear power, an analysis of the terrible pact of mutual support between utilities, weapons makers and bought off congress people. President Obama says, after Fukushima, that nuclear power will remain quote "part of the overall energy plan". Republicans - in their merciless budget cuts leave as yet a program untouched that funds the ongoing construction of a MOX fuel generating plant at Savannah River in South Carolina. Michael Parenti is among our leading
progressive political analysts. He
received his Ph.D. in political
science from Yale University in 1962 and has taught at colleges in the
US and abroad. The focus of his lectures is American democracy, US
foreign policy, and the invented reality of the media. Part two/six Part
three/six Part
four/six Part
five/six PSYCHO-HISTORY Vladimir Ilyich Lenin's opposition to the absolute monarch of
Russia, the Tsar, psycho historians say, came out of Lenin's unresolved
issues with parental authority. When Herbert Hoover, after
administering food aid for Belgium and Central Europe denied it to the
hungry at home during the depression, psycho historians characterized
him as an active-negative president due to his very bad childhood.
Parenti writes that in spite of his bad childhood Hoover had become a
multi-millionaire and stood firmly with his fellow millionaires. He
opposed jobless benefits and public assistance as creeping socialism
while giving tax breaks to corporation. Parenti present a very
different and intriguing explanation for the actions of Lenin and
Hoover. Part six/six When Parenti's book History as Mystery was published by City
Lights in San Francisco Daniel Ellsberg, who made history by disclosing
the Pentagon papers and the real causes of the war on Vietnam, wrote:
Michael Parenti unveils the falsified history, from the early Christian
church to the present, a fascinating, darkly revelatory tale. History
as Mystery contains many more intriguing chapters from the Inquisition
and Joan of Arc to the way present day text books distort labor history.
Summary: TWO:
During 8 years of Pres. Bush the
wealthiest 400 families saw their income double while tax rates dropped
almost in half. They now earn on average $345 million a year and pay an
effective tax rate of 16.6% - that is the lowest tax rate ever.
Collectively the 400 richest Americans have accumulated $1.27 trillion
in wealth. THREE:
While taxpayers bailed out Wall Street banks because they were too big
to fail, 3 out of 4 financial institutions that were bailed out are now
larger than before. Wells Fargo is 43% bigger, JP Morgan Chase 51%
bigger, and Bank of America is 138% bigger. If we are serious about
preventing a future collapse worse than the current one we have to
break these banks up, says Sanders. FOUR:
After devoting time to the $13.7 trillion national debt and our deficit which is $1.4 trillion,
Sanders turns to our trade deficit. He says: In 2008 the trade deficit
was nearly 700 billion - last year our deficit with China alone was
almost 227 billion - we urgently need trade reform. Program
Notes: Vermont's independent Senator Bernie Sanders' 8 1/2 hour filibuster speech in protest of the Bill that - among other gifts - extended tax breaks to the richest Americans, crashed the Senate servers. Bars and Pizza parlors carried his speech live. He began speaking on the morning of Friday, December 10 and did not eat or sit down until 7 pm. He gave one of those speeches many wished Pres. Obama was capable of giving. Even though - or really because the bill
did
pass both houses a few days later - Sanders' words must be remembered.
This bill, ironically called: Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance
Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 is an attack on social
security and a blueprint for even larger gifts and tax relief to
corporation and the richest of the rich. Michael Parenti:
Federal law, the Telecommunications Act of 1996, denies local
communities the right to challenge cell tower sitings on health and
environmental grounds. There is no government agency that studies the
impact of an ever increasing electronic smog emitted by cell towers,
cell phones, wifi's, smart meters and new wireless electronic devices
unheard of only last year. Most of us are now exposed to one or more of
these emitter 24/7, even those who do not own or operate any of of them. Part ONE Part TWO Dr. Martin Blank is Associate Professor in the Department of
Physiology and Cellular Biophysics at Columbia University. He holds a
PhD from Columbia in Physical Chemistry and a PhD from Cambridge,
England, in Colloid Science.

Northern California. He was recorded on December 3, 2010, in yet
another small town on the ocean in Mendocino County on one his very
rare public appearances. He was invited by Parents for Peace, Mendocino. Chalmers Johnson died on November 20, 2010. Chalmers Johnson on NEMESIS: Chalmers Johnson is the acclaimed author
of Blowback
and The Sorrows of Empire.
He is a former analyst for the CIA
and professor emeritus of the University of California San Diego. He

They encounter two problems: The fossil fuel industry was exempted from the clean air and safe drinking water act under the Bush administration, and corporations do not need to disclose what chemicals they use. Test results from drinking water in people's homes and from spills and sediment in evaporation ponds at drill sites have now identified 247 out of over 300 chemicals and they include carcinogens, mutagens, and neurotoxins. Josh Fox, for his movie GASLAND, reports from 24 states on the impacts of chemical hydraulic fracturing. He uncovered water that can be lit on fire right out of the tap, talks to chronically ill residents of drilling areas from many different locations in the US, describes pools of toxic waste that kill cattle and vegetation, and well blowouts and gas explosions. Natural Gas, in the eyes of oil service corporations such as Halliburton, and the stock market, is in it's tenth year of an unprecedented boom. The US, they say, is the Saudi Arabia of natural gas with 450,000 gas wells already operating in over 32 states and aggressively expanding. This program tries to capture some of the imagination and determination of the local people in this David and Goliath confrontation. Part ONE: Josh Fox from his trailer for the movie GASLAND and

Arrindell and Joe Levine from Damascus Citizens, interviewed by Fred
Pecora, producer at WJFF. <http://www.damascuscitizens.org/>
<http://www.gaslandthemovie.com/> Michael Ruppert Richard Heinberg, author of The Party is Over said about Ruppert's most recent book: Confronting Collapse: "Ruppert has an unblemished track record for saying things that are incendiary, outrageous, shocking - and true. Our new president needs desperately to hear the uncomfortable message of this book about energy and the economy, and so do the rest of us." In the first part of the radio version of Collapse I focus on
Ruppert's line of arguments around Peak Oil. There are several
respected researchers who also argue that we have reached Peak, the
halfway point between the discovery and the end of oil where oil
companies take greater and greater risks to tap the last remaining oil
fields - as the disastrous British Petroleum spill in the Gulf of
Mexico shows. In part two Ruppert addresses the collapse of the fuel
based agriculture and of the financial system.
Parenti is one of the nation’s leading progressive political
analysts.
He is a prolific author and an engaging speaker. Parenti grew up in a
conservative, catholic, working class Italian community in New York
city. After receiving his Ph.D. in political science from Yale he has
taught at colleges and universities, in the United States and abroad.
He risked and ended his academic career when he openly opposed the war
on Vietnam. He serves on the board of judges for Project Censored and
is the author
of 22 books, among them: Democracy for the Few, Contrary Notions,
Superpatriotism, History as Mystery, and Dirty Truths. Frances Moore
Lappé Frances Moore Lappé is the author of 18 books including
the
three-million copy Diet for a Small Planet. Diet for a Small Planet was
the first book to expose the enormous waste built into U.S. grain-fed
meat production. For Frances that was a powerful symbol of a global
food system that is creating hunger out of plenty. Eating a
planet-centered diet, she argued, means choosing what is best for the
earth and our bodies—a daily action that reminds us of our power to
create a saner world. Peter Dale Scott on Thomas Merton The spiritual and literary connections that Scott lays out in
this talk
are interwoven with not just Merton's ideas on mutual respect, inner
and outer peace, liberation theology, and Gandhian nonviolence - but
with the vision for a cultural societal as well as a personal change
that can bring about a peaceful world. Lawrence
Ferlinghetti The program opens with the Ferlinghetti poem: Wild Dreams of a
New Beginning, written in 1974, about the mile high tidal wave that
runs over Los Angeles which sinks like the Titanic, all lights lit;
crosses the country to sweep Manhattan Island clean in 16 seconds. The
washed land then awakes again to wilderness, and the Indians reclaim
their canoes. Silvia Ribeiro While most climate scientist left the Copenhagen Summit
feeling gloomy
about the lack of action to halt climate change, a small group felt
emboldened. They are the geo-engineers who are proposing large scale
global projects to reduce solar radiation by spreading sulphate
aerosols into the atmosphere, placing sunshades into space or by
whitening the clouds. They also want to force the oceans into absorbing
more of the excess CO2 through "fertilization" by spreading urea, iron
or phosphorous. And they work on carbon sequestration and weather
modification. What seemed until recently a mad science fiction project
is now gaining acceptance by corporations, politicians, the US
Department of Energy, climate change deniers and funders. Iain Boal The impact of today's technologies on social relations and the
planet
itself is becoming an intriguing field of inquiry. However so far the
discussion of nuclear power, biotechnology, deforestation, automobiles
or computers is pretty much dominated by industry and government who
want us to take all this for granted. A vibrant international movement to end the blockade is making
ongoing
attempts to enter through Egypt and by sea to bring supplies into Gaza.
Ali Abunimah was part of the Gaza Freedom March in December 2009. The
suffering of the Palestinians in Gaza has strengthened the international Boycott,
Divestment and Sanctions movement. The movement has also united
Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza with those dispersed through the
world and with the few still living in Israel as second class citizens.
Abunimah, along with author Naomi Klein are prominent supporters of
that boycott Israel movement. Ali Abunimah is a Palestinian American activist and author. He is often heard on Democracy Now as co-founder of the Electronic Intifada, an online publication about the Israel Palestine conflict. Born in Washington, DC, he spent his early years in England and Belgium before returning to attend Princeton University. His mother was expelled from from Lifta, now controlled by Israel, his father is from the West Bank. Recorded by Jeff Blankfort on 2010-02-28 at an event of the
Middle East Children's Alliance, MECA.
In a yearlong research process she updated the information on
dangerous
global trends such as ozone depletion, global warming, toxic pollution,
food contamination, and deforestation - and, as always, she gives a
prescription for a cure and cause for hope. Helen Caldicott rallies
readers to action with the contention that our fight for the planet
will draw its strength from love for the Earth itself. Helen Caldicott The anti-nuclear campaigner Dr. Helen Caldicott spoke in
Berkeley at a
June 2009 meeting of SuperBOLD, an organization dedicated to enforcing
the Nuclear Free ordinance. They are trying to prevent the Berkeley
Public library from hiring the 3M corporation to maintain the Radio
Frequency checkpoint system there. 3M refuses to sign a contract that
they will not do “work for nuclear weapons.”
David Korten In this speech, given in March 2009 at the NW regional conference of Veterans for Peace, he analyzes two major flaws of the current economic system and points to ways to replace them. One is the monetary system, the other the concept of ever increasing growth, measured as GDP. Thanks to Ed Mays of Pirate TV for the recording. NGO
based in Europe. A participant in the
Durban Group's critique of carbon trading she eloquently describes how
the system favors large
corporations and will prevent a transition to renewable energy
production. Dr. Arjun Makhijani argues against the resurgence of
nuclear power. He holds a Ph.D. in engineering, specializing in nuclear
fusion, from U.C. Berkeley. He is the principal author of the first
study ever done (and
completed in 1971) on the energy conservation potential in the U.S.
economy. UPDATED: In 2008, one year
after he was recorded, Greenland had the greatest ice losses ever,
three times the amount that Ithluk had observed. That may mean that
Greenland has reached the tipping point. Jason Box, associate professor
of geography at Ohio State’s Byrd Polar Research Center, said after the
2008 numbers were compiled QUOTE “We now know that the climate doesn't
have to warm any more for Greenland to continue losing ice,” Box said.
“It has probably passed the point where it could maintain the mass of
ice that we remember." That loss of ice translates into global sea
level rises of potentially up to 6 feet by 2100. UPDATED:
David Ray Griffin Then, in November 2008, the federal technology agency NIST
released the
Final WTC 7 Investigation Report. In their executive summary they say
that heating of floor beams and girders caused one of 82 support column
to fail, initiating a fire-induced progressive collapse that led to the
failure of the 81 others and brought the building down.
Denied a license under the old Apartheid regime, Bush Radio
went on the air illegally in 1993. Two broadcasters were arrested and
the equipment confiscated. After the historic elections of 1994 the
first broadcast licenses issued by the Mandela government were
specifically for community broadcasters. In June of 1995 Bush Radio
received its license to broadcast. Bush Radio played a huge role in
defining the laws and practice of community radio in South Africa. Over
the last eight years they trained approximately 500 people to operate a
radio station. Almost every one of the nearly 90 stations in existence
in South Africa today employs at least one person trained at Bush Radio.

just made me aware of an anti-nuclear piece that Lawrence Ferlinghetti
wrote in 1958. I asked Ferlinghetti, who is now 90 years young, to read
it again, 51 years
later. Ferlinghetti had seen Nagasaki a few
weeks after the atom bomb destroyed it. That experience changed his
life. "The Tentative Description of a Dinner to Promote the Impeachment
of President Eisenhower" is less about Eisenhower than about all
Presidents
since then who failed to end the nuclear age. Ferlinghetti reads about
the "strange rain that would never stop .. and
perverted pollen blown on sunless seas - eaten by irradiated fish who
spawned up cloudleaf streams and fell upon our dinner plates."
THE END OF MONEY AND THE FUTURE OF CIVILIZATION Tom Greco demystifies money and banking and explains the destructive power of the current financial system. He challenges us to recognize that our dreams of a sane, just and ecologically sound future can become reality only if we change the way in which money is created and used. Tom Greco was recorded at the beginning of his lecture tour for his most recent book: THE END OF MONEY AND THE FUTURE OF CIVILIZATION. A former engineer and college professor, Greco has written on monetary and financial innovation for over 30 years. Maria,
8/17/2012 Thank you for all the work you do to bring life changing information to all of us. We are out here working for our own cause, doing our own thing, sometimes feeling lonely, distraught, or overwhelmed, but to turn on KOPN, listener supported radio, on Thursday afternoons and hear your voice and the wonderful programs you bring into my home, my work, and my life, makes me feel more connected and supported. Sometimes I am saddened by what I hear or feel overwhelmed at a new idea or challenge, but always I am grateful and uplifted that so many people, like yourself, are working for their own cause and making the world better.

listening to your productions for nearly a decade. I discovered
Internet radio right around 2001 and it quickly became my primary
window on the world. It started with reliance on rfpi.org on shortwave
in the late 1990s as a way to stay sane in Alaska. I think I have
everything you have released since that time on one or another hard
drive. I still go back to the 2 part reading of Alex Carey's work,
the talks
by Bill Pepper, and the lecture by Richard Grossman. On Monday night I visited your website for the first time,
and
ended up listening to Michael Parenti for about 4 hours. I got to

5/11/2008 5/12/2008 5/27/08 In these crazy times I /know/ I am more usefully conscious-- thanks to you. I wish I could do as much for you as you have done for me. I really enjoy your program-- and never miss it! Robert L, San Francisco 6/19/08 Maria, thank you so much for allowing mp3 downloads. Wonderful and useful work you're doing! It's interesting that it was the attempted corporate takeover of Pacifica Radio that helped spawn the creation of independent work such as your's along with Amy Goodman's here on the east coast. Thanks so much again. Good luck with your new PV system, it's the future. Chris & Harriet 7/18/08 Hi Maria, I will send more money in the future. I have been meaning to donate but have put it off. The contrast of downloads to donations struck me and pushed me to act. I too have enjoyed your free downloads and am enormously grateful to you for your work. I will order CDs to share with others in the future. When I listen To TUC, it's usually online while I work. I found TUC on KZYX after moving here from Florida. KZYX has also introduced me to Democracy Now, Alternative Radio, the voices of Zinn, Chomsky, Parenti and so much more. I am amazed by this new wealth of information. Gregory H., Willits, CA 10/12/08 A.J. in New York City sent this e-mail to his friend - and to me: http://www.brightcove.tv/title.jsp?title= 1521609105&channel=992396355 If you don't know this woman, this film is a really good introduction. i go to her site pretty regularly, download some shows she's done, occasionally donate some dough, maybe write an email (and always get a reply). If you want Vivid, she's got it, and i'm very pleased to have found her a few years ago. And come to think of it, I think Maria is Frida -- and Rosa L. -- reborn in San Francisco. Or maybe that's not fair; i think i'm just being, you know, hip. i kind of like somebody's description of Frida that says Frida had no politics -- that she was simply attracted to the fire of the people who did. and that's not Maria at all. yes, she gets off on other folks and their fire, but she's got plenty of her own. Nuclear waste and routine releases from nuclear reactors
IS NUCLEAR POWER COMING BACK?
When the anti nuclear campaigner Dr. Helen Caldicott called on leading
scientists and policy makers to debunk the claims that nuclear power
plants needed to be built to halt climate change, she was aiming at the
Bush administration. It now appears that plans to bring back nuclear
power are bipartisan and not restricted to the US either. So it is time
to revisit the arguments and remember the passionate campaigns of the
60s and 70s that stopped the building of new nuclear power plants in
the US and even raised hopes for the abolition of nuclear weapons.
The first speaker, Rep. Ed Markey, Mass, said that the 1979 accident
at
Three Mile Island was the beginning of the end of nuclear power in the
US. Within a year Markey, Helen Caldicott and others introduced the
nuclear freeze resolution into the House of Representatives. Sen.
Kennedy introduced it into the Senate. They made the linkage between
nuclear weapons, nuclear power and nuclear proliferation, a linkage
that still exists today.
Proponents of nuclear power claim that nuclear plants are emission
free. That is not true. All nuclear power plants release radioactive
substances into air and water during their day to day operations. Kay
Drey is a member of the board of directors of Beyond Nuclear. She
has worked for 30 years to protect the public, workers and the
environment from the hazards of nuclear power and radioactive waste. In
1996 she chaired a statewide campaign in Missouri, her home state, that
led to the cancellation of a nuclear reactor then under construction.
She also led the successful campaign against the construction of a
permanent disposal bunker at the St. Louis Airport for uranium and
thorium wastes generated during the production of atomic weapons in the
1940s and ‘50s.
Kay Drey and Ed Markey spoke at a two day conference in November 2005
called by the internationally known anti nuclear campaigner Helen
Caldicott to deter the Bush administration from funding new nuclear
power plants. I am bringing back the highlight of that November 2005
conference since nuclear power projects are still part of the energy
mix.

IS NUCLEAR POWER COMING BACK?
A four-part mini-series based on a
briefing, on November 7 and 8, 2005, organized by Dr. Helen Caldicott.
IN MEMORIAM
Harold Pinter died in London on
December 24, 2008. This is a re-mastered, carefully edited version of
the original 46 minute speech.
Pinter was too ill to travel to Stockholm to accept the Nobel Prize.
This is a 2005 studio recording of a powerful voice, struggling to be
heard.
The video was played at the ceremony and distributed world-wide via the
internet and other independent media.
Not even the BBC dared play it during daytime.
Harold Pinter
ART, TRUTH & POLITICS
When Harold Pinter won the 2005 Nobel Prize in Literature, he used his
acceptance speech on December 7 to launch a blistering attack on George
Bush and
the British government, and a challenge to the conscience of people to
not stand by in the face of Bush's crimes.
Harold Pinter was born in October 1930 in East London. He was a
playwright, director, actor, poet and political activist. He has
written twenty-nine plays including The Birthday Party, The Caretaker,
The Homecoming, and Betrayal, and twenty-one screenplays including The
French Lieutenant's Woman and The Handmaid's Tale, a chilling expose of
what life would be like for women under a Christian fascist regime in
America.
Pinter's interest in politics was a very public one. His biographer
Michael Billington said: "Pinter remains, to his credit, a permanent
public nuisance, a questioner of accepted truths, both in life and
art." Pinter was an outspoken endorser of the call The World Can't
Wait,
Drive Out the Bush Regime.

HELEN CALDICOTT
Nuclear Power is not the Answer
Grand Round lecture by the Australian
pediatrician, anti nuclear
campaigner, and Nobel Prize nominee Dr. Helen Caldicott at Oakland
Children's Hospital, CA. This is a personal and passionate appeal to
doctors to inform the public and politicians about the proven effects
of radiation that the medical profession has studied and treated for so
long.
Helen Caldicott covers radiation dangers from each stage of the nuclear
fuel chain, from uranium mining, depleted uranium, to the fissioning of
the fuel rods inside the nuclear reactor. She talks about Alpha and
Gamma rays, isotopes, half lives and which parts of the human body are
affected by various forms of radiation.
This is a response to the international effort to bring back nuclear
power under the guise of holding off climate change. Helen Caldicott
explains that nuclear power is not emission free, it is dangerous in
all it's phases, and expensive. Unlike renewable wind and solar energy
nuclear power will not come on line fast enough to make a difference, a
difference that is needed now, not in 15 years.
For over 35 years Helen Caldicott has led the international efforts to
educate the public about the dangers of nuclear power and weapons and
has been named one of the most influential women of the 20th century by
the Smithsonian Institute. She has written numerous books, among them
Nuclear Power is not the Answer (2006)and War in Heaven: The Arms Race
in Outer Space (2007) Helen Caldicott has begun producing a free,
weekly one hour radio program entitled: If You Love This Planet. Her
site is <http://www.ifyoulovethisplanet.org>
In September 2008 Helen Caldicott did a phone interview with her
friend and colleague, Dr. Kate Hudson, chair of the CND, the Campaign
for Nuclear Disarmament. The CND,
active since 1958, is making a
renewed and very well received effort to remove nuclear weapons from
Britain and to stop the recent plans to build new nuclear power plants.
Kate Hudson is a long time peace activist and the chair of the Campaign
for Nuclear Disarmament in England. She is also Head of Social and
Policy Studies at London South Bank University and edits the journal
Contemporary Politics. She has written several books including:

ROBERT FISK
The Age of the Warrior
Fisk is Britain’s most celebrated foreign correspondent and has been
named International Journalist of the Year seven times. He is currently
the Middle East correspondent for The Independent of London and has
covered eleven major wars in over three decades. He lives in Beirut and
was one of only two journalists who had the courage to remain there
through the duration of the Lebanese civil war. I filmed him at his
most recent, rare, visit to the US as he spoke in front of a capacity
audience in Berkeley, CA. He was greeted with a standing ovation.
Anybody writing on current events or making policy decisions for the
Middle East needs to take Fisk's analysis into account. Fisk argues for
an immediate troop withdrawal, both from Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Age of the Warrior, his most recent book, is a collection of essays
from his paper, The Independent. Robert Fisk's previous books include
Pity the Nation and The Great War for Civilization. He spoke at a
benefit for the Middle East Children’s Alliance in Berkeley, CA, on
September 25, 2008. Fisk is a captivating speaker who supports his
arguments with reports from war zones where few dare to tread and a
wealth of historic examples.

MICHAEL PARENTI
Contrary Notions
City Light books in San Francisco's North Beach was filled to capacity
for the book party of Michael Parenti's most recent work: Contrary
Notions. This is a rich selection from the writings of a life time on
history, empire, wealth, class power, ideology and much more. Parenti
goes where few political analysts dare to go and - with acerbic wit
- makes transparent how he arrives at his conclusions. This
excerpt of his 45 minute talk addresses taboo subjects such as the
murder of the town of New Orleans and 9/11.

This August
28, 2008 analysis of the media is Parenti's most up-to-date
contribution. He gave the keynote speech for the Modern Media
Censorship lectures by Project Censored. Each year Project Censored <http://www.projectcensored.org/>
gives awards
for the most censored news stories of the year. Parenti lists important
criteria by which to judge media bias, ranging from ownership to
labeling, false objectivity and sensationalism, omission, outright lies
and the denial of causality with the famous theory of "stuff happens".
Michael Parenti has written and lectured on the mainstream media for
decades. His key book on the topic is "Inventing Reality - The politics

CAPITALISM'S APOCALYPSE
Why the rich can't save anybody - not even themselves
Parenti predicted the financial crisis and said that giant corporate
capitalism - by it's very nature - is an apocalyptic system. When
unregulated the built in elements of ever increased growth may well
bring the whole system down. And he described the growing national debt
not as a tragic mistake but as a means to shift ever more money from
the tax payers to the financial institutions in the form of interest
payments. This speech is an analysis of the many structural flaws of a
capitalist system that puts it on a permanent collision course with
democracy.

Alexander Cockburn
On the financial crisis and the 2008 elections
I recorded the political journalist, editor of CounterPunch, long time
observer of the American political scene, writer for the Nation and
author of many books in the Northern California coastal town of Fort
Bragg. Cockburn had come down from Petrolia in Humboldt County to give
a pithy, provocative assessment of the presidential candidates. There
is not enough time to place this speech into radio distribution before
the November 4 deadline - but i want to do my best to get his opinions
on the financial crisis and the candidates McCain and Obama to the
widest possible audience via the internet and this web site. Here are

Michael Parenti: CONSPIRACY &
CLASS POWER
One of Parenti's most influential archival speeches
This is an in-depth analysis of the modern state
and the exercise of power behind the scenes. The speech is also an
important historic document. Given in 1993 it issues a warning of the
use of deception to justify going to war. The speech also explains the
expansion of the deregulated free market that would lead to a financial
crisis as we see it today.
The speech on Conspiracy and Class Power was lost for several years and
only recently discovered in the collection of a listener in
Seattle.
Michael Parenti spoke before an overflow audience in Berkeley, CA.
Michael Parenti is an internationally known author and lecturer. He
received his Ph.D. in political science from Yale in 1962 and is one of
the nation's leading progressive political thinkers. His highly
informative and entertaining books and talks have reached a wide range
of audiences in North America and abroad.
His books include Democracy for the Few, Superpatriotism, The

Bill McKibben on DEEP ECONOMY
A talk and conversation with Michael Pollan
Bill McKibben’s book: ‘The End of Nature’ is
regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change.
Published in 1989, it has been printed in more than 20 languages.
He has since written on localization, alternative energy, and the risks
associated with human genetic engineering. In his most recent book:
‘Deep Economy: The
Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future’ he envisions a transition
to local-scale enterprise.
McKibben and his family live in Vermont. He is a scholar in residence
at Middlebury College where he launched the campaign: stepitup2007,
demanding that global warming pollution be cut 80 percent by 2050.
McKibben spoke in Berkeley in March 2007. The church was
filled to capacity with an enthusiastic crowd. He was joined
on stage by a colleague and fellow author, Michael Pollan, author of
“The Omnivore's Dilemma”, and “Botany of
Desire”.

John Nichols
THE IMPEACHMENT OF BUSH AND CHENEY
This is a repeat of Nichols' popular November
2006 talk, a contribution to the renewed debate on impeachment.
The acclaimed author, Washington correspondent
for the Nation, and media critic John Nichols wrote a book entitled: The
Genius
of
Impeachment.
The
author Studs Terkel said about this book: "Never within my
memory has the case for impeachment of Bush and his equally crooked
confederates been so clearly and fervently offered as John Nichols has
done in this book. They are after all our public SERVANTS who have
rifled our savings, bled our young, and challenged our sanity. And
Nichols has given us the history, the language and the arguments we
will need to do so."
John Nichols had come to San Francisco
just before the November 2006 election to urge the group of friends who
had gathered to meet him that the real political work was to begin on
the day after the election. And that work would be – he suggested - to
bring about the impeachment of Bush and Cheney.
Recorded by Maria Gilardin in San Francisco, November 1, 2006.

threats of attacks on IRAN
Daniel Ellsberg
THE THREAT OF WAR ON IRAN
When Daniel Ellsberg released the Pentagon Papers
in 1971 they revealed the US Government's lies about the war on
Vietnam. 35 years later Ellsberg received the Right Livelihood Award,
the so-called alternative Nobel Price, for “… dedicating his life to
inspiring others to follow his example.”
For the last 6 years Ellsberg has campaigned against the exercise of
executive power by the Bush administration. He calls for action to end
such Presidential violation of the constitution and to prevent an
expansion of the war in the Middle East and
an attack on Iran. He urges government insiders to come up with
the new set of Pentagon papers, to act now and not wait until they
write their memoirs. The American public needs to see the current
attack plans on Iran in order to prevent a terrible expansion of
the war in the Middle East. He voices criticism of the new democratic
congress and their support –
with few exceptions - of the Kyl/Lieberman amendment of
Sept. 2007. This bill designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps
as a terrorist organization. Opponents of the amendment are saying that
it could be used by Bush to attack Iran.
Daniel Ellsberg spoke on December 18, 2007, at the Republican Round
Table in a downtown hotel in San Francisco.

Restoring a Forest
- with fire and love
Dennis Martinez
Church and military records show that in the early 19th century
California's forests were not "wild" but carefully tended. The
catastrophic wildfires of today were extremely rare. Dennis Martinez
talks about Indian forest practice and
restoration. He has worked for 35 years in eco-cultural
restoration specializing in tribal lands and cultural issues.
Contact him at <http://www.ser.org/iprn/founder.asp>
The forest at the Mountain Grove Center For
New Education, near Glendale in SW Oregon was clear-cut in the 1930s
and 40s. It has come back thick, young, and dark. When Indians cared
for the land the old growth incense cedars and chinquapins were spaced
widely, plants thrived on the sun-lit forest floor, and animals found
shelter and food. Dennis Martinez knows about Indian forest practice
and was restoring this land when I interviewed him in 1996.

STOP the Pesticide Spray of the Bay Area
UPDATE:
After this program was recorded the California Department of Food and
Agriculture announced on June 19 that they would suspend the spraying
of urban areas. They still plan to spray forested areas and use ground
spraying of the controversial pesticide. Parenti says:" This is a
tactical retreat to preserve the whole notion of the pesticide war
against any bug and weed that they declared an invasive public enemy.
Nan Wishner from Stop the Spray East Bay
says on July 7: The state has filed court documents indicating an
intent to proceed (with ground spray and forested aereas) without
environmental review. We have asked for written
clarification of what treatments are planned, and we continue
to work to reclassify the moth to stop this unsafe, unnecessary,
and ineffective program.
Parenti weighs in on the Apple Moth eradication
What do Homeland Security and FEMA have to do with the California
Department of Food and Agriculture's plans to spray the San Francisco
Bay Area with pesticides? Is this more dangerous to us and our rights
than to the light brown apple moth? Parenti says that 50 other states
have plans for similar eradication programs - so this is
NOT a local issue.

Microwave Radiation, the shadow side of the wireless revolution
The BIOINITIATIVE REPORT
with: Dr. Magda Havas, Cindy Sage & Dr. David Carpenter
Moved by the mounting evidence of dangerous health effects of
radio-frequency radiation and electromagnetic fields a group of
internationally acclaimed scientists collaborated on the August 2007
Bioinitiative report. They reviewed over 2000 research publications and
raise concerns about the safety of existing public limits that regulate
how much exposure is allowable from power lines, mobile phones, and
other electronic devices.
The report received prominent notice in the European press but was
ignored by the US commercial media. The Environmental Agency of
the European Union contributed to the report with a section on the need
to apply the precautionary principle. The EU agency supports the demand
to come up with new and stricter public exposure standards for
electromagnetic fields.
Contributors to the Bioinitiative report gave a presentation at the San
Francisco Commonwealth Club on March 19, 2008. Among the speakers are:
Dr. Bill Grant, member of the Commonwealth Club’s health and medicine
forum; Dr. Magda Havas, Associate Professor of Environmental and
Resource Studies at Trent University, Canada; Cindy Sage, environmental
consultant and co-editor of the Bioinitiative Report; and Dr. David
Carpenter, Professor of Environmental Health Sciences and Director of
the Institute for Health and the Environment at the School of Public
Health at the University of Albany, NY. The full text of the

CONFRONTING THE GLOBAL TRIPLE CRISIS
False Solutions to Peak Oil and Climate Change
In September of 2007 the International Forum on Globalization held a
Teach in Washington DC on climate change, peak oil and global resource
depletion & extinction. <http://www.ifg.org>
Several Panel meetings addressed the many false solutions to the
climate crisis that may be accelerating the danger rather than
alleviating it. Coal for example is now promoted as a substitute for
oil and promises for the capture of the carbon are made that are not
yet possible with current technologies and may never be available on a
large scale.
Dr. Hermann Ott is head of the Berlin office of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. He is the co-author of the book: The Kyoto Protocol International Climate Policy for the 21st Century. From the Appalachian mountains came Mary Anne Hitt. She lives and works at the center of one of the large unreported ecological tragedies of out time. In surface mines, some the size of New York's Manhattan, whole mountain ranges are blown off to strip mine the coal. Mary Anne Hitt is Executive Director of Appalachian Voices. Go to their web site at <http://www.appvoices.org>and to a sister web site <http://www.Ilovemountains.org>. There you can see aerial photos of the Appalachian mines and photos of the forests, streams and mountains before they were demolished.
Jutta Kill is a climate campaigner and activist for FERN, an NGO
based in Europe. A participant in the
Durban Group's critique of carbon trading she eloquently describes how
the system favors large
corporations and will prevent a transition to renewable energy
production. Dr. Arjun Makhijani argues against the resurgence of
nuclear power. He holds a Ph.D. in engineering, specializing in nuclear
fusion, from U.C. Berkeley. He is the principal author of the first
study ever done (and
completed in 1971) on the energy conservation potential in the U.S.
economy.
The speakers were recorded at the Confronting the Global Triple Crisis
teach in, organized by the International Forum on Globalization, in
Washington DC in September 15, 2007. The teach in was recorded by
Conference Recording Services in Berkeley, California <http://www.conferencerecording.com/>.

On occasion of the 40th
anniversary of King's murder
WHO KILLED MARTIN LUTHER KING?
Dr. William Pepper at the
Memphis, TN, King Assassination Trial
(This program contains archival recordings never heard before.)
In 1977 the family of Martin Luther King engaged an attorney and
friend, Dr. William Pepper, to investigate a suspicion they had. They
no longer believed that James Earl Ray was the killer. For their peace
of mind, for an accurate record of history, and out of a sense of
justice they conducted a two decade long investigation. The evidence
they uncovered was put before a jury in Memphis,
TN, in November 1999. 70 witnesses testified under oath, 4,000 pages of
transcripts described that evidence, much
of it new. It took the jury 59 minutes to come back with their decision
that exonerated James Earl Ray, who had already died in prison. The
jury found that Loyd Jowers, owner of Jim's Grill, had participated in
a conspiracy to kill King. The evidence showed that the conspiracy
included J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI, Richard Helms and the CIA, the
military, the Memphis police department, and organized crime.
The finding of the jury should have shaken the world. However news of
the verdict, in one of the most important national security trials in
modern history, was suppressed. And to this day, with very few
exceptions, the public does not know that this trial took place and
what the outcome was.
This TUC Radio program presents an archival recording never before
heard: Key parts of the closing argument in the courtroom in Memphis on
December 8, 1999, by Dr. William Pepper. He describes why King had
become dangerous to the powers to be, parts of the local conspiracy,
and the cover-up. You can read the complete set of trial transcripts on
the web site of the King Center at <http://www.thekingcenter.org/news/trial.html>.

Cynthia McKinney
CONFRONTING EMPIRE
The former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney was
invited to England in September 2007. She spoke about Martin Luther
King and the plans
for him to become the running mate of Bobbie Kennedy in his bid for the
US presidency. She was introduced by Annie Machon who quit her job at
the British spy
agency MI5 in protest over MI5 plans to assassinate the Libyan leader
Muammar Gadafy.
In 1992 Cynthia McKinney made history when she became the first African
American woman to represent Georgia in the United States House of
Representatives. McKinney voted against record Bush administration
military budgets, and
challenged the Pentagon to explain
how it "lost" over $2.3 trillion in un-traceable transactions. She
continues to decry the Bush administration's sweetheart deals with
Halliburton, the Carlyle Group, and DynCorp; and she speaks out against
the loss of fundamental freedoms under the Bush administration.
McKinney lost her congressional seat when an estimated 40,000
Republicans voted in the Georgia Democratic Primary to oust her. It is
called "crossover" voting and her supporters filed a lawsuit against
this practice.

Dr. James Hansen
THE THREAT TO THE PLANET
How can we avoid dangerous human-made climate change
Dr. James Hansen is one of the few scientists who have consistently
warned that the impact that humans have on the climate is bringing
about changes that are faster than we ever believed and may be
irreversible if action is not taken now. Hansen is Director of the NASA
Institute for Space Studies in New York City, and he teaches at
Columbia. Since the late 1970s, he has worked on studies of the Earth's
climate. He has run afoul of government censors since the 1980s.
Repeatedly his testimony before Congress was suppressed or
re-written.
Hansen says that the unprecedented and rising amounts of greenhouse
gases added each year AND the speed at which we are altering the energy
balance of the earth are completely out of the range of proven earth
history of hundreds of thousands of years. Hansen fears that we may
soon be reaching feedback mechanism or tipping points such as the
melting of the ice sheets that has already begun on Greenland and West
Antarctica.
In part one of this program Hansen gives a fascinating account of the earth's climate history, in part two he talks about solutions. Dr. Hansen's work - including the slide projections for this talk, can be found at <http://www.columbia.edu/~jeh1>
I added a third program, a collection of the most intriguing
questions from the audience and answers,
by Hansen, on issues such as sea level rise, hurricanes, interglacials,
and the ongoing censorship of climate scientists by the Bush
administration.

John Mearsheimer and
Stephen Walt
THE ISRAEL LOBBY AND U.S. FOREIGN POLICY
John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago and Stephen Walt of
Harvard, have written one of the most
controversial articles in recent memory. ‘The Israel
Lobby,’ originally published in the London Review of Books and on the
web in March 2006, examined one of the most taboo
issues in America: the impact of the Israel lobby on U.S. policy.
The authors say that “the response to the essay was breathtaking. Three
month after the posting the (web site) recorded more than 275,000
downloads”. There was also a media campaign condemning the article and
the authors in the Jerusalem Post, New York Sun, Wall Street Journal,
New Republic and Washington Post.
Now Mearsheimer and Walt have expanded the essay into a 500 page book
entitled, The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy. They argue that the
policies encouraged by the lobby are profoundly damaging to both
America's national interest and Israel's own long-term security.
Mearsheimer and Walt spoke in Berkeley, CA, on September 19, 2007 at an
event organized by Tikkun magazine and Cody’s books. Introduction by
Rabbi Michael Lerner in Part TWO.

Interviews with DR. JAMES HANSEN, NASA and DR.
HERMANN SCHEER,
World Council for Renewable Energy and member of the German Parliament
Dr. James Hansen
is one of the few
climate scientists who has consistently warned that the impact that
humans have on the climate is bringing about changes that are faster
than we ever believed and maybe irreversible if action is not taken
now. Hansen is Director of the NASA Institute for Space Studies in New
York City,
a division of the Goddard Space Flight Center. <http://www.giss.nasa.gov/>
Since the late 1970s, he has worked on studies and computer simulations
of the Earth's climate.
Hansen has run afoul of government censors since the 1980s when he was
asked to testify before Congress. He found that the record of his
testimony had been re-written. His testimony to Vice President Cheney
and other cabinet members in 2001 was ignored. In early 2006 officials
at NASA headquarters ordered the public affairs staff to review
Hansen’s coming lectures, papers, postings on the Goddard Web site and
requests for interviews from journalists.

Dr. Hermann Scheer
A large industrialized country already gets 10% of their electricity
from renewable sources. And if the present rate of conversion is
maintained, this country will have phased out nuclear and fossil fuels
within the next 50 years. And this country, Germany, is not even
blessed with abundant wind or sun. Germany, for 15 years now, has shown
the determinations to move away from centralized to decentralized
power, from commercial to non-commercial energy production, and to come
up with solutions to climate change, peak oil and the dangers of
nuclear power. <http://www.german-renewable-energy.com/Renewables/Navigation/Englisch/root.html>
At the root of these developments is the German Renewable Energy Act,
the EEG. It started as a one page act passed by the German parliament
in 1990. It
was simple and based on three concepts: Free access to the grid to all
producers, the obligation for utilities to purchase, and guaranteed
fixed prices for each producer in accordance with their cost of
production and state of technology. The lead author of the Renewable
Energy Act is Dr. Hermann Scheer, chairman of the World Council for
Renewable Energy, now serving his 6th term as elected member of the
German Parliament.

Michael Ratner and Lynne Stewart
FIGHTING BACK
At an event in San Francisco attorneys Michael
Ratner and Lynne Stewart spoke about what it means to do political
legal work – exclusively and for many, many years. And how that work,
in the case of Lynne Stewart, may lead to government action and the
attempt to put her in prison for her work as an attorney, for 30 years.
Michael Ratner is President of the Center for Constitutional Rights
often heard on Democracy Now on behalf of the prisoners in Guantanamo
and his attempts to
hold Donald Rumsfeld criminally responsible. Here is an opportunity to
get an impression of him as a person, his history, causes, friendships
and dedication to his
work:
Lynne Stewart represented the blind Egyptian cleric Sheikh Omar
Abdel-Rahman and has been accused of helping terrorists by passing on a
press release by him to the media. In her long career as movement
attorney, Stewart has defended Black Liberation activists, Weather
Underground people and many who were too poor
to afford a lawyer. (Recorded in February 2007)

A sharp and funny talk about Superpatriotism and
the importance of being number One.
This talk examines how hype, fear and mindless flag waving supplant
informed debate and commitment to

Parenti raises intriguing questions such as: What does it mean to
love one's country? Why is it so important to be number one - and what
is the messianic message behind so much nationalism?
This is one Parenti's great archival lectures, recorded in 1988 by KGNU

Ilan Pappe
Part ONE: THE ETHNIC CLEANSING OF
PALESTINE
The daily news on Israel and Palestine is
impossible to understand without knowledge of the history of the 1948
expulsion of 3/4 of
a million Palestinians by the Jewish army from what then became the
state of Israel. Even though he had written two books on that period,
the Israeli historian Ilan
Pappe still felt haunted by the story. When, in 1998, the
Israelis opened the military archives it became clear that the Zionist
movement had planned to expel the Palestinians long before 1948. In
2006 Ilan Pappe published his most
recent book: The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine. He spoke about
his work at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands in January
2007.
After years of being involved in political activism, Pappe supported
the boycott of Israel in 2005, including the academic boycott. In the
same year, Pappe
initiated the annual Israeli Right of Return conferences, which called
for the unconditional right of return of the Palestinian refugees who
were expelled in 1948.
Pappe was born in Haifa to German Jewish parents who had fled Nazi
persecution in the 1930s. He graduated from the Hebrew University in
1978, and obtained his Ph.D.. from the University of Oxford in 1984.

Robert Fisk: THE ARMENIAN HOLOCAUST
& CIVIL WAR IN IRAQ AND LEBANON
Part ONE of this program is a 29 minute special for the April 2007
remembrance of the Armenian Holocaust
Robert Fisk, foreign correspondent for the London Independent, received
an exuberant welcome when he came to the Bay Area in December 2006. He
spoke on civil war in Iraq and Lebanon and the ongoing denial of the
genocide of one and a half million Armenians by the Ottoman Turks in
1915.
Even though he consistently criticizes the New York Times they
described him as "probably the most famous foreign correspondent in
Britain" He has over thirty years of experience in international
reporting. His best-selling books, based on his field notes and
recordings, offer strong criticisms of Middle Eastern governments as
well as British and United States government foreign policy. He spoke
on December 14, 2006, in Oakland, CA.

Chris Hedges: AMERICAN FASCISTS
The Christian Right and the War on America
Chris Hedges writes about his new book: "What is happening in America
is revolutionary. A group of religious utopians, with the sympathy and
support of tens of millions of Americans, are slowly dismantling
democratic institutions to establish a religious tyranny, the
springboard to an American fascism." There are now more than 70 million
evangelical Christians living in America, many of whom have established
their own set of media outlets, schools, and communities.
In response to those who argue that fascism cannot possibly come to
the USA Chris Hedges describes the
discontent and despair that historically have driven other peoples into
right wing movements. Hedges reminds us that there is fertile ground
for that in the US today. The top 1 percent control more wealth than
the bottom 90 percent combined. During the research for this book
Hedges traveled through towns
obliterated by the flight of manufacturing jobs and through
soul-less suburbs. He interviewed members of mega churches who lived in
despair and alienation until the church filled
that void. And that's the fodder that demagogues use to amass
totalitarian movements.
Chris Hedges was a foreign correspondent, for nearly two decades, for
The New York Times and lost his job when he spoke out against the war.
He now is a senior fellow at the Nation Institute and teaches in the
Program for American Studies at Princeton University.

"No major political figure, no major
newspaper, has had the courage or the wisdom to say what should now be
obvious, that we must withdraw our military from Iraq and the sooner

disaster for the Iraqi people." (Howard Zinn)
Fort Bragg town hall was filled to capacity by an animated crowd of

Miller says that talking about particular
candidates, crafting a message, getting out the vote etc. are all
crucial but there is a big “if”: We no longer have the right to assume
that we can have a fair election.
We need to reclaim America and insure ourselves the right to vote, he
says, otherwise this experiment in democracy is finished. Most
importantly, the installation of voting machines in state after state
needs to be stopped.

A Question of Survival:
AN ARMAGEDDON OF OUR OWN MAKING
Noam Chomsky’s lecture on the Current Nuclear Danger
at University College Dublin, Ireland, January 19, 2006
Prof. Noam Chomsky repeated the urgent appeal to end all war that was
first issued by Bertrand Russell and Albert Einstein half a century
ago. The
terrible contradiction of our time is that the
US is threatening war, including nuclear strikes, against countries
such as North Korea and Iran for their alleged or real ownership of
nuclear weapons while actively dispersing these weapons and nuclear
material
for reactors to countries of their liking, such as Israel.
While the US is withdrawing from all major treaties limiting nuclear
proliferation and use, such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty,
NTP, or the Anti Ballistic Missile treaty, ABM, it is actively building
so-called useable nuclear weapons. In this
speech Chomsky said if the US was serious about stopping the spread of
nuclear weapons it should "stop compelling" other countries, such as
Iran, to have them.

Tom Russell & Lawrence Ferlinghetti
THE MAN FROM GOD KNOWS WHERE
A conversation and songs
from Russell's CD
The poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti received a CD in the mail – The note
said “this is about another America where the spirit has not been tamed
by the restless machine of modern materialism.” Jack Kerouac wrote
those words and Tom Russell is the singer songwriter of that
CD, entitled: “The Man from God Knows Where” Ferlinghetti and Tom
Russell met for the first time in the summer of
2005.
The setting is an early morning breakfast in a hotel near the historic
San Francisco Fillmore auditorium where Russell had performed the night
before. This is our conversation. I added the songs from The Man from
God Knows Where later - by permission. You will hear Tom Russell, Dave
Van Ronk, Iris DeMent, Dolores Keane and Kari Bremnes.
Tom Russell was born in Los Angeles in 1950 and now makes his home on
the border in El Paso, Texas. He started performing in bars along Skid
Row in Vancouver, B.C. He has recorded eighteen albums of original
material and published two books.
The Man From God Knows Where was termed "one of the most important folk
records ever recorded," by John Lomax III. Rolling Stone and UPI writer
John Swenson noted: "Russell is one of America's great songwriters ...
this record is as close to a Homeric treatment of American history as
we're ever likely to see ... " http://www.tomrussell.com
Lawrence Ferlinghetti needs no introduction. He is writing the second
book of Americus and an anti war opera called "Waratorio".

Robert Fisk:
THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION
The Conquest of the Middle East
In his talk about his new book, The Great War for Civilization, Robert
Fisk offers his thoughts on the most urgent issues of our day: From the
Algerian war, the Palestine Israel war, the invasion of Afghanistan,
the sanctions on Iraq and the spread of depleted uranium, each invasion
by the new and old colonial powers has made Muslims more angry of the
West. In light of decades of bloodshed Fisk says how surprised he is
“how restrained Muslims have been with us.”
In 1917 it was Britain that invaded Iraq, claiming to be the liberator.
Britain was driven out by the insurgency after great loss of life. Now
it is the United States. Will we be able to learn from history? Fisk
says that every journalist in the Middle East needs to keep a history
book in their pocket as reminder why the injustices inflicted by the
West on the Middle East are engraved in people's minds and have a
powerful influence on what happens next. Tragically though, Fisk says,
the relationship of America with the Middle East is the one taboo
subject
in the US.
Robert Fisk has lived in and reported on the Middle East since 1976 and
has seen or tracked down firsthand accounts of all the major events of
the last quarter century. He speaks Arabic and has a keen understanding
of both the plight of ordinary people and the machinations of
extraordinary villains and politicians. He was recorded at a benefit
for the Middle East Children's Alliance ,in Berkeley CA, November 19,
2005. For more information: <http://www.robert-fisk.com/>

Ward Churchill
THE
HISTORY OF COINTELPRO AND THE FBI
This is a passionate, scholarly, and far reaching analysis of the
Counter Intelligence Operations of the FBI. Beginning with World War I,
Churchill covers the Palmer Raids, the defeat of the Anarchists and of
Marcus Garvey; the attacks on the Civil Rights Movement, the 1964
murders of Goodman, Schwerner, and Chaney, and the murders of
Black Panthers. Dedicating his speech to Leonard Peltier, who by now
has spent almost 30 years in prison, Churchill gives a detailed
description of the FBI raid on the Pine Ridge reservation on June 26,
1975 and of the case against Peltier.
Mr. GEORGE GALLOWAY COMES
TO SAN FRANCISCO
A passionate speech by one of the great orators of our time. Topics
include the crimes of the Bush and Blair administrations, the three
failed policies that lead to rising anger and resistance in the Arab
world: Ignoring Palestinian rights, allowing Israel to take land and
possess weapons of mass destruction while Iraq is broken on the wheel

George
Galloway had been a member of the British Labour Party for
36 years when he was expelled, in October 2003, for his opposition to

HURRICANE KATRINA and
the War on the Poor
Eyewitness report by two S.F. paramedics,
Lorrie Beth Slonsky and Larry Bradshaw
Among their experiences: Gretna Sheriffs block the Greater New Orleans
Bridge across the Mississippi and shoot when they and a large group of
African
Americans try to walk to safety. Later their temporary shelter is
destroyed by police and their food and water taken. When they finally
get picked up they and thousands of others sit in a dirty cage at the
New Orleans airport, again without food and water, forced to wait for
the George W. Bush photo opportunity to end. As they arrive in San
Antonio they are made to stand on a dark tarmac and are subjected to
two
dog sniffing ordeals. This and more in a 24 minute interview with
Lorrie Beth and Larry by Maria Gilardin recorded on Sept. 9, 05.

DOWNING STREET MINUTES
With John Bonifaz, Ray McGovern, Cindy
Sheehan, and Joseph Wilson
The Downing Street Minutes say that the Bush administration was already
committed to waging war on
Iraq a year before the war began and was asking the
British government to “fix” the intelligence data and facts around the
policy. The three page memo contains the minutes of a highest level
cabinet meeting with
the British Prime Minister at Downing Street in July 2002.
It was published in the Times of London on May 1, 2005. The Downing
Street Memo created a storm in the international press but was
suppressed in most US media. If the allegations are true they may lead
to impeachment proceedings against George W. Bush.
On Thursday
June 16th, 2005, Rep. John Conyers, ranking Member of
the House Judiciary Committee, along with other Congress Members, held
a 3 hour hearing at the Capitol on the Downing Street Minutes. The
witnesses called were attorney John Bonifaz, veteran CIA analyst Ray
McGovern, Cindy Sheehan whose son Casey was killed in Iraq, and
ambassador Joseph Wilson.
The Downing Street Minutes are posted on <http://www.afterdowningstreet.org>

In early February of 2005 a headline appeared in the London
Independent. It said: "How Mankind Is Sleepwalking to The End Of The
Earth; floods, storms and droughts, melting Arctic ice, shrinking
glaciers, oceans turning to acid. The world's top scientists warned
last week that dangerous climate change is taking place today, not the
day after tomorrow." The award winning environmental writer Geoffrey
Lean wrote these words.
The conference was called: Avoiding Dangerous Climate Change and it was
held by request of the British Government. In order to counter the
refusal of the United States to acknowledge the urgency of the issue of
climate change they brought together 200 respected scientist from the
fields of ecology, glaciology, meteorology, and oceanography.

Global Warming on Greenland (Part 3 of 6)
Possible Collapse of the
Gulf Stream (Part 4 of 6)
Is the melting we are seeing today the precursor of a major
deglaciation of Greenland or a momentary anomaly. How fast will this
process unfold and can deglaciation be stopped if it begins
accelerating due to internal feedback mechanisms. Also, according to
the Hadley Centre models: Even after CO2 levels are brought under
control the oceans will keep expanding – raising the sea levels around
the world - the question is
for how long.

The possible
collapse of the Gulf Stream, leading to a dramatic
cooling of Europe, was considered a "high impact - low probability"
event. Recent data show that there is now a 70% chance of collapse due
to global warming. Michael Schlesinger is Professor of Atmospheric
Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He

The Impacts on Oceans and Land (Part 5 of 6)
The Bush Wars on Climate Science (Part
6 of 6)
Scientist have recently discovered that about half of the man-made
carbon dioxide produced by fossil-fuel burning has been absorbed by the
oceans. CO2 reacts with sea water to form carbonic acid and
that lowers the ph level of the water and makes the oceans more acidic.
Today the ph level of the oceans is already 0.1 unit lower than before
the industrial revolution. These
changes are accelerating the extinction of marine life from plankton to
cod to coral reefs.
Dr. Carol Turley, head of science of the Plymouth Marine Laboratory,
talks about the impact of the increasing acidification of the world's
oceans. She said that the ph level of the oceans had remained
incredibly constant for thousands, if not millions of years. Now
about 400 billion tons of fossil fuel CO2 have been absorbed by the
oceans

Professor
Rik Leemans from the Environmental Sciences Department of
Wageningen University in Holland directs projects on global
biodiversity. He presents studies of birds, fish, insects, lichen and
plants and their struggle for survival under global changes in growing
seasons and distribution.
Animals and plants are on the move everywhere. They try to move north
or up mountains to avoid warming or they follow the warming trends if
they benefit from warm weather. Changes in the oceans are especially
fast. Some plankton species have already moved north by up to 1000
kilometers. Some warm-water fish are moving into the warming seas at a
rate of 250 kilometers every 10 years. Extinction rates are high among
those unable to move and among those who no longer find the other
species they depend on in the new environment.

NOTE: This is the same talk that was already
broadcast twice on C-Span - where it caused a sensation.
David Ray Griffin: 9-11 and
the American Empire,
how should religious people respond (two parts)
David Ray Griffin takes a critical look at the official 9/11 Commission
Report. Professor Griffin argues that "omissions and distortions" in
the report amount to a cover-up by government officials and says that
the available evidence suggests that the
Bush administration was complicit in the 9/11 attacks. Professor
Griffin covers topics he says have been inadequately answered by the
commission. These include questions surrounding the failure of fighter
planes to intercept the hijacked planes, failure to admit that the FBI
had information in advance about the attacks, and the behavior of
President Bush and his Secret Service detail following notification
that a second plane had hit the World Trade Center. The talk was
recorded at the University of Wisconsin in Madison on
April 18, 2005.
Ralph Nader: How to End the War on Iraq
In early 2005 Ralph Nader began a 10 city tour to
stop the war and end the occupation of Iraq. Undaunted by
theoutcome of the 2004 election he presents a passionate critique not
just of
Bush but of the democratic party and launches a grassroots movement of
a million committed activists that demands a complete pull out of
troops and corporations from Iraq within a 6 month period. Nader

Robert Fisk on the Armenian Holocaust
In commemoration of the
90th anniversary of the events of April 1915
This moving talk begins with the account of Fisk
walking the killing fields and still finding reminders of an event that
has been hidden from public consciousness for too long. His talk is
based on research on location and conversations with Armenian elders in
senior homes in Beirut. Fisk spoke before the Armenian National
Committee in San Francisco in March 2001.
This talk on the Armenian Holocaust - and he
explains why he chose that term - also generated much criticism from
those who want silence to shroud these events forever.

Arming the Heavens
Reading from the US Air
Force Transformation Flight Plan
One of TUC Radio's best received programs was a
reading from the Project for the New American Century document on
Rebuilding America's Defenses that predicted the war on Iraq. In that
document the authors, among them Cheney and Rumsfeld, laid out a plan
to place weapons in space in order to maintain US global reach and
military superiority. Like other predictions in the PNAC document the
arming of space is becoming a reality. In early 2005 the Air Force
posted their Transformation Flight Plan on their web site. The plan
discloses strategies for global dominance, refers to new space weapons
based on laser and microwave, and makes the case for nuclear power in
space.

WAR AND FLEECE: How
Economic Shock Therapy Backfired in Iraq
Naomi Klein, the award winning journalist and author of the
international best seller, No Logo, spoke to the abyss between the spin
of the new democratic Iraq in the US media and the reality on
the ground. The wave of privatization, instituted by Paul Bremer and
reinforced by the International Monetary Fund, will not easily be
reversed since the new government needs an impossible to reach majority
to undo Bremer's laws and enact the wishes of the Iraqi people. The
IMF,
the US government, the Paris Club and other international organizations
are making a cruel joke of the promise of self determination in Iraq.

Dr. Helen Caldicott
FOUR MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT
In 2002 Helen Caldicott returned from Australia to – once again - help
build an anti nuclear movement in the US. The so-called end of the Cold
War had
made everybody complacent. Now, thirty years after Helen Caldicott
first appeared in the US and became a charismatic speaker and tireless
organizer she says that matters are worse now than they were then. They
are worse because the old weapons are still in place, worse because
they're building new nuclear weapons, some intended for use in space,
worse because the US violates the major arms control treaties, worse
because the US is now threatening the preemptive use of nuclear
weapons, and worse because very few of us know these facts.
Helen
Caldicott founded the still thriving organization Physicians
for Social Responsibility and was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

The paper was commissioned by Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul

HOWARD LYMAN AND MAD COWS
His lone fight against some
giants of industrial agriculture
(chemical manufacturers and
cattle growers)
The Montana rancher Howard Lyman first came to world attention in 1998.
He and Ophra Winfrey had been sued by Texas cattlemen and feedlot
operators because Lyman had said, on the Ophra show, that mad cow
disease might already be in the US. Since Lyman's warning the
first case of mad cow disease has been confirmed in the US. In Part TWO
Lyman says we are till feeding cows to cows and test less than 1% of
slaughtered cows while Japan is
testing every cow.
In Part ONE
Lyman explains what chemical agriculture did to his
farm, his
family and himself, and what gave him the strength to keep up the fight
against
mad cow disease that is only now beginning to surface to a larger
public.
After selling the majority of his farm Howard Lyman became an organizer
with the Montana Farmer's Union. In 1995 he formed the organization he
now works for: Voice for a Viable Future. He is the author of Mad
Cowboy.
He was recorded at the 22nd National Pesticide Forum in April of 2004
in Berkeley.

COUNT EVERY VOTE!
Elections, Democracy and
Voter Fraud in Ohio
A documentary by Evan Davis
While the international press asks whether George Bush really did get
elected this time, the US commercial media barely pay attention to
voting machines that leave no record, to voters removed from voter
rolls, and to uncounted ballots.
The Pacifica Radio correspondent Evan Davis lives in the battle ground
state of Ohio. He was witness to the unprecedented effort of voter
registration, and to the fight against the use of the Diebold voting
machines long before they were put to use.
He remains involved as investigative journalist in the legal challenges
to the outcome of the vote in Ohio that may change who will be
president for the next four years.

CROSSING THE RUBICON
On the eve of the publication of his new book,
Crossing the Rubicon, Mike Ruppert spoke at the prestigious San
Francisco Commonwealth Club.
His research, laid out on 600 pages and supported by over 1000
footnotes, shows that members of the Bush administration knew about the
impending attack of 9-11 and helped them succeed. Ruppert describes war
games that were conducted on the same day as the WTC attacks with the
same scenario, leading the FAA and NORAD to question whether what they
saw on their screens was a game or reality.
In
part one of the program, Ruppert
investigates the motive for the creation of a new Pearl Harbor, i.e.
the dwindling supplies of oil; in part two he names names, including
Dick Cheney.

times like this
On October 11, 2004 Ralph Nader and Peter Camejo appeared before a standing room only audience of over 2000 at UC Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall. They point to the overwhelming world-wide consensus regarding the US war on Iraq. From Europe to Africa, Asia and Latin America, the war is condemned while the two presidential candidates debate how to wage it more efficiently.
Whatever the
outcome of the current election, the issues raised by
Camejo and Nader are vitally important for our future domestic and
foreign policies; among them reasons for the demise of US democracy,
the electoral rules that leave us with
a dysfunctional two party system, growing corporate power, global
warming and the impending end of oil.

Three out of every five Americans are now overweight. Children who eat
fast food every day gain an extra 6 pounds every year. It now appears
likely that - for the first time in American history - our children
will actually have a shorter life span than their parents.
This program about fast food is not just about the fact that grease,
sugar, and extra calories make us fat and sick. It is about the giant
industries behind fast food that change not only our bodies but
the body of the earth and the lives of farmers who traditionally grew
our foods.
With a cast
of real stars: The physicist and seed collector Vandana
Shiva from India, the Kentucky farmer and poet Wendell Berry, Eric
Schlosser who wrote: Fast Food Nation, the founder of the Slow Food
