BEFORE and AFTER - You probably wondered why the latest news was stuck on October 2011! Well, the project of building a Sun Shed for solar hot water, solar electric, a wood stove inside that also makes hot water, a hand made shower that works perfectly - except when the sun is not shining for more than three days, a small electric pump that brings hot water into the radiant floor of my straw bale house ... all that was much harder to do in between radio programs than I ever anticipated. Also, for the first time I did need professional help in plumbing and electrical installation and for part of the construction. But now, finally it is almost done - and I love it! Opening the tap and feeling the warmth of the sun in the water on my face! Will post some interior shots soon.

Before we even sounded our ranch wide alarm helicopters started taking water from a small lake and dousing the heavily wooded hillside towards Reeves Canyon. A spotter plane flying over this part of Mendocino County had seen a homestead go up in flames. They were unable to save the house but saved both neighbors and the adjacent canyon.

I did not get my camera on time to film the 25 foot high flames. But those who witnesses this end of summer, dry heat, scorched vegetation fire were at first sure this would expand to the ridge top. We saw the wall of fire moving upward and also east with the slight wind. What did the World Learn from the Fukushima Accident?

This is the last of a ten part program series covering the most recent and complex status of the ecological and medical consequences of the Fukushima catastrophe - as well as the very important details of engineering in nuclear power technology. The information was presented at the two day Fukushima Symposium at the New York Academy of Medicine in March 2013. The overwhelming conclusion was that the Fukushima accident is by no means over and another earthquake or tsunami might cause the reactor fuel to ignite.

I'm ending the series with a voice from Japan. I first heard from Ambassador Akio Matsumura in 2011 <http://akiomatsumura.com/>when he launched his ongoing attempt to engage international organizations and the governments of countries most affected to oversee, or even take over the work now done by the owner TEPCO. As a private corporation in charge of the cleanup TEPCO is clearly overwhelmed by the task and also has no credentials for handling it responsibly. They mismanaged Fukushima Daiichi while it was running. TEPCO says it will take 40 years to secure the site. The IAEA, at an April 2013 visit, said that estimate was too low and the damaged infrastructure would not last that long.

To illuminate the urgency of the task to get the cleanup under control, Matsumura points to reactor number 4. Remember the images of that building with the roof torn off, and fires burning inside? The entire structure is leaning, the damaged frame is missing large parts of the outer walls. Inside of what remains of Unit 4, 100 feet above ground, hangs the 1,670 ton fuel pool filled with irradiated fuel rods. You heard from fuel pool expert Bob Alvarez in this series. He says that if an earthquake causes the pool to crack and drain there could be a radiological fire that might re-ignite the other parts of Fukushima Daiichi.

Ken Buesseler
Fukushima Ocean Impacts

Ken Buesseler is Senior Scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution <http://www.whoi.edu/> on Cape Cod. He specializes in natural and man-made radionuclides in the ocean. First he worked on fallout from atmospheric nuclear weapons testing, then on the impacts of the Chernobyl explosion on the Black Sea. Most recently he examined radionuclide contaminants in the Pacific ocean after the melt downs of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants.

Within weeks of the accident Buesseler managed to charter and equip a research vessel that arrived off the coast of Japan in June of 2011 to take the first ocean measurements. And you are about to hear his report from that scientific venture and his follow-up.

The most shocking result in those first weeks was that the level of radioactive Cesium in the water off Fukushima had risen from 1 1/2 Bq per cubic meter to 15 and later to an unprecedented 100 million Bq per cubic meter.

The research team also found that - even though the levels of radioactive isotopes have come down in the past year they did not return to pre accident levels. Buesseler says it also shows that there is a constant inflow of new radioactivity from the ruined nuclear plant itself and also from the ground water and rivers that flow into the ocean through the contaminated land of the Fukushima province. As of March 2013 radiation in water near the plant was still a thousand time higher than it once was.

Post Fukushima Increases in Thyroid disease in Newborns
on the West Coast of the USA

On March 7, 2013, an article was published in the Open Journal of Pediatrics <http://www.scirp.org/journal/PaperInformation.aspx?PaperID=28599>. Co-written by Joseph Mangano and Dr. Jeanette Sherman it stated that in the first 15 weeks, after the fallout from Japan arrived in the US, the number of newborns with Hypothyroid disease increased by 28% on the West Coast while declining by 3% in the rest of the country. Mangano presented this report on March 12, 2013, at the Fukushima Symposium at the New York Academy of Medicine in New York City.

Wladimir Wertelecki
Congenital Malformations in the Ukraine and the Chernobyl Accident

When Wladimir Wertelecki took the podium at the Fukushima Symposium in New York City he clearly stated that he was presenting breaking news. As this program goes to broadcast in May, 2013, two month after his talk, no major media and no international agency have taken up this report.

Wertelecki presented the results of OMNI-Net Ukraine's Congenital Malformations Monitoring Program; the results of ten years of scientific study of birth defects of children and their possible relation to ionizing radiation. Since 2000 OMNI-Net scientists have conducted research of the Rivne, Polissia region just north-west of the exploded Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

They found statistically higher than normal incidents of the most heartbreaking birth defects: NTD, Neural Tube Defects of the brain or spinal cord; Anencephaly, where most of the brain and skull do not develop; Microcephaly, a condition in which the circumference of the head and the brain size are smaller than normal.

The data are collected under strict scientific protocols. They are based on a population registry of every baby born in the last ten years with 15,000 measurements; as well as whole body radiation counts that include pregnant women, with a data base of 20,000.

Wladimir Wertelecki was born in Poland in 1936. He trained in pediatrics at Washington University and in Clinical Genetics at the Harvard School of Medicine. From 1968 to 1970 he served as a Senior Surgeon of the United States Public Health Service. From 1974 to 2010 he was chair of the department of medical genetics at the University of South Alabama. Now retired he is dedicated to contributing to a clearer scientific and public understanding of the global impacts of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986.

When the biologist, Professor Tim Mousseau, concluded this talk by showing heartbreaking pictures of the birds of Chernobyl and their tumors and birth defects, the physician and anti nuclear campaigner Dr. Helen Caldicott stepped up to the podium to thank him.

She said: "I want to pay homage to Tim Mousseau, who with his colleagues is actually endangering his life by going into extremely high radioactive areas doing pioneering work, which is going to change the concept of radiation exposure to humans. What is happening to the animals, the insects and the plants is going to happen to us."

Mousseau is a Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of South Carolina. For 13 years he and his scientific collaborator Anders Moller from the University of Paris, Sud, have done research in the most contaminated areas of Chernobyl. When Fukushima Daiichi exploded they began field work there as well. They study birds, insects, microbes, and plants at over 1,000 sites, creating the most diligent inventories of each study area and returning year after year. They found significantly increased rates of genetic damage in direct proportion to the level of exposure to radioactive contaminants.

Post-Fukushima Food Monitoring
and: Gender Matters in the Atomic Age

Cindy Folkers specializes in radiation impacts on health. She works with Beyond Nuclear. They call attention to the connections between nuclear power and nuclear weapons and the need to abandon both to safeguard our future. Two weeks after Folkers gave this talk, Beyond Nuclear, in coalition with other groups, filed a petition with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to drastically reduce the amount of radioactive cesium permitted in food, from an unreasonable 1200 Bq/kg, to 5 Bq/kg. In post-Chernobyl Belarus, at just 11 Bq/kg of internal cesium contamination children can be susceptible to heart problems. At 50 Bq/kg, children can start having permanent tissue damage.  

Mary Olson is Southeast Regional Director of NIRS, the Nuclear Information and Resource Services. She speaks on: Gender Matters in the Atomic Age. In 2011 Mary Olson published a briefing paper on the fact that Women as a group suffer significantly more from the impact of ionizing radiation than do men. There is a dramatic fifty-percent greater incidence of cancer and fifty-percent greater rate of death from cancer among women, compared to the effects of the same radiation dose level to men.

Massive Radiation Contamination of Japan with Radioactive Cesium

Steven Starr says: "Long lived radio-nuclides such as Cesium 137 are something new to us as a species. Although they are invisible to our senses they are millions of times more poisonous than most of the common poisons we are familiar with. They emit radiation, invisible forms  of matter and energy, that we might compare to fire. It's not a fire that can be scattered of suffocated because it burns at the atomic level, it comes from the disintegration of single atoms".

Starr gives an update as to what people in Japan are facing now and into the future. He explains how Cesium 137 is created in the Nuclear Power Plant and how it disperses and continues to move. How it enters the body, mainly via contaminated food, and bio-accumulates in humans, plants and animals. He refers to studies of the Chernobyl disaster and lists the organs affected and the diseases caused by Cesium 137. He takes issue with regulations that set unacceptably low exposure standards and ignore the added danger from Cesium 137 that lodges inside the body and creates a long active source of exposure.

David Freeman
My Experience with Nuclear Power

Freeman served in Chief Executive positions at the largest power authorities in the world, including New York Power Authority, the TVA in Tennessee Valley, and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
 
In spite of, or maybe really because of, being the consummate insider in energy production, Freeman is one of the most brilliant, funny and knowledgeable critics of fossil fuels and nuclear power. Freeman closed down 8 nuclear reactor projects during his tenure as Chief Executive at the TVA, and one more when he was General Manager of the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District in California.

His 2007 book: Winning our Energy Independence, describes in detail the urgent need of weaning the U.S. from what he calls the "three poisons" -- coal, oil, and nuclear. He believes that energy and climate pose the greatest threats America has ever faced and this is our opportunity to resolve all aspects of that crisis at once: In this book he lays out how renewable energy can replace oil, coal as well as nuclear.

Bob Alvarez
SPENT FUEL POOLS AND RADIOACTIVE WASTE

Bob Alvarez, Senior Scholar at the Institute for Policy Studies became the focus of intense character assassination by the nuclear industry when he wrote in April 2012: Why Fukushima Is a Greater Disaster than Chernobyl and a Warning Sign for the U.S. He explained: "The radioactive inventory of all the irradiated nuclear fuel stored in spent fuel pools at Fukushima is far greater and even more problematic than the molten reactor cores."  

"Spent" fuel is a misnomer, far from being harmless, irradiated fuel remains too radioactive to handle for 5 years and thermally and radiologically dangerous way beyond that period. When the US government was looking for permanent storage for high level waste, which includes fuel rods, they were looking for a site that would remain safe for at least 100,000 years. Not surprisingly they found none, and had to recognize that Yucca Mountain, Nevada, was not safe either.

The US Government Accountability Office considers spent fuel one of the most hazardous substances on the earth. Nevertheless the NRC allows nuclear plant operators to keep fuel rods past the 5 year mark in ever more densely packed fuel pools in unreinforced building that resemble a WalMart or car dealership.

Alvarez urges us to learn from the lessons at Fukushima. The same type nuclear power plant, The General Electric Mark I and II with dangerous fuel pools situated on the top of the buildings, are in use in the US. Alvarez demands that fuel be removed from the pools and placed in dry storage in caskets or casks. A suggestion the nuclear industry resists because it is cheaper to keep the fuel rods in the pools.

Arnie Gundersen
WHAT DID THEY KNOW, WHEN DID THEY KNOW IT?

Gundersen argues that the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi accident in Japan began in 1965, inside the US, with General Electric and the engineers who designed the site plan and architecture for the Mark I reactor at Fukushima. He also points the finger at the US Atomic Energy Commission that permitted a flawed design to be licensed and built.

Gundersen holds an MA in nuclear engineering and once worked for the nuclear industry. He was an expert witness on the Three Mile Island partial melt-down, and more recently on the serious safety risks at the Vermont Yankee and California's San Onofre reactors. Gary Nabhan
THE FUTURE OF ORCHARDS IN TIMES OF CLIMATE CHANGE

Farmers are not debating weather climate change is real or not, they are dealing with it already. At the 2012 Heirloom Seed Expo the co-founder of the local food movement, ethnobotanist and tender of a 6 acre orchard in Arizona, Gary Nabhan, made a wise and moving appeal to value the vast contribution orchards can make to mitigating climate change and resisting the impact of drought and heat.

Gary Nabhan, in 2011, made the Utne reader list of 30 people who made the world a better place to live. As teacher in academia and author of over 25 books, he inspired a new generation to understand the link between bio-diversity and cultural diversity. Many of them now dream of becoming farmers to make a difference with their lives. But few will succeed since land is so hard to find and finance. However there is a bright future in the intriguing task of tending and beginning new orchards on small acreage.

In his 2012 talk Nabhan gave credit to the seed saver movement that he co-founded. At the same time he made an eloquent case for the vitality and resilience of fruit trees and the pleasure of re-discovering long forgotten varieties in abandoned orchards.

Cathrine Sneed
THE GARDEN PROJECT IN SAN FRANCISCO

When prisoners in the San Francisco County Jail asked to remain in jail beyond their release date, prison authorities, Sheriff Hennessy, and Cathrine Sneed who started the gardening program that prisoners did not want to leave, - all realized that they had created a success, a model, or a mystery.
Cathrine Sneed credits John Steinbeck. In Grapes of Wrath he writes that there is hope, even in abject poverty, as long as the connection to the land can be restored.

The way in which she has connected land, the growing of organic food, and the resolution to hunger, addiction, unhealthy food, and crime, has become a model not just for prisons, but for society at large.
The 1992 Garden Project just celebrated its 30th anniversary. It started inside the County jail ten years earlier - but Cathrine Sneed moved the project beyond the prison walls to connect with released prisoners and then with youth before they even became involved with the Law. And that is the important difference to prison garden project elsewhere. Most of them remain isolated behind prison walls and released prisoners have no easy way to connect with land and food.

I first met Cathrine Sneed at the annual Eco Farm conference in Asilomar, CA in 1998. She had been asked to give the opening night address to organic farmers and gardeners. This is a rebroadcast of that event.

When Sandor Katz escaped from NY City and joined a rural off the electric grid community in Tennessee a little over two decades ago he knew very little about growing vegetables and even less about fermenting them. His amazing development as teacher and author of two books: Wild Fermentation and The Art of Fermentation, was fueled by fond memories of pickles he relished as a kid in NYC, love for the nourishing power of good foods, and his deep interest in the culture, art and history of fermentation. His great appeal as a teacher and speaker also lies in his direct and honest approach to life. He is openly gay and living with AIDS and is convinced of the healing power of food.

The 2012 Heirloom Seed Expo, an annual event at the height of the harvest season in Santa Rosa, CA, brought together the dedicated food activists with their organized resistance to genetically modified foods and the steadfast farmers who have been protecting our common inheritance in seeds and plants. In my recent TUC radio programs I have focused on those who make the case that much of current industrial food ranges from "bad for you" to deadly. Seniors for Peace
Happy Tenth Anniversary!
THE ORIGIN OF THE LONGEST CONTINUOUS PEACE RALLY IN THE BAY AREA

We remember the huge demonstrations against the war on Iraq in 2003. Of those hundreds of thousands who came out for peace across the world mostly films, photos and very fond memories survive. But one group, maybe the most unlikely of all, the Seniors for Peace in Mill Valley, CA, just kept going.  For ten years now this year, 2013, every Friday at 4 pm rain or shine, they spend an hour at the intersection of Miller and Camino Alto with hand drums, guitar, harmonica, fiddle and banners for peace. That in spite of the need of some to use a wheelchair or walker since their average age is now 86 and many are in their nineties.
 
And that’s not all. They have 144 dues paying members. They expanded their peace work into campaigns for Afghanistan, Haiti, and tsunami relief, and they address local wage and housing issues as well as global warming. Most recently they voted to donate $100 to the Marin County district attorney's gun buy-back program.

This is the recording of their second ever rally in 2003. Many of those original members have found their personal peace during the last ten years and only their eloquent voices survive. But as Freda Engel, now 93, told me: “We have a wonderful crop of youngsters in their 80s who are taking our places”.

Arjun Makhijani
FROM PEARL HARBOR TO HIROSHIMA

Disarmament is more urgently needed now that nuclear weapons have spread far beyond the original weapons states and there are even voices in Japan's parliament today that call for nuclear weapons. And Makhijani shows that we can only find the path back from the abyss if we are clear and honest about how nuclear weapons were invented and first used. And there is much information in this talk that has been shunned or kept secret.

In common history Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima represent the beginning and the end events of World War II suggesting that the attack on Pearl Harbor forced the US into war and the bombing of Hiroshima saved the lives of up to one million US soldiers who might have been killed in an invasion of Japan. With help from long ignored or classified information Arjun Makhijani re-analyzes both events. This talk, given to Nuke Free Now in August 2012 near the Los Alamos Weapons Lab, presents thought provoking information about why and how nuclear weapons were developed and who really was in control of their use.
 
Questions raised are: Why was the US fleet moved from San Diego to Pearl Harbor? Does the Japanese attack have anything to do with the US oil embargo? What were the original goals of the Manhattan Project and why and when were they changed? And who was in charge of this secret program when even the US Vice President or the generals responsible for WWII did not know?
 
Makhijani, originally from Mumbai, India, holds a Ph.D. in engineering with focus on nuclear fusion from the University of California, Berkeley. He has written books and articles on the nuclear fuel cycle, weapons production, testing, workers' exposure to radiation and nuclear waste. He also wrote the ground breaking book: Carbon-Free and Nuclear-Free: A Roadmap for U.S. Energy Policy, the first analysis of a transition to a U.S. economy based completely on renewable energy. Makhijani is President of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, the website is IEER.org and has three decades of activism for disarmament.

Tribute to the Playwright and Poet on his 115th Birthday

Even though the German playwright, poet, director and theoretician of the stage was persecuted by the Nazi's, and then forced to leave his exile home in the US when he was accused of being a communist, he did become a major influence on visual and performance artists such as Jean Luc Godard, Robert Wilson, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Augusto Boal, Pina Bausch, Dario Fo and many others.

His most famous plays, the Threepenny Opera and the Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny were just two of over sixty plays. During the war years, Brecht became a prominent writer of the "Literature in Exile". He expressed his opposition to the National Socialist and Fascist movements in his most often performed plays: Mother Courage, The Good Person of Szechwan, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Fear and Misery of the Third Reich, and the Life of Galileo that he revised after the dropping of the atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. One of his most searing, funny, frightening and historically accurate plays against Hitler is the The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. The play presented all major Nazis, as well as their supporters, masked as members of a Mafia operation. The play followed precisely the stages of the Nazi's seizure of power and posed the most important question: Could Hitler's rise have been stopped?

On Brecht's 100ds birthday the Royal National Theatre from London, under their first formidable woman director Di Trevis, gave a performance in his honor in San Francisco. They presented songs, and read from poetry and plays. I was given permission to record the songs during the dress rehearsal and include them in this broadcast. They are, in order of appearance: Song of the SA Man, The Seven Deadly Sins, To a Portable Radio, The Ballad of the "Jewish Whore" Marie Sanders, To Those Born Later, Hollywood Elegy, The Moldau, and Everything or Nothing.

When the Stanford Professor Stephen Schneider died on a return flight from a climate conference in Sweden in 2010 the world lost one the great and courageous climate scientists. He and Prof. James Hansen risked their careers by researching and publishing on climate change since the 1980s and the world would be a very different place today had their warnings been heeded instead of denied and disparaged.
This conversation was recorded in March 2001 in the garden of Schneider’s home near the Stanford Campus. He had just returned from his work with the IPCC. Thousands of scientists are making contributions that are reviewed by the IPCC and then must be approved line by line by all 120 plus member nations. Governments such as the US, China, Saudi Arabia often exercise their veto rights over final publication.

The 2001 IPCC report was the strongest so far and Schneider was commenting on the proof of warming in the movements of plants, animals and ice. He explains how temperature records are established over 1,000 year time period and how the last 100 years show an increase that is off the charts. He ends with his vision of a cooperative world – the only way the climate crisis can be resolved.

Schneider gave the opening address at the "Avoiding Dangerous Climate Change" conference at the Hadley Centre in England on February 1, 2005. At the request of the British government 200 scientists convened to counter the refusal of the US administration to acknowledge the urgency of the problems related to climate change. Data on the accelerated melting of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, and the possible collapse of the Gulf Stream caused the greatest concerns, but were not covered in the US commercial media.

Dr. Stephen Schneider was professor in the Biological Sciences Department at Stanford University and former Department Director at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colorado. Schneider’s name came up in December 2012 when the “Stephen Schneider Award for Outstanding Climate Science Communications” was given to NASA Climatologist James Hansen. The ceremony by Climate ONE at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco united the two men who had been colleagues and friends for decades.

In TUC radio’s last program you heard Hansen’s acceptance speech. This – by extension is my credit to Schneider whose name on the press coverage of the award came up only as a quote: “a Stanford professor who died”. Nothing about his very unique and holistic view based on his expertise in biology and atmospheric science, his ability to describe how climate and life evolved together – and how that process is falling apart as humans are disturbing the earth. And nothing about his work with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and his co-share of the Nobel Price with the IPCC.

I interviewed Stephen Schneider three times and consider each recording a treasure. Here today is my first meeting with Schneider in his office at Stanford in 1998. At that time he was the only scientist I could find who was willing to talk candidly on the record on climate change.

Dr. Stephen Schneider was professor in the Biological Sciences Department at Stanford University and former Department Director at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colorado. Schneider was also Coordinating Lead Author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report (2007). Schneider’s research included modeling of the atmosphere, climate change, and "the relationship of biological systems to global climate change. Schneider is the author of (2009) Science as a Contact Sport: Inside the Battle to Save the Earth's Climate; (1989) "Global Warming, are we entering the Greenhouse Century"; (1997) "Laboratory Earth " and with Randi Londer (1984) "The Co-evolution of Climate and Life" and, as co-author with Michael D. Mastrandrea (October 2010): "Preparing for Climate Change."

Dr. James Hansen heads the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and is Adjunct Professor at Columbia University's Earth Institute. He is one the first climate scientists to issue an urgent warning on climate change and has been embattled ever since – and stood his ground. Now, a quarter century later he speaks, campaigns, and issues scientific papers with an ever growing group of concerned scientists from across the world. He works with Bill McKibben on the campaign against the Keystone XL Pipeline, joined in civil disobedience and was arrested. Hansen has very clear ideas as to what needs to be done politically to face the immediate danger of climate change.
 
On December 4, 2012 Hansen received the Stephen Schneider Award for Climate Science Communication at the Commonwealth Club of California in San Francisco. Raised in a working class Italian family in East Harlem, New York City, Parenti went on to receive his Ph.D. in political science at Yale in 1962. His academic career was cut short by his dismissal after he was arrested for protesting the US war on Vietnam. Parenti became an independent scholar, lecturer and author of over 20 books. And he remained an activist as well.

Now that Thanksgiving is behind us we may be more open to an unflinching look at genocide and denial in America. Churchill compares the treatment of North American Indians to historical instances of genocide by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, Turks against Armenians, as well as Nazis against the Poles and Jews. With one important difference. This genocide is unparalleled in term of the size of population and in the way it was sustained through time.

In the first of two parts Churchill sets out to prove that the numbers of how many Indians lived North of the Rio Grande were cooked - not  one but about fifteen million. Part TWO ends with an extraordinary statement on the importance of knowing history:  "We got an entire society here that, with its own collaboration, quells certain knowledge that would disrupt its very convenient scenarios of what it wants to be by denying what it has been...  And so we punch holes into the domes of false reality that have been constructed to shield the society from an understanding of itself. All this in order to get to the subliminal circumstances which can motivate people to tangibly, finally, oppose the order of things that we encounter in such a way as they can be transformed. I think the key to the whole of America lies right here – in its refusal to understand itself is the key to it's refusal ultimately to change itself. And change is that which we most desperately need."

John Trudell
What it means to be a Human Being

This is a moving, thought provoking spoken word and poetry address by the Native American musician and leader John Trudell. He did not set out to be a writer. His poetic gift developed out of the remarkable, sometimes unbearable circumstances of his life.

Trudell grew up on and around the Santee Sioux reservation near Omaha, Nebraska. In 1969 he participated in the Indians of All Tribes occupation of Alcatraz. From 1973 to 1979 her served as national chairman of the American Indian Movement. The government response to A.I.M. was swift Trudell said, "They waged a war against us. They hunted us down. They killed, jailed, destroyed by any means necessary."

In 1979 that war took a terrible personal toll on John Trudell. On February 11, 1979 he led a march to the FBI headquarters in Washington D.C. Approximately 12 hours later a fire "of suspicious origin" burned down Trudell's home on the Shoshone Paiute reservation in Nevada, killing his wife Tina, their three children, and Tina's mother. Devastated by the loss of his family, Trudell withdrew from the world; "writing words" became his way "to keep some sanity" and continue to survive.

Trudell spoke in March 2001 in San Francisco at a benefit for the U'wa and their resistance to oil drilling on their ancestral land in Colombia - a struggle that continues till today. Contact John Trudell HERE.

Edward Said
PALESTINE AND THE UNIVERSALITY OF HUMAN RIGHTS

This is Said’s last major speech on Palestine, the war on Iraq and the Bush administration. On September 25, 2003, a message made its way around the world. Edward Said, Palestinian American, world famous professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, and fearless defender of the Palestinian cause had died of leukemia in New York City, far from the city of Jerusalem where he was born in 1935.

In 1948 Said and his family were forced to leave Palestine for Cairo when the newly founded state of Israel took their ancestral home. Later Said came to the US, studied at Princeton and Harvard and went on to teach at Yale and Columbia. He was not only a renowned academic but also an eloquent spokesperson for Palestinian rights and sovereignty.

Said begins with comments on the Bush administration and the war on Iraq and continues with a report on Gaza, still under military occupation. He also refers to the first and second Intifada, the beginning of the building of the Separation Wall; and the divestment and boycott campaign in the US. All events are important historic dates and eerily contemporary. Said ends with a very personal description of the healing collaboration between him and the Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim. The youth orchestra that they founded together in 1999 still forms in 2012.

Said was recorded at UC Berkeley in February of 2003 – his last public address before his death seven months later. He leaves behind a treasure of writings including his most influential book, Orientalism (1978), an examination of the way the West perceives the Islamic world; as well as books inspired by his passionate advocacy of the Palestinian cause, including The Question of Palestine, (1979), Covering Islam (1981), After the Last Sky (1986), Blaming the Victims (1988), and Culture and Imperialism (1993).

Miko Peled:  THE GENERAL'S SON
Journey of an Israeli in Palestine

Miko Peled's father was the Israeli major general Matti Peled. He was part of the General Staff during the Six Day War in 1967. Israel then conquered the West Bank, Gaza, the Golan Heights and Sinai, setting the stage for the untenable situation the Palestinians face today. His son Miko visited the very territories his father had helped to conquer. He formed friendships in the West Bank, re-considered his own upbringing and did much original research to re-write with authority the history he was taught growing up in Israel.

In the second half of his talk Miko Peled talks about the moment in his life where everything changed. His 13 year old niece Smadar was among those killed in Jerusalem by two Palestinian suicide bombers. Miko Peled learned from his sister Nurit. She surprised the world press by blaming not the Palestinians but the Israeli government for the death of her daughter. She said the brutal occupation of Palestine had led to a measure of despair that caused the young suicide bombers to take their own lives, along with that of her daughter. Peled also explains why the two state solution is no longer possible and calls for one secular democratic state in which Palestinians and Israelis live side by side.

Miko Peled's book: The General's Son, was published in 2012. The poet Alice Walker wrote the foreword and said that this book is the most hopeful on the topic of Israel/Palestine. Peled was recorded by Jeffrey Blankfort in Berkeley, CA, on September 19, 2012. He spoke at a benefit for clean water for children in Gaza, organized by the Middle East Children's Alliance.

The battle lines are drawn over safety of genetically modified plants and animals between the corporations that make them, and farmers and consumers expected to handle and eat them.

Don Huber is Professor Emeritus of Plant Pathology. He taught, researched and published at Purdue University for thirty-five years on plant physiology, microbiology, pathology and soil-borne disease control. Huber came out of retirement to speak out on the dangers of glyphosate and genetically modified plants.

Monsanto already launched a campaign to discredit him in spite of his impeccable credentials that even include his work, from 1963 to 1971, at the U.S. Army Edgewood Proving Ground and Ft. Detrick Biological Laboratories in Maryland. There he did research on chemical and biological warfare, qualifying him well for his current work on GMOs.

Don Huber came from the land. He grew up on a citrus and poultry farm in Arizona and later a dairy farm in Idaho. He worked his way through college at a sawmill, in construction, washing pots and pans, and janitorial jobs. Huber came to the second annual Heirloom Seed Expo in Santa Rosa, California, in September 2012, to present his research. Recorded 9/12/2012

In a David VS Goliath fight a grassroots group joined by organic food, farm and environmental organizations, is facing some of the most powerful corporations, including Monsanto, DuPont, BASF, Bayer, and Dow over the deceptively simple issue of labeling GMO foods. Almost one million Californians made it possible for the labeling proposal to be placed on the November 2012 ballot as Prop. 37, however as of production of the program on September 25, over $30 million have already been committed by the GMO industry and pesticide producers to defeat Prop 37.

This program is a personal portrait of the farmer, midwife and now grandmother from Chico, CA, Pamm Larry, who single-handedly initiated the labeling campaign and met thousands along the way who also want to see genetically modified food labeled.

Both sides agree one one thing: Whatever the outcome, the California election result for Proposition 37 will not be the end of the issue by any means. As of September 2012, 11 other states have already formed a coalition to initiate GMO labeling campaigns via legislation or ballot initiatives patterned after Prop. 37. So even if money wins over people in California the issue will not go away. If Prop. 37 passes the Ag. chemical and industrial food corporate lobby, headed by Monsanto, have already warned of a legal challenge.

On the same day as organic farmers met in Santa Rosa, CA, for the second annual Heirloom Seed Expo the 60 day comment period ended for twelve new genetically engineered products. While a growing number of family farmers, medical professionals, and plant scientists are warning of the health risks of GMO plants and animals, the Obama administration has sped up their approval process.

The sense of urgency was also heightened by another development. GMOs, mostly corn and soy, have been planted in the US for almost 20 years. However that corn and soy have been mainly used for animal feed, ethanol or for starch and corn sugar that has been added as ingredient to processed foods for humans, junk food and soft drinks. As of 2012 GMO foods will be aggressively promoted to be eaten directly. Corn, apples, potatoes, beets, papayas, squash and tomatoes etc. are already in the pipe line. So the battle over mandatory labeling of GMO foods has become more passionate and more urgent.

Wenonah Hauter is the Executive Director of Food & Water Watch. The organization works to ensure that the food, water and fish we consume is safe, accessible and sustainably produced.

California Prop. 37 on the November ballot, requiring the labeling of GMOs, has the attention of the country and even the world. YES on 37 collected $3 Million, NO on 37 is funded by Monsanto, DuPont, Pepsi, BASF, Dow, Nestle, Coca-Cola and others to the tune of $25 million.  Vandana Shiva addresses science and politics of GMOs in a passionate, convincing way without mentioning Prop. 37.

Shiva was recorded in September 2011 at the first national Heirloom Seed Expo held in Santa Rosa, CA. 10,000 people had come on short notice to see plants and seeds that would already be extinct had not someone lovingly collected and bred them.

Vandana Shiva explains how biotechnology creates super weeds, poisons beneficial insects and soil microbes and only brings high yields when fertilizers, pesticides and abundant water are applied. She reports on Monsanto's intrusion into the Indian market by burning heirloom seeds, and locking farmers and seed vendors into exclusive agreements. Monsanto is using the patent rights they received via former Monsanto lawyer Clarence Thomas on the US Supreme Court to collect royalty payments and make it illegal to save and exchange seeds. She calls for the international abolition of GMOs and the removal of patents since seeds are a gift from nature to be shared freely.

Vandana Shiva, trained in quantum physics, became a seed saver and ecologist in 1982. She and her organization Navdanya <http://www.navdanya.org/> have done a huge part of the work limiting the spread of GMOs into India. For her the attempts to impose GMOs on India is a war on life and the most recent wave of colonialism. She and the members of Navdanya learned from Gandhi's campaigns against the British - and as Gandhi chose the spinning wheel and salt, they chose the seed as the vessel of life and dedicated themselves to its protection.

This program is about academic freedom, independent thinking, corporate intervention into science, the buying of academia, the collusion of regulatory agencies with the very corporations they are to oversee and maybe - most frightening of all - the invasion of the DNA, the inner spaces and the self organization of life. Arpad Pusztai was an advocate of genetic engineering until his research with rats showed serious damage to their immune system and organ growth when they were fed with genetically engineered potatoes. He was fired from his job as Principal Scientific Officer at the Rowett Institute in Scotland, a job he had held for 30 years.

Tyrone Hayes did research on the effects of Atrazine, the world's most widely used agricultural chemical as part of a study of breast and prostate cancer. He found damage to tissue and organs of amphibians including sex changes caused by fluctuating levels of estrogen and testosterone.  His research was suppressed, and the industry financed research to discredit his work.

John Losey discovered that Monarch butterfly caterpillars can die when they eat pollen from engineered corn plants. The industry waged an unsuccessful campaign to suppress his report.

Ignacio Chapela discovered that engineered corn has already invaded the cradle of corn in Oaxaca, Mexico. A campaign was begun to discredit him and he was denied tenure in spite of the full support of his colleagues. Two years after this event the University of California, Berkeley, reversed its 2003 rejection of tenure and hired Chapela as regular member of the faculty.

They are willing to work on fuel removal in the most dangerous areas of Fukushima Daiichi to protect younger workers from high radiation doses. They said they are elders, were no longer having children and might die of natural causes before some of the long latency cancers would make them seriously ill.

Now 700 plus members strong, they are retired workers from Fukushima, and engineers and technicians from other branches of industry. They made this extraordinary offer only four weeks after the Fukushima disaster. However 14 months later TEPCO has not yet given them permission to work.

The Skilled Veterans are alerting the international community to the serious problems with the cleanup at Fukushima Daiichi. 11,400 fuel rods are stuck in damaged buildings, and in Unit 4 100 feet up in the air. If they were to lose cooling during the 20 year plus removal to safe storage a fire could spread 85 times the amount of Cs137 of the Chernobyl accident around the globe.

Instead of honoring its victims at this time Chernobyl is referenced to minimize the impact of Fukuchima. Supposedly only 35 people died. The World Health Organization and the IAEA, whose mission is to promote nuclear power, claim that "there is no scientific evidence of increases in overall cancer incidence or mortality rates or in rates of non-malignant disorders that could be related to radiation exposure from Chernobyl."

That the reality on the ground is very different comes to life in a book, Chernobyl: Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment. The number of victimes so far is estimated to be between 600,000 and, in this book, 1.9 million. Cesium-137 from the Chernobyl nuclear accident was found in the Antarctic in snow that fell from 1987 to 88 It will remain there, radioactive, for 300 years.

Yes, there are cancers to specific organs, many thyroid cancers caused by Iodine 131 and 129 but there are also diseases that affect body systems such as the whole endocrine system, not just the thyroid, or the immune system, the respiratory and the reproductive systems. - Also a brief explanation of "half life" "hot spots" and why background radiation is different from radiation from nuclear processes.
 

SUMMARY Part THREE
This program presents the consequences of the Chernobyl explosion on the environment. How has the radiation affected - and continues to affect air, water, the soil, plants and animals. How does radiation move, disperse, bio-accumulate and enter the food chain. Specific examples are from studies on rivers and lakes, wild and domestic animals, birds, fish, fungi, bacteria, viruses, studies that show that they were all affected, in varying degrees, but without exception.

This last of four programs presents important information on the plight of the children of Chernobyl who - to this day - need vacations in uncontaminated areas to detoxify their bodies from some of the embedded radioactive substances that they absorb in every day life, substances such as cesium, cobalt, thorium, plutonium etc. Also explained is the danger of contaminated food, and how to set up ongoing projects, under control of local communities, to deal with the persisting radiation and find methods to measure the burden of internal radiation.
 

Chernobyl: Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment was first published in 2009 in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences  -  and promptly ignored. After an original print run of only 700 copies the report is no longer available from the Academy. However, the authors and editor are offering the book for free as pdf file - and they are placing a new print run back into circulation.

As world attention is focused on the severely damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan it become apparent how little is known about the radioactive substances being released and their impacts on life.

Helen Caldicott says that 200 new elements are made inside a nuclear reactor, all intensely radioactive, some lasting seconds, some 17 million years. Many of them are carcinogenic, some are mutagenic. In this speech she explains how radiation induces cancers and mutations, and describes the effects of the four most significant isotopes present in nuclear power plants: radioactive iodine-131, cesium-137, strontium-90, and plutonium-239.

This a an extremely timely excerpt of a one hour lecture given in 2009. Helen Caldicott was then campaigning against the pro-nuclear power stance of the Obama administration. She spoke to create awareness of the terrible danger from nuclear reactors and demanded that no new plants be built and the existing reactors be closed.

For almost 40 years the Australian physician Dr. Helen Caldicott has campaigned against nuclear weapons and nuclear power. In 1971 she led her first successful antinuclear campaign that stopped French atmospheric testing in the Pacific. She came to the US in 1977 and worked and taught at Harvard Medical School and the Children's Hospital Boston. Physicians for Social Responsibility, the organization that she founded, received a Nobel Peace Prize.

How many nuclear power plant accidents does it take to come to that conclusion. Even after Fukushima there is very little movement in that direction. Why is that? Are we mistaken or uninformed about the dangers of nuclear radiation? Do we believe again - and over again this time - that there are safe doses of radiation? That radiation from power plants will not stay dangerous - depending on the element - from days to hundreds, thousands and even hundreds of thousands of years? That in these long time periods radioactive particles will not eventually move from the source of the accident to every corner of the earth?
The story of an extraordinary man illustrates both the science and the politics of nuclear power. Dr. John Gofman, from 1970 on, called for the closure of nuclear power plants.

The obituaries for him in 2007 quoted him as saying: “ Licensing a nuclear power plant is, in my view, licensing random premeditated murder. First of all, when you license a plant, you know what you are doing --- so it’s premeditated. Second, the evidence on radiation-producing cancer is beyond doubt. I’ve worked fifteen years on it, and so have many others.  It is not a question anymore: Radiation produces cancer, and the evidence is good all the way down to the lowest doses. The only way you could license nuclear power plants and not have murder is if you could guarantee perfect containment. But they admit that they are not going to contain it perfectly."

John Gofman studied under Glenn Seaborg at UC Berkeley and, in 1943, earned a Ph.D. in nuclear physical chemistry for his work on, and co-discovery of, Uranium 232 and 233. He finished Med. School in 1946 and became Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley. He made a number of major discoveries working with cholesterol, lipoproteins, coronary heart disease, arteriosclerosis, and cancer. Gofman was so widely acclaimed as scientist in both fields, nuclear chemistry and medicine, that he was asked to be part of two major projects at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab. His task was to evaluate the health effects of radiation and radionuclide release from weapons testing, nuclear war, radioactivity in medicine, nuclear power, etc.--all of the atomic energy programs. And he was given a three million dollar budget to start. His multiyear work in this field convinced him that nuclear power plants need to closed. His research was suppressed and he was forced to resign in 1973.

Gofman is the 1992 recipient of the Right Livelihood Award for his anti-nuclear work. He is often called the "father" of the antinuclear movement. Produced May 22, 2012.

From the beginning of the nuclear age, from the Manhattan Project to the bomb testing program to the development of nuclear reactors one aspect remained concealed, that is the emission and the effects of radiation on life. And it was not a question whether scientists, government agencies, including the Atomic Energy Commission, were ignorant about the danger and the effects. Freedom of information requests reveal the evidence that they knew and decided to keep it secret or downplay it. And one can easily argue that it remains one of the murderous secrets of our time as well. 

Fallout from the atom bombs exploded on the Nevada Test Site affected most seriously communities of Downwinders in Utah but were also recorded 2000 miles away on the East Coast. The author and investigative writer John G. Fuller unraveled the sequence of lies and deception towards the Downwinders of Utah in his book: The Day We Bombed Utah. In a pre-publication article in the May 1983 edition of Omni Magazine he previewed his most important points. Here are links I used in updating Fuller's story.

KENT STATE REVISITED

The killing of four students on the campus of Kent State, Ohio, on May 4, 1970, during a demonstration against Nixon's expansion of the Vietnam War into Cambodia received new attention on April 23, 2012. The Obama administration's Justice Department decided not to re-open the case in spite of evidence that the guardsmen had been ordered to shoot. This reminded the public that the question of who ordered the shooting has never been resolved.

He spoke freely from the heart with humor, deep conviction and wisdom, honoring many unsung heroes who influenced his life in vivid anecdotes. From his childhood to Salt Lake City to the Korean war, his life as a Hobo, his work with transients and migrants, his discovery of anarchism and pacifism and how to use music as a weapon, this is a moving, honest account of an extraordinary life.

Utah Phillips died on May 23, 2008 in Nevada City. His passing generated a flood of letters and news stories from across the country. You can see why he is remembered with such admiration and love. Recorded by Maria Gilardin.

Parenti is one of the nation’s leading progressive political analysts. After receiving his Ph.D. in political science from Yale Parenti has taught at colleges and universities, in the United States and abroad. He wrote 23 books, among them: Democracy for the Few, Superpatriotism, History as Mystery, Against Empire and God and His Demons. He risked and ended his promising academic career when he openly opposed the war on Vietnam.

Parenti has written about empire, history, the media, theology, and socialism in his decades as an activist and teacher. However one topic has intrigued him more than others. He once wrote that "Imperialism has been the most powerful force in world history over the last five centuries, carving up whole continents, oppressing indigenous peoples and obliterating entire civilizations. Marilyn Waring
SEX, LIES AND GLOBAL ECONOMICS
- a classic from the film on radio archives of TUC Radio
 The gross domestic product, the GDP, allegedly is an indicator of the well being of a society. Since powerful forces in banking and public policy are driving attempts to increase growth to solve the financial crisis it is important to listen to the critics of growth.

The GDP formula was invented by John Maynard Keynes who wrote a pamphlet during World War II entitled: The British National Income and How to Pay for the War. In 1953 that Keynesian set of rules was imposed on everybody.  The rules are called The United Nations System of National Accounts. All countries must use them or they will not be allowed to be a member of the UN, or deal with the World Bank and IMF. These unquestioned rules have been used to make public policy for the last 56 years.

Marilyn Waring says that the GDP system counts only cash transactions in the market. In other words it recognizes no value other than money. This means there is no value to peace to the preservation of the environment, and no value to unpaid work. This system leaves out half the population of the planet and the planet itself.

Marilyn Waring's work and intriguing life is described in a documentary film by Terre Nash. I'm bringing back the soundtrack of this film to support a debate on changing the current National Income Accounting using the GDP.

Dr. Riffat Hassan, born in Pakistan and educated in England, taught theology in the US. Her feminist friends in Pakistan realized that they needed a theological argument to oppose anti woman legislation and asked her to help. She became, in the mid 1980s, the first trained theologian to take on, at personal risk, the misreading of the Koran with the explicit goal to help women's liberation.

Recorded on April 1, 1993, at UC Berkeley, this is a two part program that begins with an moving account of her personal journey and ends with a painstakingly researched account of the story of Adam and Eve common to Islam, Christianity and Judaism. This myth has been used to declare women secondary, subservient to men, and sinful. As it turns out this is not the original story.

MONSANTO VS. PERCY SCHMEISER
Report on the lawsuit that challenges the ownership of life by corporations (Update Feb. 2012)
Percy Schmeiser and Ignacio Chapela
Monsanto, the giant multinational agro-chemical company, sued Percy Schmeiser over the presence of their patented canola that had invaded the edges of Schmeiser's field from a neighbor's plot. The Schmeiser case has become one of the most watched and most important cases for organic farmers, seed savers, for the movement against the invasion of the biosphere by genetically modified plants, and against corporate ownership of life.

Schmeiser was recorded in Ukiah, CA, in November 2006. He gave a report of his multi-year legal battle to save his land and home, and his 50 year legacy as plant breeder from being seized by Monsanto over 12 pounds of invading seeds. After two shattering losses in court he finally won a partial victory in the Canadian Supreme Court. However the court upheld Monsanto's patent rights - even when their genetically modified canola invades another field or cross pollinates with organic or pedigree canola or even their relatives. Any invaded organism becomes the property of Monsanto as well. Under globalization the patent rights may apply to the US as well.

Percy Schmeiser is a Canadian farmer from Bruno, Saskatchewan. He took over the family farm in 1947. He and his wife are known on the Prairies as seed savers. Over 50 years they developed a canola seed that was resistant to disease and lost their life's work by contamination from genetically modified canola. <http://www.percyschmeiser.com>

He is joined by UC Berkeley microbiologist Ignacio Chapela who asks: Can genetically engineered plants and animals not only make us sick when we eat them but can there be a horizontal gene transfer between their genes and other life - including ours - since all genes are related. Are we modifying the human DNA as we modify the related DNA of plants and animals? Chapela teaches at UC Berkeley. In October 2000 he discovered the contamination of Mexican corn with Monsanto GMO corn.

FAMILY FARMERS VS MONSANTO

Monsanto appeared in Federal District Court in Manhattan on January 31st, 2012, to have a suit dismissed that was filed by organic growers.  At stake is: Can Monsanto sue farmers whose land was contaminated by pollen or seed from genetically modified plantings by their neighbors? The answer is that Monsanto has asserted their patent rights over those whose land was polluted by GMOs and continues to do so. Monsanto has to date filed 144 lawsuits against farmers in at least 27 different states for alleged infringement of its transgenic seed patents, while settling another 700 out of court.

Dan Ravicher, the attorney for the Organic Seed Growers & Trade Association and others, representing over 300,000 individuals, gave this summary of the landmark suit to stop these law suits at the Heirloom Seed Expo in Santa Rosa, CA, on September 14, 2011. As of February 2012 this suit hangs in the balance. Will the District Court Judge follow Monsanto's demand and declare the issue without merit, or will the suit go forward with consequences for the right to pure food and the survival of organic food production in the US.

On February 24, Judge Naomi Buchwald handed down her ruling on a motion to dismiss in the case of Organic Seed Growers and Trade Assn et al v. Monsanto after hearing oral argument on January 31st in Federal District Court in Manhattan. Her ruling to dismiss the case brought against Monsanto on behalf of organic farmers, seed growers and agricultural organizations representing farmers and citizens was met with great disappointment by the plaintiffs. CIVIL RIGHTS ATTORNEY FOR ROSA PARKS AND MARTIN LUTHER KING
This is a rare recording of a man who remained in the background.
Without him the civil rights movement might have taken a different turn.
When Fred Gray's friend Rosa Parks was arrested in 1955 for violating the segregated seating ordinance on a Montgomery bus, 26-year-old Martin Luther King, was chosen to lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and 24-year-old Fred Gray became his--and the movement's--lawyer. Gray's legal victory in the federal courts ended the boycott 381 days later.

In this program Fred Gray tells his story. He grew up in Montgomery, Alabama, and had to leave the state to finish his education because blacks could not then attend Alabama law schools. He returned to his hometown in 1954 and became one of two black lawyers in the city. His first case was that of the 15 year old Claudette Colvin. Nine months before Rosa Parks refused to relinquish her seat on the Montgomery bus, Claudette did the same. Fred Gray won scores of civil rights cases in education, voting rights, transportation, and health. He represented the Freedom Riders, the Selma-to-Montgomery marchers, and the victims of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study.

Recorded at the Republican Roundtable in San Francisco, July 2009.  It was a Republican, Peter Buxtun, who blew the whistle on the Tuskegee study. Poor black sharecroppers were led to believe they were being treated, while in reality the study recorded the progression of untreated Syphilis. Buxtun is now the events coordinator for the Republican Roundtable,  TUC Radio was there by invitation.

Michael Parenti
THE PATHOLOGY OF WEALTH
The first talk of 2012 by the social critic and noted author Michael Parenti fit perfectly into the debates of the time, that of the One versus the 99% and the finally no longer taboo question: What exactly is CAPITALISM? Parenti is debunking some of the myths of capitalism: That it creates jobs, peace, democracy and wealth - and more. In Part TWO Parenti describes the pathologies of capitalism by its inability to respond to climate change. Quoting a businessman in a New Yorker cartoon he reads: "While the end of the world scenario will be rife with unimaginable horrors, ..the pre-end period will be filled with unprecedented opportunities." Also in this segment arguments for the benefits of socialism in areas of our lives that should not be managed under the profit system. He lists health care, energy, and transportation.

Michael Parenti spoke on January 6, 2012, at the La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley, CA. He is one of the nation’s leading progressive political analysts. Raised in a working class district of New York City, Parenti went on to earn a Ph.D. from Yale and lost his chance at an academic career when he openly opposed the war on Vietnam.

Richard Grossman
WHEN INJUSTICE IS LEGAL
WHAT DO THE ABOLITIONISTS TEACH US ABOUT CHALLENGING CORPORATE RULE
This program is in remembrance of Richard Grossman, who died of cancer in November 2011. He was one of the great uncompromising, courageous thinkers and activists in the unfolding project to define, limit and abolish corporate power. Ralph Nader called Grossman "the preeminent historian of corporations" and this speech, that Grossman gave at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, in November 2006, shows what that meant. Grossman refers to the radical branch of the Abolitionists who confirmed that we are born with inalienable rights that precede the formation of governments, rights that governments are tasked to protect. As with the Abolitionists in the 1800-reds who determined that slaves could not be free under the existing constitution, anti corporate campaigner also need to re-write the constitution to dismantle the corporate state.

Grossman describes how corporations usurped many of the rights that are properly due to human beings and have become the dominant institutions or our time – and how that dominance needs to be challenged in the constitutional arena. He proposes how to bring about the changes in self-governance, be it energy, agriculture, transportation, peace or environmental protection by directly challenging the law.

Alex Carey: Corporations and Propaganda
The Attack on Democracy
The 20th century, said Carey, is marked by three historic developments: the growth of democracy via the expansion of the franchise, the growth of corporations, and the growth of propaganda to protect corporations from democracy. Carey wrote that the people of the US have been subjected to an unparalleled, expensive, 3/4 century long propaganda effort designed to expand corporate rights by undermining democracy and destroying the unions. And, in his manuscript, unpublished during his life time, he described that history, going back to World War I and ending with the Reagan era. Carey covers the little known role of the US Chamber of Commerce in the McCarthy witch hunts of post WWII and shows how the continued campaign against "Big Government" plays an important role in bringing Reagan to power.

John Pilger called Carey  "a second Orwell", Noam Chomsky dedicated his book, Manufacturing Consent, to him. And even though TUC Radio runs our documentary based on Carey's manuscript at least every two years and draws a huge response each time, Alex Carey is still unknown.

Given today's spotlight on corporations that may change. It is not only the Occupy movement that inspired me to present this program again at this time. By an amazing historic coincidence Bill Moyers and Charlie Cray of Greenpeace have just added the missing chapter to Carey's analysis. Carey's manuscript ends in 1988 when he committed suicide. Moyers and Cray begin with 1971 and bring the corporate propaganda project up to date.

This is a fairly complex production with many voices, historic sound clips, and source material. The program has been used by writers and students of history and propaganda. Alex Carey: Taking the Risk out of Democracy, Corporate Propaganda VS Freedom and Liberty with a foreword by Noam Chomsky was published by the University of Illinois Press in 1995.

Bill Moyers: Politics Today is Money Laundering
Keynote for Public Citizen
Moyers says: "Politics Today is Money Laundering and the Trafficking of Power and Policy" - and "why New York’s Zuccotti Park is occupied is no mystery.  Reporters keep scratching their heads and asking: Why are you here? But it’s as clear as the crash of 2008: they are occupying Wall Street because Wall Street has occupied America."

Part TWO is a reading of Moyers' concise and revealing mini history of the corporate takeover of America's democracy, beginning with the infamous secret 1971 memo by Lewis Powell to his friends at the U. S. Chamber of Commerce. Powell soon became Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Moyers sums it up: "We look back on it now as a call to arms for class war waged from the top down... Within two years the board of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce formed a task force of 40 business executives. Their assignment was to defend the free enterprise system and push the corporate agenda. In 1971, only 175 firms had registered lobbyists in the capital; by 1982, nearly twenty-five hundred did. Corporate PACs increased from under 300 in 1976 to over twelve hundred by the middle of the l980s. Powell had set in motion a revolt of the rich." (Moyers omitted this very important section due to time constraints.)

Bill Moyers, elder, intellectual, journalist and public broadcaster for four decades has known politics more intimately than most of his media colleagues. He was an organizing founder and deputy director of the Peace Corps, Special Assistant and then Press Secretary to President Lyndon Johnson and played a key role in organizing and supervising the 1964 Great Society legislative task forces.

Bill Moyers delivered the keynote address at Public Citizen's 40th Anniversary celebration in October 2011. Public Citizen was co-founded by Ralph Nader, and now has over 225,000 members. Their motto is "defending democracy, resisting corporate power"

Natural Process Farming
Bob Cannard
In the description of the Bioneers he is: "Iconoclast, piano player, great cook, and an incredible farmer". Bob Cannard is a frequent guest at their annual conferences. His produce and fruit are so exquisite that they are used in the most expensive restaurants, including Chez Panisse in Berkeley. His farm store is open year round and sells vegetables and home-canned goods at affordable prices.

As the cities are taking over the land Cannard is taking back what he can. He is acknowledged by Michael Pollan as one of the important members of the sustainable food movement, creating solutions to the growing crisis of the loss of farmland - caused by urbanization and the techniques of industrial agriculture.

After explaining how to have fun restoring a compacted weedy piece of land or lawn, how to use biochar and more, Cannard proposes to build the Garden Party and lays out the principles of taking responsibility for one's food on a personal and local level to a cheering audience. Those are the criteria for membership in the Garden Party.

Architects and engineers are joined by 9/11 family members and first responders who are joining that demand. Remembering Doris "Granny D." Haddock
- and her fight to get money out of politics

At a time when the 2010 midterm elections set a record for campaign spending; and a new populism is on the rise that contains elements of anger and racism it's good to remember Doris "Granny D." Haddock the amazing, eloquent, funny grandmother who gave the last 15 years of her life to getting money out of politics and to embody a populism that is fueled by love, compassion and a bright, clear sense of justice.

Granny D. was best known for walking, in her 90th year, from Los Angeles to Washington DC to tell those she met along the way that there is a way to restore democracy by removing the privilege of money. Among the many proposals for campaign finance reform that she pursued, one national piece of legislation was then under debate, the McCain Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Act - and she is widely credited for galvanizing the public support that helped pass that Act in 2002.

She had worked on campaign finance reform on the state level before her walk and she continued to do so when she returned home in March 2000. For another decade she did vigils, was arrested, met with over half the Senators and about 100 House members. She walked 300 miles across Missouri with the Alliance for Democracy and founded a group that pushed the New Hampshire state legislature to create the Citizen Funded Election Task Force.

Granny D. died March 9, 2010, at the age of 100. Just before her death, which came very suddenly, she had jokingly discussed with her friends and supporters what it would be like to walk across the country again to call attention to the Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. In a 5-4 decision, the Court ruled corporations are persons and have First Amendment rights and that the government cannot impose restrictions on their political speech. That decision cleared the way for corporations and other special interest groups to spend record amounts of money to buy Congress and elections.

Granny D. left behind a treasure of writings, recorded speeches, and an inspiring diary of her 1999/2000 walk across America - some of which you will be able to enjoy in this double program. The late journalist Molly Ivens said about her: Granny D, gives you "the strength, courage and optimism to keep fighting for change."

THE JFK ASSASSINATION AND THE GANGSTER NATURE OF THE STATE
When Oliver Stone’s movie JFK opened in December 1991 a huge PR campaign was mobilized against the film. Even progressives spoke out. Noam Chomsky wrote in support of the Warren Commission's findings – in contrast Michael Parenti gave one of his highly acclaimed talks criticizing the lone assassin theory. The bitter questions that haunted defenders and critics alike was whether government agencies of a democratic country would do such a thing as assassinate an elected President.

In this talk Michael Parenti turns to that question first – he examines, in part one, what he calls “the gangster nature of the state.” In part two he goes over details of the assassination and critiques The Nation, The Progressive, Chomsky and Cockburn. He spoke in Berkeley, CA, on the 30th anniversary of the JFK assassination.

This is one of many "standing ovations" talks by Parenti. The master for this program was lost and this appears to be the only copy of the original recording.

INTO ETERNITY

This is a conversation between Helen Caldicott and Michael Madsen whose film, Into Eternity, premiered in the US in February 2011. Helen called Madsen "One of the more extraordinary people I've ever interviewed". This is a thought provoking exchange between the veteran campaigner, Helen Caldicott, who dedicated her life to alerting us to the nuclear danger, and the young Danish artist. He introduces thoughts about civilization, language, danger and eternity.

Into Eternity is a documentary about the building of the world's first permanent repository for nuclear waste in Finland. It shows not only the construction under way that will take 140 years, but introduces the people involved, the scientists, regulators and corporate executives who oversee this project. None of them will be alive when Onkalo, as the repository is called, will be finished in 2120; and they must expect this repository to remain intact and untouched by future humans for at least 100,000 years. Such is the danger and longevity of waste from nuclear power plants.

How long does radiation from nuclear fuel remain dangerous to life? At least 100,000 years. At Fukushima that fuel lies littered under the ruins of the exploded buildings. Buddhist scholar Joanna Macy and Natalia Manzurova, who worked at Chernobyl after the accident, talk about nuclear eternity.

Natalia Manzurova is a Russian radiation ecology expert. For almost five years she worked in a lab in the abandoned town of Pripyat two miles from Chernobyl. She was an engineer at another nuclear facility in Russia and was ordered to the site of the accident. She saw several of her colleagues die and is ill herself.

A founder of Chernobyl Union, a support group for liquidators, Natalia Manzurova currently works with Planet of Hope, advocating for people exposed to radiation, such as downwinders, people living in radiation areas, and nuclear workers; a large and growing category of victims of the nuclear age.

She spoke in Berkeley on April 10, 2011. The Center for Safe Energy <http://www.centerforsafeenergy.org/>, that organized the event, had asked Joanna Macy, longtime anti nuclear activist and author of books such as: "Pass It On: Five Stories that Can Change the World" to give an introduction. Cosponsors of the event were Plutonium-Free Future, Tri-Valley CARES, and the Social Justice Committee of the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists.
 

Onkalo - Into Eternity
Onkalo is the first permanent storage for waste from nuclear power plants in Finland. Blasted into bedrock of the island of Olkiluoto on the shores of the Baltic Sea, it has to remain secure for 100,000 years.

Danish filmmaker Michael Madsen's documentary of the building in progress of Onkalo is a meditation on eternity, insanity and the impossibility of projecting anything 100,000 into the future. The film also proves eloquently and with expert statements the terrible danger that arises from so-called "spent" nuclear fuel and makes us see Fukushima with very different eyes.

This is a talk about the trillion dollar bailout of the too large to fail banks and how it relates to the underlying crisis caused by the private control of the US - and soon the world's - money supply. Brown has an intriguing theory that she sets out to prove: Congress was initially not very interested in a bailout of the banks and needed to be shown, she says, that the situation was serious and that more money than ever before had to flow from taxpayers and the Federal Reserve into the banking system. In part ONE of her talk Ellen Brown runs down the incidents that led to the collapse of Lehman Brothers. She asks whether Lehman was purposefully bombed with short and naked short sales, and then was left unsupported by fellow banks in order to prove to Congress and to us that the crisis was serious. She quotes from a NY Times headline: "Lehman had to die, it seems, so global finance could live."

In the spring of 2009, South African judge Richard Goldstone set out on a mission to the Gaza Strip on assignment from the United Nations Human Rights Council to investigate possible war crimes committed during "Operation Cast Lead," Israel's invasion of Gaza a few months earlier. Many other reports on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict had come and gone, but the account Goldstone's mission produced ... became the report heard around the world. It is one of the most controversial and historic documents published in the century-long conflict in Israel and Palestine.

Horowitz and Weiss of the influential blog Mondoweiss, with Lizzy Ratner, produced a readable version of the voluminous Goldstone report and included luminaries, such as Bishop Desmond Tutu and Canadian writer Naomi Klein. This is a recording of the appearance of Horowitz and Weiss at the First Congregational Church in Oakland, CA, on June 5, 2011. Introduction by UC Hastings law professor George Bisharat. Iain Boal: THE BEGINNING OF THE NUCLEAR AGE

Part ONE:
Did the nuclear age begin at Alamogordo, in Hiroshima, or with Fermi's experiment? Fermi set off the first nuclear chain reaction in the middle of Chicago in 1942, risking a first China Syndrome. With the help of a Chicago street gang he built an unshielded graphite pile with uranium pellets and control rods tacked to a two by four. His experiment led to the building of the plutonium bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki. Iain Boal is a historian of technology and author of Resisting the Virtual Life (City Lights Books) and The Green Machine, a history of the bicycle, just out by Notting Hill Editions, 2011.
 

Part TWO:
Enrico Fermi's experiment, setting off the first nuclear chain reaction, provided the blueprint for the plutonium bomb. In his commemoration of this little known event that changed the world, the historian of technology, Iain Boal, describes the mindset of the early nuclear scientists who began releasing the most long lived toxic substances on earth. He also sketches the beginning of  resistance to nuclear weapons in SDS and CND.

TO THE MEMORY OF CHERNOBYL

SUMMARY Part ONE
Instead of honoring its victims at this time Chernobyl is referenced to minimize the impact of Fukuchima.
Supposedly only 35 people died. The World Health Organization and the IAEA, whose mission is to promote nuclear power, claim that "there is no scientific evidence of increases in overall cancer incidence or mortality rates or in rates of non-malignant disorders that could be related to radiation exposure from Chernobyl."
That the reality on the ground is very different comes to life in a book, Chernobyl: Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment.
 

SUMMARY Part TWO
The extensive section on health effects in this book offers a whole new view of the consequences of radiation induced disease. Yes, there are cancers to specific organs, many thyroid cancers caused by Iodine 131 and 129 but there are also diseases that affect body systems such as the whole endocrine system, not just the thyroid, or the immune system, the respiratory and the reproductive systems. - Also a brief explanation of "half life" "hot spots" and why background radiation is different from radiation from nuclear processes.
 

SUMMARY Part THREE
This program presents the consequences of the Chernobyl explosion on the environment. How has the radiation affected - and continues to affect air, water, the soil, plants and animals. How does radiation move, disperse, bio-accumulate and enter the food chain. Specific examples are from studies on rivers and lakes, wild and domestic animals, birds, fish, fungi, bacteria, viruses, studies that show that they were all affected, in varying degrees, but without exception.
 

SUMMARY Part FOUR
Today's last of four program presents important information on the plight of the children of Chernobyl who - to this day - need vacations in uncontaminated areas to detoxify their bodies from some of the embedded radioactive substances that they absorb in every day life, substances such as cesium, cobalt, thorium, plutonium etc. Also explained is the danger of contaminated food, and how to set up ongoing projects, under control of local communities, to deal with the persisting radiation and find methods to measure the burden of internal radiation.
 

PROGRAM NOTES:
Chernobyl: Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment, was compiled by Alexey Yablokov, member of the Russian Academy of Science, and Vassily Nesterenko, former director of the Belorussian Nuclear Center. Yablokov and Nesterenko wrote a synopsis of the over 1,000 titles and more than 5,000 printed and internet publications that reflect the impact of radiation not just on the health of human beings but on the whole ecosystem. They compiled research on rivers and lakes, the soils and the grains and vegetables growing there, wild and domestic animals, birds, fish, fungi, bacteria, viruses, trees, mushrooms, and berries,  - a literature that shows that they were all affected, in varying degrees, but without exception.

It is an extraordinary and auspicious coincidence that the book becomes freely available at a time where the world is trying to make sense of Fukushima. The similarities are uncanny, the experience gained and described is potentially life saving. Even the chapter on mitigation, how to treat exposed persons, how to remediate soils that are contaminated, how to get ready to live with contaminations that will persist, can be helpful.

Chernobyl: Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment was first published in 2009 in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences  -  and promptly ignored. After an original print run of only 700 copies the report is no longer available from the Academy. However, the authors and editor are now (April 2011) offering the book for free as pdf file - and they are placing a new print run back into circulation.

Drey is former board member of Beyond Nuclear and the Nuclear Information & Resource Service. Now retired, she has worked for 30 years as an advocate for the protection of the general public, workers and the environment from the hazards of nuclear power and radioactive waste.

He is Interim General Manager of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Water System since October 6, 2009, overseeing the largest municipal utility in the country. Freeman oversaw and managed the Port of Los Angeles where he led the boards of the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to adopt the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action plan, a comprehensive strategy to reduce port air emissions by nearly 50 percent over a period of five years. He has a five-decade career in both the electric and water utilities. He served in Chief Executive positions at the largest power authorities in the world, including the New York Power Authority, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the Lower Colorado River Authority, and General Manager of the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District (SMUD).

An engineer and lawyer, Freeman has served in high-level government positions, including adviser to President Carter. He is the Chairman of the Board of the Hydrogen Car Company (HCC).

This is a medical lecture on the health effects of uranium mining, processing, radiation damage to cells and genes and the routine releases of radioactive materials such as Tritium from nuclear power plants during "normal" operations.

When Obama in his 2010 State of the Union address strongly endorsed nuclear power as one of the solutions to global warming - and said: "That means building a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants in this country" the anti nuclear campaigner Helen Caldicott responded in the Huffington Post. Throughout her almost 40 year long international campaign and her writings in seven books she has always made the connection between nuclear weapons, nuclear power, and environmental destruction. She said that not only should no new nuclear power plants be built but called for: ending "the sale of nuclear reactors globally by the US, Russia, France and others for they are fundamentally factories for nuclear weapons production because they manufacture plutonium..". Ultimately - she said - "the goal should be the cessation of the production of enriched uranium and plutonium by closing all nuclear power plant operations."

THE MYTH OF THE FOUNDING FATHERS
As the United States government claims to spread democracy around the world and is deeply involved in ghost writing constitutions for other countries, the spotlight falls back on this country. Is the current US system a democracy, - has it ever been one? In The Myth of the Founding Fathers Michael Parenti takes us back to the early days of the republic. Who were the founding fathers, what were their goals in writing the US constitution? Who did they exclude and who did they favor? What was their attitude towards slavery? How many of them actually wanted to create a monarchy? And who – in the end – ratified the constitution after it was written?

Michael Parenti is among our leading progressive political analysts. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Yale University in 1962 and has taught at colleges in the US and abroad. The focus of his lectures is American democracy, US foreign policy, and the invented reality of the media.

THE SPANISH AMERICAN WAR AND THE RISE OF US IMPERIALISM
US foreign policy of our time is clearly interventionist. From the 1950s to today, from Korea, Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan and countless smaller wars in between the country has moved away from the sentiment once expressed by George Washington: “Beware of foreign entanglements“

When did all this begin? Michael Parenti uses the history of the Spanish American War to answer several very intriguing questions. Who first expressed the desire to annex the island of Cuba – and when? The early African American emancipation movement inside the US was critical of US plans to attack Cuba. Why, their leaders asked, was the US government concerned about Spanish repression of the rights of Cubans while the repression of African Americans within the US was ignored. Some said the Negro needs freedom just as much as the Cubans. Why did the US attack the Philippines when it was Cuba that they wanted to take over? Why did the US give verbal support to the Cuban liberation movements against Spain while selling weapons to Spain to fight the poplar movement? The Spanish American War was an important turning point in the transition of the US to an imperial power and many of the forces at work are eerily contemporary.

Part three/six
THE FUNCTIONS OF FASCISM
Parenti says that fascism is a new order and consciousness that served the same old power structure and promised to solve the ills of the many while protecting the interests of the few. He answers in detail who financed the Fascist parties and what services the fascists rendered in return. Many of the measures enacted by fascists were frighteningly similar to those enacted today: They include the privatization of state owned enterprises, reduction of corporate taxes and inheritance taxes, defeat of unions, and the suspension of civil liberties.

THE REAL CAUSES OF WORLD WAR II
Who inside Germany was resisting the rise of Hitler and why were they not supported by Britain and France? Why did the Western Allies allow Hitler to take over Austria and Czechoslovakia? Why did Britain and France refuse to enter an anti fascist alliance with the Soviet Union? Why did Britain and France do nothing while Hitler conquered Denmark and Norway even though they had finally already declared war against Germany in 1939. The West, says Parenti, saw Hitler as a bulwark against communism and the Soviet Union and were hoping that the two countries would bleed each other white.

PSYCHO-HISTORY
A considerable number of historians, political scientists and psychologists have begun to rely on psychology to explain political phenomena. They treat individuals as driven by covert, personal emotions, distorting our understanding of political life. Using the examples of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin and US President Herbert Hoover Parenti proves what is wrong with that analysis.

Vladimir Ilyich Lenin's opposition to the absolute monarch of Russia, the Tsar, psycho historians say, came out of Lenin's unresolved issues with parental authority. When Herbert Hoover, after administering food aid for Belgium and Central Europe denied it to the hungry at home during the depression, psycho historians characterized him as an active-negative president due to his very bad childhood. Parenti writes that in spite of his bad childhood Hoover had become a multi-millionaire and stood firmly with his fellow millionaires. He opposed jobless benefits and public assistance as creeping socialism while giving tax breaks to corporation. Parenti present a very different and intriguing explanation for the actions of Lenin and Hoover.
 

Part six/six
BURNING OF BOOKS
The burning of books creates a powerful symbol, to this day people kill and die over such an action. In this reading from Michael Parenti's History as Mystery a book burning story is told that is deeper, and maintained for centuries longer than any of these efforts before or after. Parenti discloses who the biggest purveyor of book burnings of the last two millennia was and how the real perpetrators and academics tried to shift the blame.

When Parenti's book History as Mystery was published by City Lights in San Francisco Daniel Ellsberg, who made history by disclosing the Pentagon papers and the real causes of the war on Vietnam, wrote: Michael Parenti unveils the falsified history, from the early Christian church to the present, a fascinating, darkly revelatory tale. History as Mystery contains many more intriguing chapters from the Inquisition and Joan of Arc to the way present day text books distort labor history.

Collectively the 400 richest Americans have accumulated $1.27 trillion in wealth.

THREE: While taxpayers bailed out Wall Street banks because they were too big to fail, 3 out of 4 financial institutions that were bailed out are now larger than before. Wells Fargo is 43% bigger, JP Morgan Chase 51% bigger, and Bank of America is 138% bigger. If we are serious about preventing a future collapse worse than the current one we have to break these banks up, says Sanders.

FOUR: After devoting time to the $13.7 trillion national debt and our deficit which is $1.4 trillion, Sanders turns to our trade deficit. He says: In 2008 the trade deficit was nearly 700 billion - last year our deficit with China alone was almost 227 billion - we urgently need trade reform.

Vermont's independent Senator Bernie Sanders' 8 1/2 hour filibuster speech in protest of the Bill that - among other gifts - extended tax breaks to the richest Americans, crashed the Senate servers. Bars and Pizza parlors carried his speech live. He began speaking on the morning of Friday, December 10 and did not eat or sit down until 7 pm. He gave one of those speeches many wished Pres. Obama was capable of giving.

Even though - or really because the bill did pass both houses a few days later - Sanders' words must be remembered. This bill, ironically called: Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 is an attack on social security and a blueprint for even larger gifts and tax relief to corporation and the richest of the rich.
The speech is also filled with fascinating details of the ongoing work by Bernie Sanders and a few colleagues. Sanders had led a fight against the powerful U.S. Federal Reserve and won, forcing the central bank to disclose more details than ever on its rescue actions during the financial crisis.

Parenti rarely talks about his life. How does a NYC street kid get accepted to Yale? Hoe does he lose the privilege of his PhD. in an arrest at a demonstration against the war on Vietnam, and become an internationally acclaimed author and lecturer?

Michael Parenti grew up in a poor, working class Italian community in New York City. When he received his PhD in political science from Yale in 1962 he was the success and pride of his family. He risked and ended his academic career when he openly opposed the war on Vietnam. Ultimately the choice he made then was a good one. He now is an independent political writer and thinker and author of over 20 books. Invitations to speak come from all over North America. His topics are history, fascism, US Imperialism, globalization and terrorism. His writings have been translated into more than a dozen languages.

Independent researchers say that  radiation emitted by cell phones and cell towers has been linked to DNA damage, cancer, immunological impairment, neurological diseases, reduced fertility and impacts on neurological function. The radiation is also harming animals and nature, and is as much an environmental as human health issue.

Federal law, the Telecommunications Act of 1996, denies local communities the right to challenge cell tower sitings on health and environmental grounds. There is no government agency that studies the impact of an ever increasing electronic smog emitted by cell towers, cell phones, wifi's, smart meters and new wireless electronic devices unheard of only last year. Most of us are now exposed to one or more of these emitter 24/7, even those who do not own or operate any of of them.

At the end of November 2010 a conference was held on The Health Effects of Electromagnetic Fields in the prestigious Commonwealth Club of San Francisco. Physicians, grassroots campaigners, and scientists from many countries had come together to address this urgent issue.

Part ONE
Eileen O'Connor, UK, was diagnosed with breast cancer when she discovered that she was living in a cancer cluster. Her village was dominated by a cell tower placed there in 1994. In 2003 the villagers forcefully removed the phone mast and prevented it from being put back up. Eileen is the director of the Radiation Research Trust.

Olle Johansson is Associate Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, and Professor, The Royal Institute of Technology. Dr. Johannson is a leading world authority in the field of EMF radiation and health effects. He has published more than 500 original articles, reviews, book chapters and conference reports within the field of neuroscience.

Part TWO
Dr. Joel Moskowitz is Director of the Center for Family and Community Health, at the School of Public Health, at the University of California, Berkeley. This Research Center is one of 37 Prevention Research Centers supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Johnson said that the U.S. is on the verge of internal collapse, due in large part to the vast expenditures required to maintain its ever-expanding empire.  Nothing is more dangerous to democracy than military expansion and war. He said "The political system of the United States, history tells us, is one of the most unstable combination there is - that is domestic democracy and foreign empire - the choices are stark. A nation can be one or the other, a democracy or an imperialist, but it can't be both."

Chalmers Johnson is the acclaimed author of Blowback and The Sorrows of Empire. He is a former analyst for the CIA and professor emeritus of the University of California San Diego. England's most famous reporter for the Middle East, Robert Fisk, made his annual trip to Berkeley, CA, to speak at a benefit for MECA, the
Middle East Childrens Alliance. He is an acclaimed author and Middle East correspondent for the London Independent. This time he had asked to be interviewed on stage by Hatem Bazian, the young Palestinian American lecturer at the University of CA Berkeley. Between Fisk and Bazian they filled the Berkeley Church to capacity.

Robert Fisk has lived in and reported on the Middle East since 1976. He says that every journalist in the Middle East needs to keep a history book in their pocket as reminder of why the injustices inflicted by the West on the Middle East are engraved in people’s minds and have a powerful influence on what happens next.

Hatem Bazian was born in Nablus in the West Bank, went to school in Amman, Jordan, and came to the US to attend San Francisco State University. He received his Ph.D. in Philosophy and Islamic Studies from UC Berkeley and is a well loved and politically engaged teacher.

Richard Heinberg
PEAK EVERYTHING
Richard Heinberg has influenced the work of those who are searching for a way out of today's interlocking crisis of climate, finance and resource depletion. I visited him in Sept. 2010 at a crucial moment. He had just written the new preface for his 2007 book Peak Everything, Waking Up to the Century of Declines. Analyzing the events of the past three years Heinberg writes in his update that the question of when we will reach the peak of the resources that we made ourselves dependent on has finally been answered - and the time is NOW. The economic crisis, he says, is not a dip from which we will recover. Humanity has achieved an unsustainable pinnacle of population size and consumption rates, and our species needs to learn right now to live within the resource limits of the Earth.

This interview brings up the intriguing history of the limits to growth movement, what other energy sources and raw material are close to peak, the need to reform the financial system and the growth imperative built into policy. Heinberg's work inspired the transition town movement - and he gives a brief survey of the recent successes.

Heinberg is the author of eight other books, including The Party’s Over, and Blackout, Coal, Climate, and the Last Energy Crisis. He is currently Senior Fellow-in-Residence at Post Carbon Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building more resilient, sustainable, and equitable communities. His appearance in the movies: The End of Suburbia and Leonardo  DiCaprio’s 11th Hour popularized and demystified the concept of peak oil and so many other diminishing resources.

Among their experiences: Gretna Sheriffs block the Greater New Orleans Bridge across the Mississippi and shoot when they and a large group of African Americans try to walk to safety. Later their temporary shelter is destroyed by police and their food and water taken away. When they finally get picked up they and thousands of others sit in a dirty cage at the New Orleans airport, again without food and water, forced to wait for the George W. Bush photo opportunity to end. As they arrive in San Antonio they are made to stand on a dark tarmac and are subjected to two dog sniffing ordeals. Julia Whitty
For Love and Protection of the Deep Ocean - on the impact of the BP oil spill
Julia Whitty is a diver, former nature documentary filmmaker, author and investigative journalist. As environmental correspondent for Mother Jones she had just returned from the Gulf Coast. She wrote: "BP and its partners reckless quest has endangered and perhaps condemned not just the Gulf Coast, but the largest, richest, most pristine, most biologically important, and last completely unprotected ecosystem left on Earth: the deep ocean."

Julia Whitty explains why the deep ocean is the foundation of life for the upper layer of the sunlit sea. Many whales, dolphins, seals, sea turtles, sharks, manta rays, and smaller predatory fish are nocturnal hunters, dependent on the movements of a vast community of organisms that live in the deep ocean. That community is known as the Deep Scattering Layer. And this Deep Scattering Layer that rises and falls with day and night and that is visited by the creatures of the sunlit sea is threatened by the invisible part of the gigantic out-pour that never came to the surface because it was hit by chemical dispersant and now made doubly invisible by the White House climate and energy adviser, Carol Browner, who claims that 75% of the oil has already disappeared.

But researchers and divers report on huge clouds of dispersed oil, and of dissolved natural gas and methane that remain below the surface and now move around the gulf. These toxic clouds are separating the creatures of the deep ocean from those in the twilight and sunlit zones. And wherever the clouds of oil and gas move in, the creatures from above and below have to travel through the poisonous brew twice in one day to survive.

The second part of the program has a more personal cast. After reading from her new book, Deep Blue Home, the amazing story of the encounter with an ancient iceberg while diving off Newfoundland, Whitty responds to a rich variety of questions about diving, close encounters with sea life, the invisible rivers that flow beneath the surface of the seas, coral reefs - and more.

FAMILY OF SECRETS
An interview with the author, Russ Baker
Gore Vidal called Baker's book about the Bush Dynasty and America's invisible government one of the most important books of the past ten years. In Family of Secrets Baker asks the obvious, but unanswered question, how can "such a clan occupy the presidency or vice presidency of the US for 20 of the past 28 years" with yet another Bush, Jeb Bush waiting in the wings. Family of Secrets reads and was conceived as a detective story, based on more than 500 interviews and thousands of documents, backed up by more than a 1000 footnotes. And even though the book uncovers a secret political life for all Bushes it is much more than a family expose. In this interview Russ Baker describes the powers behind the scenes, with examples from the CIA, oil and banking, and how these institutions are created by, and make use of people like the Bush family.

GASLAND
Resistance to drilling in the Marcellus Shale
Six weeks into the BP oil disaster President Obama said we need to move to natural gas as a clean fuel alternative. Material from the trailer to the movie GASLAND and voices from DamascusCitizens.org call that into question. They say that chemicals used in the process of hydraulic fracturing and set free in drilling have poisoned water and air. A grassroots movement is resisting the encroachment of gas drilling into Pennsylvania and upstate New York. 

They encounter two problems: The fossil fuel industry was exempted from the clean air and safe drinking water act under the Bush administration, and corporations do not need to disclose what chemicals they use. Test results from drinking water in people's homes and from spills and sediment in evaporation ponds at drill sites have now identified 247 out of over 300 chemicals and they include carcinogens, mutagens, and neurotoxins.

Josh Fox, for his movie GASLAND, reports from 24 states on the impacts of chemical hydraulic fracturing. He uncovered water that can be lit on fire right out of the tap, talks to chronically ill residents of drilling areas from many different locations in the US, describes pools of toxic waste that kill cattle and vegetation, and well blowouts and gas explosions.

Natural Gas, in the eyes of oil service corporations such as Halliburton, and the stock market, is in it's tenth year of an unprecedented boom. The US, they say, is the Saudi Arabia of natural gas with 450,000 gas wells already operating in over 32 states and aggressively expanding. This program tries to capture some of the imagination and determination of the local people in this David and Goliath confrontation.

Richard Heinberg, author of The Party is Over said about Ruppert's most recent book: Confronting Collapse: "Ruppert has an unblemished track record for saying things that are incendiary, outrageous, shocking - and true. Our new president needs desperately to hear the uncomfortable message of this book about energy and the economy, and so do the rest of us."

In the first part of the radio version of Collapse I focus on Ruppert's line of arguments around Peak Oil. There are several respected researchers who also argue that we have reached Peak, the halfway point between the discovery and the end of oil where oil companies take greater and greater risks to tap the last remaining oil fields - as the disastrous British Petroleum spill in the Gulf of Mexico shows. In part two Ruppert addresses the collapse of the fuel based agriculture and of the financial system.

Frances Moore Lappé
GETTING A GRIP
Barbara Kingsolver says of Frances Moore Lappé's most recent book: Getting a Grip, “This is not an ordinary book; it’s more like a new pair of glasses, allowing you to see everything around you with greater clarity. Suddenly the world is more comprehensible, even more beautiful."

Frances Moore Lappé is the author of 18 books including the three-million copy Diet for a Small Planet. Diet for a Small Planet was the first book to expose the enormous waste built into U.S. grain-fed meat production. For Frances that was a powerful symbol of a global food system that is creating hunger out of plenty. Eating a planet-centered diet, she argued, means choosing what is best for the earth and our bodies—a daily action that reminds us of our power to create a saner world.

France Moore Lappé asks several important questions: how can we make sense of the fact that we are creating a world that none of us individually would chose and - what are the causal forces that produce this needless suffering. She lays out how we can draw on the resources that lie dormant in every human being. Neuroscience, she says, affirms that human beings are predisposed or "softwired," for empathy, cooperation, fairness, and the desire to have power, to be imaginative and to create.

Peter Dale Scott on Thomas Merton
THE MANY GATED CITY
This is a 25 minute talk by Peter Dale Scott on Thomas Merton, the catholic priest, Trappist monk, writer of over 70 books, poet, and social activist. Scott, best known for his writings on foreign policy, the CIA and the drug trade, shares many of the complexities that have made Thomas Merton, who died in 1968, so intriguing. To this day Thomas Merton's name and writings are associated with the acceptance of the spiritual traditions of Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Sufism by western spiritual thinkers and poets such as Thoreau, Yeats, Pound, Eliot, and Rilke.

The spiritual and literary connections that Scott lays out in this talk are interwoven with not just Merton's ideas on mutual respect, inner and outer peace, liberation theology, and Gandhian nonviolence - but with the vision for a cultural societal as well as a personal change that can bring about a peaceful world.

This is a fascinating survey of the rich history of mutually inspiring contact between the living traditions of the East and West that now have been suffocated in the war on terror. Literary and spiritual contacts that are essential for world peace have been broken by war. And in that sense a talk on Merton is a talk on the road to peace - especially from a poet and political writer such as Scott who knows so much about war.

END OF INDUSTRIAL CIVILIZATION
and Wild Dreams of a New Beginning
Documentary of an art exhibition under the title of End of Industrial Civilization in the small former logging town of Willits, CA, with poems and paintings by Ferlinghetti; and collages, and photos from Indian reservations by Maria Gilardin.

The program opens with the Ferlinghetti poem: Wild Dreams of a New Beginning, written in 1974, about the mile high tidal wave that runs over Los Angeles which sinks like the Titanic, all lights lit; crosses the country to sweep Manhattan Island clean in 16 seconds. The washed land then awakes again to wilderness, and the Indians reclaim their canoes.

The poem was part of an art exhibition in Willits, CA, around the theme: End of Industrial Civilization, with poems and paintings by Ferlinghetti; and collages, and photos from Indian reservations by Maria Gilardin. The show also included a small library with The Airconditioned Nightmare by Henry Miller and Kirkpatrick Sale's article: Lessons from the Luddites.

Sale had written in the Nation in 1995 that we need to set limits on technology: "As our own daily experience has convinced us, we in the industrial world are in the middle of a social and political revolution that is almost without parallel. ..This transformation is, without anyone being prepared for it, overwhelming the communities and institutions and customs that once were the familiar stanchions of our lives.

Resistors to industrial civilization, Sale said, .. could find their most useful models in the 19th century Luddites who fought the introduction of the huge mechanized looms and child labor. "It was not all machinery that the Luddites opposed, but "all Machinery hurtful to Commonality," as a March 1812 letter to a hated manufacturer put it.

GEOENGINEERING THE PLANET
Addressing the effects, not the causes, of climate change
Geo-engineers are proposing large scale global projects to reduce solar radiation. They want to force the oceans into absorbing more CO2 through "fertilization", and they work on carbon sequestration and weather modification.  

While most climate scientist left the Copenhagen Summit feeling gloomy about the lack of action to halt climate change, a small group felt emboldened. They are the geo-engineers who are proposing large scale global projects to reduce solar radiation by spreading sulphate aerosols into the atmosphere, placing sunshades into space or by whitening the clouds. They also want to force the oceans into absorbing more of the excess CO2 through "fertilization" by spreading urea, iron or phosphorous. And they work on carbon sequestration and weather modification. What seemed until recently a mad science fiction project is now gaining acceptance by corporations, politicians, the US Department of Energy, climate change deniers and funders.

Among the institutions where geoengineering research is being done are: Lawrence Livermore National Lab, Stanford University, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the German Max Planck Institute, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Universities of Manchester, Bristol and Edinburgh, UK - as well as labs and corporations in Canada, India, China, Australia and many other places.

The nonprofit civil society organization, the ETCGroup, has probably followed the issue of geoengineering more closely and over the longest period of time. At least that is the opinion of the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation. They commission the ETCGroup to write a pamphlet called "Retooling the Planet?" with an overview over and detailed critique of geoengineering. It came out in the Fall of 2009, and is freely available on their website ETCGroup.org. The ETC group has fundamental objections to geoengineering since it treats only the symptoms, not the causes of climate change and can be used as an excuse for delaying the implementation of CO2 reductions. But they also wanted to issue a warning that large scale open field, real world experiments in ocean fertilization and solar radiation management may be about to begin and need to come under scrutiny.

The ETCGroup reports that indigenous peoples, civil society organizations and women's group have already expressed their opposition to geoengineeering schemes. Most of these organization are in the global South and they need to hear from the opposition in the industrialized countries, especially in the US and the UK. The goals are to bring about a ban on any real-world experimentation in geoengineering, to expose the overt and covert interests of the players, and to demand accountability from governments, corporations and scientists who are actively promoting these technologies.

WHO WERE THE LUDDITES?
Machine smashers of the 19th century or members of a fascinating social movement with visionary insights into the unfolding drama of industrialization?

The impact of today's technologies on social relations and the planet itself is becoming an intriguing field of inquiry. However so far the discussion of nuclear power, biotechnology, deforestation, automobiles or computers is pretty much dominated by industry and government who want us to take all this for granted.

In this context it is inspiring to remember the Luddites who questioned industrial civilization at its very beginning in England during the introduction of mechanized textile mills. They knew that the power-looms that they selectively destroyed were not just a technology but would create a whole new set of relations: Factory work, child labor, and the demise of artisan and skilled labor. They anticipated that the new machines, that they themselves had helped build, were not the promised tool to help them in their work but would eventually become part of a machine culture with power over human life and even human consciousness.

Iain Boal is an independent scholar and historian of technology. He taught a course on the Luddites at Stanford University. This lecture was expanded into a book project, Resisting the Virtual Life, an anthology edited by Iain Boal and James Brook and published by City Lights.

Ali Abunimah
ON THE ONGOING EFFORTS TO FREE GAZA AND THE BOYCOTT ISRAEL MOVEMENT
Ali Abunimah spoke in Berkeley, CA, at the end of February 2010 and gave an assessment of the situation in Gaza, one year after the terrible 22 day long assault by Israel. Homes, schools and health clinics still lie in ruins because Israel and Egypt who control all land and sea access into Gaza do not allow building materials to enter. Of 122 clinics 46% are destroyed, of 640 schools 18 are completely destroyed, 280 are damaged and can't be repaired. People still live in the ruins of their former homes.

A vibrant international movement to end the blockade is making ongoing attempts to enter through Egypt and by sea to bring supplies into Gaza. Ali Abunimah was part of the Gaza Freedom March in December 2009. The suffering of the Palestinians in Gaza has strengthened the international Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. The movement has also united Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza with those dispersed through the world and with the few still living in Israel as second class citizens. Abunimah, along with author Naomi Klein are prominent supporters of that boycott Israel movement.

The plight of the people in Gaza has also revived a venerable idea to solve the Israel Palestine conflict. Instead of the failed two state solution Abunimah and others are calling for one state for two peoples. I this speech as well as in his 2006 book One Country: A Bold Proposal to End the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Abunimah explains how that may come about.

Ali Abunimah is a Palestinian American activist and author. He is often heard on Democracy Now as co-founder of the Electronic Intifada, an online publication about the Israel Palestine conflict. Born in Washington, DC, he spent his early years in England and Belgium before returning to attend Princeton University. His mother was expelled from from Lifta, now controlled by Israel, his father is from the West Bank.

Helen Caldicott, has devoted the last 38 years to an international campaign to educate the public about the medical hazards of the nuclear age and the necessary changes in human behavior to stop environmental destruction. She was only 23 years old when she received her medical degree from the University of Adelaide, Australia, in 1961. Ten year later, in 1971, she was in her first successful antinuclear campaign to stop French atmospheric nuclear testing in the Pacific.

While living in the United States from 1977 to 1986, she co-founded Physicians for Social Responsibility, an organization of 23,000 doctors committed to educating their colleagues about the dangers of nuclear power, nuclear weapons and nuclear war.

Helen Caldicott
BANNING NUCLEAR WEAPONS
In 1986 the city of Berkeley, CA, - as one of many around the globe - passed a Nuclear Free Act which allows the city to boycott companies involved in nuclear work. The University of CA Berkeley however, which runs the nuclear weapons lab at Lawrence Livermore and - until recently the Los Alamos Lab is - as State institution - exempt from the municipal regulation.

The anti-nuclear campaigner Dr. Helen Caldicott spoke in Berkeley at a June 2009 meeting of SuperBOLD, an organization dedicated to enforcing the Nuclear Free ordinance. They are trying to prevent the Berkeley Public library from hiring the 3M corporation to maintain the Radio Frequency checkpoint system there. 3M refuses to sign a contract that they will not do “work for nuclear weapons.”

For over 35 years Helen Caldicott has led the international efforts to educate the public about the dangers of nuclear power and weapons and has been named one of the most influential women of the 20th century by the Smithsonian Institute.

She has written numerous books, among them Nuclear Power is not the Answer (2006), and War in Heaven: The Arms Race in Outer Space (2007). Helen Caldicott has begun producing a free, weekly one hour radio program entitled: If You Love This Planet.

The EXECUTION of Martin Luther King

Bill Pepper's friendship with King and his family goes back to 1967. Pepper had gone to Vietnam and taken photos of children burned by napalm. King asked to meet with him and they worked closely together during the anti-Vietnam war phase of King's life. Abrupt Climate Change and Our Future
Dr. Thompson issues a warning that the mountain glaciers he knows and loves are melting ever more dramatically just within the year of 2007. He is the leading expert on glaciers with 30 years of on location research.

Dr. Lonnie Thompson saw one of the first ice cores that was recovered from a glacier when he was in graduate school. He was fascinated by the amount of data on earth history, past climate and world changing events that can be read from these ice cores and made the exploration of ice his life's work. He now teaches in the Department of Geological Sciences and is Senior Research Scientists at the Byrd Polar Center at Ohio State University.

In three decades he has explored most of the mountain glaciers of this world, has learned their history going back tens of thousands of years via the ice cores he and his team drilled at altitudes that no helicopter can reach. He came to San Francisco in early December 2007 to issue this warning.

Thompson was the honored speaker at the December 2007 meeting of the American Geophysical Union. The hotel where Dr. Thompson spoke recorded the event for the AGU. This is the only other audio or visual record of this amazing talk.

In September of 2007 the International Forum on Globalization held a Teach in Washington DC on climate change, peak oil and global resource depletion & extinction. <http://www.ifg.org>

Several Panel meetings addressed the many false solutions to the climate crisis that may be accelerating the danger rather than alleviating it. Coal for example is now promoted as a substitute for oil and promises for the capture of the carbon are made that are not yet possible with current technologies and may never be available on a large scale.

Jutta Kill is a climate campaigner and activist for FERN, an NGO based in Europe. A participant in the Durban Group's critique of carbon trading she eloquently describes how the system favors large corporations and will prevent a transition to renewable energy production. Dr. Arjun Makhijani argues against the resurgence of nuclear power. He holds a Ph.D. in engineering, specializing in nuclear fusion, from U.C. Berkeley. He is the principal author of the first study ever done (and completed in 1971) on the energy conservation potential in the U.S. economy.

The speakers were recorded at the Confronting the Global Triple Crisis teach in, organized by the International Forum on Globalization, in Washington DC in September 2007.

WITNESS TO THE MELTING OF THE GREENLAND ICE
An Inuit elder speaks

in the Valley of the Ancients on Greenland.

When I first heard his voice in 2007 I wished I could move radio stations to play this recording every day to show that voices like his can reach us and inspire us to recognize our common future. But even though there is enough water bound up in the melting Greenland ice sheet to raise sea level by 21 feet and drown the cities of London and New York this program had very limited distribution. That's why I decided to play his appeal again - two years later as the Inuit of the circumpolar regions appeal to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. They want the world to pay attention to the one region of the world where climate change is the most rapid and has accelerated since Ithluk spoke.

In 2008, one year after he was recorded, Greenland had the greatest ice losses ever, three times the amount that Ithluk had observed. That may mean that Greenland has reached the tipping point. Jason Box, associate professor of geography at Ohio State’s Byrd Polar Research Center, said after the 2008 numbers were compiled QUOTE “We now know that the climate doesn't have to warm any more for Greenland to continue losing ice,” Box said. “It has probably passed the point where it could maintain the mass of ice that we remember." That loss of ice translates into global sea level rises of potentially up to 6 feet by 2100.

Ross Gelbspan is a Pulitzer Price winning journalist, climate activist and author of The Heat Is On and Boiling Point. He says that the speed of global warming has blind sided all of us. The first warning by James Hansen came in 1988. 20 years later scientists tell us we are at, or have passed, the point of no return. All this came from one degree of warming. We can no longer burn coal and oil. Susan George is chair of the planning board of the Transnational Institute, <www.tni.org>. One of her recent books is: Another World is possible if.. (Verso 2004) Susan George proposes a new Keynesianism, not military but environmental this time, that could bring about a massive conversion to eco friendly industry and alternative energies and resolve the looming recession that we are facing at the same time. Walden Bello is professor of sociology at the university of the Philippines and leader of the anti corporate globalization and peace movement. He is cofounder of Focus on the Global South, <www.focusweb.org> based in Bangkok, Thailand. His book, Dragons in Distress, is widely regarded as the classic that predicted the collapse of the East Asian economies later in that decade.” He puts the triple crisis in the context of capitalism and the policies of globalization and growth. ANTHRAX-WAR
A film by Bob Coen & Eric Nadler
Film makers Bob Coen and Eric Nadler investigate the forgotten story of the 2001 anthrax attacks. A week after 9/11 letters containing the weaponized Ames strain of anthrax began arriving in the mail. These attacks— despite the FBI’s claim that the case is closed— remain  unsolved to this day.

In tracing the anthrax attacks to the center of the U.S. bio-defense program, this film raises an alarm. Biological weapons research on global pandemics is now being conducted by corporations and private labs without government oversight.

The 2009 film, ANTHRAX-WAR, and the accompanying book: Dead Silence, Fear and Terror on the Anthrax Trail, detail the seven-year global journey by Coen and Nadler. They uncover an underground black market in bio-warfare materials and attempts to develop a so-called "ethnic bio-weapon", targeting black populations in Africa. Along the way they investigate the suspicious sudden deaths of scientists, among them Bruce Ivins, who was named the lone suspect eight days after his alleged suicide and the questionable suicide by British weapons inspector and anthrax researcher David Kelly.

THE MYSTERIOUS COLLAPSE OF WORLD TRADE CENTER 7
The collapse of Building 7 on the afternoon of 9/11 was overshadowed by that of the Twin Towers in spite of one eerie similarity. Even though it had not been hit by a plane, the 47 story building also came down at free fall speed, collapsing into it's footprint. FEMA admitted in their initial report in 2002 that they had no good explanation as to why the building came down and an official silence fell over the fate of the building for six more years.

Then, in November 2008, the federal technology agency NIST released the Final WTC 7 Investigation Report. In their executive summary they say that heating of floor beams and girders caused one of 82 support column to fail, initiating a fire-induced progressive collapse that led to the failure of the 81 others and brought the building down.

9-eleven researcher David Ray Griffin scrutinized the NIST report page by page and published his findings in book form in the summer of 2009. He set out to prove that NIST arrived at their conclusions by disregarding evidence and said that "The omission of evidence by NIST is so massive, that I treat it as a distinct type of scientific fraud."

The omissions listed in this talk include work done by FEMA, the USGS, dust analysis by international labs, and eyewitness reports from police officers and city officials.

Prof. Griffin retired from the Claremont School of Theology, where he had taught for 30 years, and wrote in 2004 the most widely read book on the subject: The New Pearl Harbor, disturbing questions about the Bush administration and 9-11.

BUSH Radio, Cape Town
South Africa's first community radio station
Noam Chomsky praised the vitality and professionalism of South Africa's most influential community station. This is an intriguing look into the day to day operations of the station that defined how radio is done and trained staff for 80+ stations. When you visit Bush Radio in Cape Town any Saturday morning you find children as young as 6 years doing their own programming. Weekdays the news department presents local news on the air, in writing as blog, including photos and video.

Denied a license under the old Apartheid regime, Bush Radio went on the air illegally in 1993. Two broadcasters were arrested and the equipment confiscated. After the historic elections of 1994 the first broadcast licenses issued by the Mandela government were specifically for community broadcasters. In June of 1995 Bush Radio received its license to broadcast. Bush Radio played a huge role in defining the laws and practice of community radio in South Africa. Over the last eight years they trained approximately 500 people to operate a radio station. Almost every one of the nearly 90 stations in existence in South Africa today employs at least one person trained at Bush Radio.

In the summer of 2009 Brenda Leonard, the Bush Radio administrator, went on a US tour of public radio stations. I met her in San Francisco and asked her to tell me about the day to day operations of Bush Radio. <http://www.bushradio.co.za>

THE REAL PATCH ADAMS
How to eliminate greed and profit in health care
In the 1998 movie Robin Williams played Patch Adams, the funny doctor with a red clown's nose, the young man who almost committed suicide but then found joy in becoming a physician and taking care of people. That movie made Patch Adams a folk hero but it also undermined the deeper meaning of the healing project that he and his friends were and are building today.

In this program Patch Adams gives a review of the history of his project, the Gesundheit Institute, <http://www.patchadams.org> lists some of the international activities on behalf of orphans, prevention of child sexual slavery and women's mortality in childbirth. Adams now wants to build a full hospital based on the principles of healing that he laid out in this talk.

One week before this talk, Adams was invited by Republican congress members to talk about health care. This program includes his report of his defense of Single Payer to a group that had applauded Cheney and Rove a week earlier.

THE FREE GAZA MOVEMENT
The Free Gaza Movement <http://www.freegaza.org/> began in the Fall of 2006. Seeing all land borders of Gaza controlled by Israel - and by Egypt at Rafah - severely restricting the crossing of urgently needed food, fuel, and medicine for 1.4 million Palestinians - they decided to reach Gaza by sea, and directly challenge the Israeli siege. 

They found two, small, wooden fishing boats. In August 2008 they became the first international boats to land in the port of Gaza in 41 years. Between August and December 2008 the Free Gaza Movement successfully broke the Israeli siege five times and arrived in Gaza with international crews and humanitarian aid.

In response to the month-long Israeli war on Gaza that began at the end of December 2008 the Free Gaza Movement sent a ship with over 3 tons of emergency medical supplies, and 3 surgeons. Cynthia McKinney, former U.S. congresswoman and Green Party presidential candidate, decided to participate in this journey.

This time the Israeli navy rammed the ship, almost sinking it - then abandoned the disabled vessel. This is McKinney's story of confrontation with the Israeli navy in international waters, up to the boarding of the second Free Gaza Boat by Israeli commandos and the kidnapping and imprisoning the passengers.

Cynthia McKinney <http://www.allthingscynthiamckinney.com/> came to Sonoma State University on August 15, 2009 to tell a story that made it around the world as breaking news - but was almost completely ignored by the US media.

Cynthia McKinney made history in 1992 when she became the first African American woman to represent Georgia in Congress. However she soon found herself in the sites of AIPAC, the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, Israel's officially registered lobby, when she refused to sign a statement supporting Israel that is routinely demanded by AIPAC of every candidate for Congress from either party.

She went on to be one of the handful of members of Congress to defend the rights of the Palestinians. She lost the Democratic primary of 2002, when contributions from across the country from pro-Israel sources flowed to her opponent. In 2004, she ran again and, despite attacks again from pro-Israel forces, she regained her seat in office although she was denied her seniority by House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi. In 2006, her Democratic party opposition united behind a single candidate. Cynthia McKinney was defeated and left Congress.

THE CERES COMMUNITY PROJECT
A phone conversation with the Executive Director Cathryn Couch and client Katherine Kraemer.
In the California town of Sebastopol high school students meet for two hours after school on a day of their choice to cook organic healing food for people with serious health problems. Named after the Greek goddess of agriculture and generosity, Ceres, this project is almost entirely based on gifts. The teenage volunteers enjoy cooking so much that there is a waiting list. Sonoma County organic farmers donate most of the food, the use of the first kitchen was donated by a church, and volunteers are bringing the prepared dishes to the homes of the clients. These clients, and often their whole family receive a week's worth of beautifully prepared food as gift for up to three months. After that time they are asked to contribute. Their donation to the Ceres Community Project can be as little as $5 a week.

The Ceres Project is young - it started in March of 2007 - but it has touched so many lives, and inspired such gratitude and a kind of generosity that increased fourfold the number of meals provided in 2008. In early 2009 there is already the first attempt to duplicate the project in a neighboring county.

The Ceres Project came to the attention of another community organization, the West Marin radio station KWMR <http://kwmr.org/> and Mike Litchfield, host of the series: Heading Home. When Ceres Project founder Cathryn Couch first appeared on the air the station received so many requests to hear her again that Cathryn came back on the air in March of 2009. AMERICA'S AFGHANISTAN
US National Security and a Heroin-Ravaged State
The US State Department calls Afghanistan a failed state that justifies US intervention, rather than acknowledging that US intervention has caused that so-called failure. And among all the triggers to that failure from US support of the Mujahedin and Al Quaeda to the war lords one element is not recognized in it’s real importance: the role of the trade in opium.

Peter Dale Scott, author of “Drugs Oil, and War” and “Cocaine Politics: Drugs, Armies, and the CIA in Central America” is one of the most respected researchers on the use of drugs in the strategies of the CIA and in US foreign policy. <http://www.peterdalescott.net/> He says that the unprecedented increase in Afghani opium production in the last 5 years could never have happened without outside support.

While Afghanistan is being ravaged by heroin and many farmers are forced to grow for very little profit the real gains of drug production are made by large political players and on the international market. Even though Afghanistan now supplies over 90% of the world’s heroin, the Afghan portion of the global heroin network, in dollar terms, is financially minute compared to what is earned elsewhere. According to the UN, the ultimate value in world markets in 2007 of Afghanistan’s $4 billion opium crop was about $110 billion.

This talk by Professor Scott is putting names and faces on the beneficiaries of that drug trade. BANNING NUCLEAR WEAPONS
In 1986 the city of Berkeley, CA, - as one of many around the globe - passed a Nuclear Free Act which allows the city to boycott companies involved in nuclear work. The University of CA Berkeley however, which runs the nuclear weapons lab at Lawrence Livermore and - until recently the Los Alamos Lab is - as State institution - exempt from the municipal regulation.

The anti-nuclear campaigner Dr. Helen Caldicott spoke in Berkeley at a June 2009 meeting of SuperBOLD, an organization dedicated to enforcing the Nuclear Free ordinance. They are trying to prevent the Berkeley Public library from hiring the 3M corporation to maintain the Radio Frequency checkpoint system there. 3M refuses to sign a contract that they will not do “work for nuclear weapons.”

For over 35 years Helen Caldicott has led the international efforts to educate the public about the dangers of nuclear power and weapons and has been named one of the most influential women of the 20th century by the Smithsonian Institute.

She has written numerous books, among them Nuclear Power is not the Answer (2006), and War in Heaven: The Arms Race in Outer Space (2007). Helen Caldicott has begun producing a free, weekly one hour radio program entitled: If You Love This Planet.

Lorenzo Milam just made me aware of an anti-nuclear piece that Lawrence Ferlinghetti wrote in 1958. I asked Ferlinghetti, who is now 90 years young, to read it again, 51 years later. Ferlinghetti had seen Nagasaki a few weeks after the atom bomb destroyed it. That experience changed his life. "The Tentative Description of a Dinner to Promote the Impeachment of President Eisenhower" is less about Eisenhower than about all Presidents since then who failed to end the nuclear age. Ferlinghetti reads about the "strange rain that would never stop .. and perverted pollen blown on sunless seas - eaten by irradiated fish who spawned up cloudleaf streams and fell upon our dinner plates."

George Galloway
VIVA PALESTINA
Breaking the siege of GAZA
George Galloway is an outspoken Member of the British Parliament, serving since 1987. He is perhaps best known for his support of Palestine and his campaign to end economic sanctions against Iraq. When he stood up to Tony Blair and called the invasion of Iraq illegal he was expelled from the Labour Party.

After participating in daily demonstrations in England during the Israeli assault on Gaza from the end of December 2008 into January 2009, Galloway led a convoy of vehicles loaded with humanitarian aid to Gaza. Under the name VIVA Palestina the convoy began in England in February 2009, crossed from Spain into North Africa and entered Gaza from Egypt with over 200 vehicles through the Rafah crossing that is usually kept locked by the Egyptian government.

Galloway says that if it were not for the extraordinary influence of the Israeli government that  maintains a blockade of GAZA, aid from governments and UN sources would be pouring into the war ravaged Gaza strip. He says that 61,200 homes were destroyed and Palestinians are still living in the rubble because Israel refuses to allow building materials into Gaza. Galloway plans to do what the international community fails to do and continue to lead convoys from other countries as well, including Russia and China.

Galloway was touring the US in April and May 2009 to invite donors and participants from the United States for the next convoy to Gaza. LIFTING THE STATE OF EMERGENCY
An unresolved legacy of the Bush administration
Very few seem to know and among the few who know most don't seem to care that the US remains under a state of emergency declared by the Bush administration. The state of emergency was formally proclaimed five days after 9/11 on September 14th, 2001, and extended by Bush repeatedly thereafter, most recently on August 28th, 2008 for yet another year.

Under cover of this State of Emergency, the Bush administration enacted many extreme measures, ranging from suspension of habeas corpus, to the preparations for martial law in the US.
In early 2009 an attempt was made to alert the public and put pressure on Congress to lift the state of emergency.

In February 2009 Professor Peter Dale Scott <http://www.peterdalescott.net/> and former Congressman Dan Hamburg wrote a formal letter to President Obama's staff and several congress people. They referred to the National Emergencies Act, one of the post-Watergate reforms that requires specifically that not later than six months after a national emergency is declared, and not later than the end of each six-month period thereafter that such emergency continues, each House of Congress shall meet to consider a vote on a joint resolution to determine whether that emergency shall be terminated.

ITHACA COMMUNITY MONEY
A history of the ITHACA HOURS community currency
During the Great Depression when banks were closed so they could be audited - over 400 currencies called SCRIPT were used in the US to buy food and services. When the banks reopened, sometimes several months later, SCRIPT was replaced with the federal currency.

Since the beginning of the financial crisis a resurgence of interest in alternative money systems has led to many new initiatives. A new website in the US called mainstreetcash.org is giving an overview over a huge number of community currencies and computer based trading systems with space for comment and discussion.

Featured on that web site are the Ithaca Hours, the oldest printed paper currency in the US. Founded in 1991 by Paul Glover it has been in continuous use, it's popularity rising and diminishing with fluctuations in the overall economy.

Each paper bill is a small piece of art and a commentary on the federal currency. At the top it says: IN ITHACA WE TRUST. - rather than In God We Trust. The currency is issued for the town of Ithaca and the surrounding farms - which means that the money will benefit local  exchanges and local jobs and can never go away as it does when we take dollars to WalMart.

An independent movie on the question "Where does money come from?" already has had a huge two year success with well over 2 million viewers on the internet. Now it is seeing another surge of interest because it also explains some of the underpinnings of the current financial crisis.
 
Money as Debt by the Canadian Paul Grignon makes the case that only a small part of our money is created by the government mint that prints or coins it. The vast majority of money is created by banks whenever a loan or mortgage is made. Banks, which are private institutions, are given enormous power to make and manage money and it is well worth today, in light of the crash of so many banks, to look at the monetary system.

Annie Machon
BEYOND THE WAR ON TERROR
When Annie Machon studied classics at Cambridge University she was recruited by MI5, the British equivalent of the FBI. Machon spent 6 years as an operative against so-called political subversives.

While working for MI5 she and her then partner and colleague David Shayler discovered illegalities and outright crimes committed by their colleagues - both in MI5 and MI6, the British equivalent to the CIA. They ranged from illegal surveillance of labor politicians, and illegal phone tabs, to direct funding of Al Qaeda and false flag operations.

In the mid nineties, when Shayler was the head of the Lybian section at MI5 he worked with the corresponding section in MI6. He learned about their plot to assassinate Colonel Muammar Qaddafi. The plot was funded by MI6 and carried out. Several people were killed, most of them local residents who simply watched the convoy go by. Qaddafi was not hurt.

The assassination plot was the turning point for Machon and Shayler. They resigned from the agency and became whistle blowers. They hoped to initiate a parliamentary investigation into MI5 and MI6 to shed light on the increasing power of spy agencies and the growing immunity of what they call the Secret State. They say that after 9/11 the power of the Secret Sate is being enlarged everywhere and even a change in administration does not appear to roll back that power - not just in Britain, but apparently in the US as well.

While Shayler and Machon were fighting to reign in the MI5 and MI6 they encountered another, even larger complex of lies and secrets. The false information that led to Britain joining the war on Iraq. They joined the peace movement in hopes to alert others to learn from their example and mistrust the information on weapons of mass destruction coming out of the US CIA. Machon explains why she joined the 9/11 truth movement and how many vibrant groups in Europe and Russia are now campaigning for an independent - potentially international - new investigation of the events of 9/11.

SAVING AMERICAN POLITICS FROM THE PRESENT TWO-PARTY SYSTEM
The disparity of income and wealth in this country was increased by the first round of bank bail-outs. On Jan. 27, 2009, in front of an audience of Republicans, Scott explained in great detail the necessity to construct future bail-outs to diminish that gap for the sake of democracy. This is a lucid analysis and a well researched guideline for all who want to influence future financial policies.

This is also the only recording of a very unusual event. The San Francisco Republican Round Table crossed party lines and invited Peter Dale Scott. Scott is a former Canadian diplomat and professor of Literature at the University of California, Berkeley. His latest books are: The Road to 9/11: Wealth, Empire, and the Future of America, published in 2007 by the University of California Press, and The War Conspiracy: JFK, 9/11, and the Deep Politics of War, published in 2008 by the Mary Ferrell Foundation Press. SUN ENGINES AND CONCENTRATED SOLAR POWER (CSP)
A brief history of a carbon free technology that could produce enough electricity to replace coal. CSP was pioneered by US engineers in the late 19th century and lost out to oil and coal. 

President Nixon asked Fred Morse whether solar energy made sense for America. His answer was "definitely yes". Fred Morse went on to manage solar energy in the Department of Energy for Presidents Carter and Reagan until 1989 when the programs were dismantled. Today Morse is the senior adviser for US operations for the Spanish firm Abengoa. They operate in over 70 countries and specialize in solar and bio-energy. Our foremost climatologist, NASA's James Hansen, has demonstrated that our only hope of getting our atmosphere back to a safe level - below 350 parts per million CO2 - lies in stopping the use of coal to generate electricity.

Hansen points out that policy devices such as emissions reduction targets and cap-and-trade schemes simply will not work because there is already too much CO2 in the air. Much of the carbon dioxide given off by Robert Stephenson’s “Rocket” locomotive in 1829 is still in the atmosphere. Around 20% will still be present in thousands of years. If carbon dioxide continues to be released, even at the reduced rates now proposed, the amounts that remain will continue to build up. With present-day levels already posing real dangers, today’s policies of emissions reduction and carbon trading represent merely a slightly slower road to climate apocalypse. The lesson, Hansen argues, is that the bulk of the Earth’s remaining fossil fuels must be left untouched.

Coal River Mountain is the site of an absurdity.  I learned about Coal River Mountain from students at Virginia Tech last fall.  They were concerned about Coal River Mountain, but at that time most of them were working to support Barack Obama.  They assumed Barack Obama would not allow such outrages to continue. The issue at Coal River Mountain is whether the top of the mountain will be blown up, so that coal can be dredged out of it, or whether the mountain will be allowed to stand.

Pres. Obama's energy secretary, Steven Chu, says he will streamline loan guarantees to build nuclear and coal fired power plants. This puts nuclear power on the watch list for the Obama administration.

This program features one of the great orators and elders of the anti nuclear movement. David Freeman shut down 8 of their 14 reactors while heading the Tennessee Valley Authority under Pres. Carter. He calls nuclear a failed technology and says that, in the age of terrorism, we need a police state to guard those Trojan horses.

Preceding Freeman's comment you will hear from Dr. Arjun Makhijani. He holds a degree in engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked on plasma physics and controlled nuclear fusion. He is the principal editor and co-author of NUCLEAR WASTELANDS, the first global assessment of the effects of nuclear weapons production. He addresses the issues of nuclear proliferation and why nuclear technologies have spread in spite of the efforts, begun in the early 1960s to dismantle the existing weapons stockpiles.

Both speakers were attending a November 2005 conference organized by Dr. Helen Caldicott to deter the Bush administration from building new nuclear power plants. This is an updated version as a reminder to the current administration.

ISRAEL'S WAR ON GAZA
On January 8 and 9, 2009 the US Senate and House passed resolutions overwhelmingly supporting Israel’s offensive in Gaza. This in the face of growing condemnation of the war on Gaza from another overwhelming majority in the United Nations General Assembly, and in the face of popular outcry not just in Muslim countries but in major cities throughout Europe as well as in the US and Canada.

There is a general consensus that the US is the only country that can bring about a cease fire - given the fact that it is Israel's strongest ally and financier. Yet the governing bodies and political elites in the US remain near unanimous in their support for Israel's actions even though they are increasingly isolated in world opinion. 

This interview covers four topics: the elections that led to the victory of Hamas in Gaza, the question of who broke the cease fire, and the so called coup by Hamas which was instead a failed coup against Hamas by US trained Fatah fighters. Why did I donate?  I guess the short answer is that I very much appreciate and value the content of your programs.  I have heard perspectives and information that help me tie together things that I already know, or that help me see things in a different light.  I appreciate that your programs often help one to see what appears to me to be the "bigger picture" stripped of much of the typical cultural conditioning, propaganda, and national self-aggrandizement  that pervades mass media and what we usually are taught.  Yesterday, I was driving and listening to your program featuring John Trudell.  I was impressed by his story and his viewpoints, many of which I have come to have, myself.  Thinking about this and other programs of yours that I have enjoyed, I just thought it was about time to contribute monetarily.  Overdue, in fact.  Thanks for what you do. Thank you for this resource....have learned a lot about effects of nuclear power accidents and intend to study more. I had no idea about the effects of radioactive isotopes on pathogens...that concept really got my attention. Also, the transport of buried isotopes by plants years after an accident was very enlightening. As a nurse, I have been trying to study this topic since Fukushima, trying to be prepared  for possible future patients and really appreciate your work.

No one should ever doubt how ahead of the curve TUC Radio was and is.  In 1996, I bought a TUC cassette tape of a group lecture called Computers for a Brave New World.  On it, sociologist Helena Norbert Hodge set forth the notion that in the new global economy, the ideal consumer for all products and services becomes a 16-year-old boy.  I’ve mentioned that idea to dozens of people in the years since, gradually seeing it morph from cutting-edge theory to common knowledge.  Just the other day I spoke with a leading reporter in the Hollywood press, for instance, who bemoaned this reality with respect to the difficulties of women in gaining positions of power in the entertainment industry.  But it all started with Helena, Maria, and TUC Radio…

Hi Maria,

I have listened occasionally for years, and have always been impressed with your approach which combines thoroughness, fairness and courtesy with the willingness to call a spade a spade. So much media just repeats the talking points from each side, or at least the two loudest sides, without ever separating what is knowable truth, and what is opinion, interpretation or spin.

You are a breath of fresh air compared to my amazingly pessimistic Libertarian brother. Hopefully those of us that believe in building things together can outlast those who just want to scrap it all in the name of "liberty".

At this moment I'm listening to the TUC Ruppert segments from "Collapse"... I'm seriously, existentially depressed (and have been for almost two years now) as I review the period through which I have lived (1942-present). I acknowledge the unprecedented technological progress that has occurred during this period and I've reveled in its contributions to the betterment of my life, but now the hangover is upon me. I see the other side: It has also been the most flagrantly malignant, anti-life period humans have experienced (perpetrated?) so far because so much of the horror is now more or less global in its implications. And the chickens are just beginning to come home to roost.

Hi Maria!

I've been listening to your productions for nearly a decade. I discovered Internet radio right around 2001 and it quickly became my primary window on the world. It started with reliance on rfpi.org on shortwave in the late 1990s as a way to stay sane in Alaska. I think I have everything you have released since that time on one or another hard drive.

I still go back to the 2 part reading of Alex Carey's work, the talks by Bill Pepper, and the lecture by Richard Grossman.

Best wishes for your new home. You have helped us see clearly, but there seems to be nothing we can do about it. The myth is gone; we wait and work for the justice that must be done.

On Monday night I visited your website for the first time, and ended up listening to Michael Parenti for about 4 hours.  I got to sleep around 3 am,  but is was worth it.

I discovered Thomas Greco on the Global Research News Hour archives, and then I went to noliesradio and saw an interview there for the same guy and then I saw that the source was you!

So glad to discover you, and I read a little of your story about your house and so on--remarkable!!!   I am hoping to meet someone in my school who is so committed as you are!  It is the journey to the truth and reality (pretty sixties sounding) and my heart is captivated, entranced.

My wife and I are trying to start a self-sustainable Healing Arts Community Center, off the grid. Your programs are such a rare example of free speech and so inspiring to all who listen. Hi Maria,
Since I heard you interviewed on Global News Hour I've been regularly downloading your radio shows (and advising others to do so as well). Today I started reading Ilan Pappe's "The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine," an author I discovered through your audio archives and because of that, your appeal on the TUC website especially struck a nerve.  I thought it was about time I dipped my hands into my pocket and supported a show that is much needed in this time where propaganda masquerades as news; and that's on both sides of the Atlantic.

By the way whereas l enjoy listening to points of view unavailable elsewhere, I must add that I do not always agree with some of your speakers assertions, but I suspect that that is the engineer in me.

Hi Maria,
I try to remember to listen to your show on KGNU on Friday afternoons but it usually slips my attention.  This past Friday, I was delayed at work and, a bit after 4pm, it dawned on me to tune in.  I was intrigued by Peter Dale Scott's essay and went to your website to read a bit about him.  As I scrolled down, I saw mention of your debt, the amount you owed to your credit card.  Despising the American banking system and the excessive usury they practice and adoring the service you provide, I realized the time was right to make a donation.
That is my motivation.

Thank you very much for making these important Parenti lectures available. I looked up your collage work and it is excellent! It reminded me of some art work that I saw at Documenta in Kassel, Germany, two years ago. Very powerful images with some commentary and humor mixed in.

A huge thank you, Maria, for your thoughtful, informative programs. 

I am particularly impressed right now with the programs about Israel's ongoing attacks on Gaza.  I have always, throughout my life, cared about Israel and the Jewish people, but I am finding it very difficult to continue in support of their need for a place of their own when they show such cruelty toward the Palestinian people.  Their excuses for their destructive behavior just don't add up when you get the kind of information that Jeffrey Blankfort has given in your interview with him.

What really put it over the top for me was the segment on Democracy Now on Wednesday and Thursday with the young Palestinian student telling about the killing of his two brothers by Israeli soldiers who allowed his father to watch the slow death of one of his sons during a 20 hour period when they would not allow them to move from the car where they had been shot nor would allow medical treatment for them. 

The tipping point has been reached and with the help of programs like yours maybe we in the US can begin to see how our support of Israel is promoting this horrendous behavior.
I surely hope so.
