that this single measure has the potential of bringing together tens of

He says that the unprecedented increase in
Afghani opium production in the last 5 years could never have happened

are made by large political players and on the international market.
Even though Afghanistan now supplies over 90% of the world’s heroin,
the Afghan portion of the global heroin network, in dollar terms, is
financially minute compared to what is earned elsewhere. According to
the UN, the ultimate value in world markets in 2007 of Afghanistan’s $4

(As a project of one person TUC is not eligible for grants.) Magically donations each year were just enough to keep us alive. There is no savings account or retirement plan for me. Wisely - as it now turns out - I invested the annual surplus of about $2,000 in straw, clay, recycled doors and lumber and built over seven years the two room straw bale house in Northern California where I now live - free from "luxury" but also free from a mortgage. For the first time in 17 years TUC Radio ended the year of 2008 in debt. The solar system that I'm now using to produce radio cost $6,200. 27 of you gave a total of $3,800. I owed $2,400 to the credit card company when I made an e-mail appeal on Dec. 27 that 35 good people responded to. The GOOD NEWS is that on March 11 a longtime supporter of TUC Radio sent the check for the balance of the missing $2,400 and TUC Radio is now debt free! Check here for the names of the generous friends from all over the country and even abroad who made it possible: DONATIONS You can donate via this PayPal button: You can mail a check made out to TUC Radio to my P.O. BOX 44 in CALPELLA, CA. 95418 and I will find it with great joy on my weekly trips to town. If you like to receive a tax deduction please go through my fiscal sponsor. They accept any amount of and above $50. Send your check to Victoria at ISEC, P.O. BOX 9475, BERKELEY, CA. 94709. That check needs to be made out to ISEC and show "For TUC Radio" on the memo line. Occasionally I receive a phone call from someone who wants me to take a donation out of their credit card. If you like to take that route please try my fragile phone line (707) 463-2654. Nuclear waste and routine releases from nuclear reactors
IS NUCLEAR POWER COMING BACK?
When the anti nuclear campaigner Dr. Helen Caldicott called on leading
scientists and policy makers to debunk the claims that nuclear power
plants needed to be built to halt climate change, she was aiming at the
Bush administration. It now appears that plans to bring back nuclear
power are bipartisan and not restricted to the US either. So it is time
to revisit the arguments and remember the passionate campaigns of the
60s and 70s that stopped the building of new nuclear power plants in
the US and even raised hopes for the abolition of nuclear weapons.
The first speaker, Rep. Ed Markey, Mass, said that the 1979 accident
at
Three Mile Island was the beginning of the end of nuclear power in the
US. Within a year Markey, Helen Caldicott and others introduced the
nuclear freeze resolution into the House of Representatives. Sen.
Kennedy introduced it into the Senate. They made the linkage between
nuclear weapons, nuclear power and nuclear proliferation, a linkage
that still exists today.
Proponents of nuclear power claim that nuclear plants are emission
free. That is not true. All nuclear power plants release radioactive
substances into air and water during their day to day operations. Kay
Drey is a member of the board of directors of Beyond Nuclear. She
has worked for 30 years to protect the public, workers and the
environment from the hazards of nuclear power and radioactive waste. In
1996 she chaired a statewide campaign in Missouri, her home state, that
led to the cancellation of a nuclear reactor then under construction.
She also led the successful campaign against the construction of a
permanent disposal bunker at the St. Louis Airport for uranium and
thorium wastes generated during the production of atomic weapons in the
1940s and ‘50s.
Kay Drey and Ed Markey spoke at a two day conference in November 2005
called by the internationally known anti nuclear campaigner Helen
Caldicott to deter the Bush administration from funding new nuclear
power plants. I am bringing back the highlight of that November 2005
conference since nuclear power projects are still part of the energy
mix.

IS NUCLEAR POWER COMING BACK?
A four-part mini-series based on a
briefing, on November 7 and 8, 2005, organized by Dr. Helen Caldicott.
IN MEMORIAM
Harold Pinter died in London on
December 24, 2008. This is a re-mastered, carefully edited version of
the original 46 minute speech.
Pinter was too ill to travel to Stockholm to accept the Nobel Prize.
This is a 2005 studio recording of a powerful voice, struggling to be
heard.
The video was played at the ceremony and distributed world-wide via the
internet and other independent media.
Not even the BBC dared play it during daytime.
Harold Pinter
ART, TRUTH & POLITICS
When Harold Pinter won the 2005 Nobel Prize in Literature, he used his
acceptance speech on December 7 to launch a blistering attack on George
Bush and
the British government, and a challenge to the conscience of people to
not stand by in the face of Bush's crimes.
Harold Pinter was born in October 1930 in East London. He was a
playwright, director, actor, poet and political activist. He has
written twenty-nine plays including The Birthday Party, The Caretaker,
The Homecoming, and Betrayal, and twenty-one screenplays including The
French Lieutenant's Woman and The Handmaid's Tale, a chilling expose of
what life would be like for women under a Christian fascist regime in
America.
Pinter's interest in politics was a very public one. His biographer
Michael Billington said: "Pinter remains, to his credit, a permanent
public nuisance, a questioner of accepted truths, both in life and
art." Pinter was an outspoken endorser of the call The World Can't
Wait,
Drive Out the Bush Regime.

HELEN CALDICOTT
Nuclear Power is not the Answer
Grand Round lecture by the Australian
pediatrician, anti nuclear
campaigner, and Nobel Prize nominee Dr. Helen Caldicott at Oakland
Children's Hospital, CA. This is a personal and passionate appeal to
doctors to inform the public and politicians about the proven effects
of radiation that the medical profession has studied and treated for so
long.
Helen Caldicott covers radiation dangers from each stage of the nuclear
fuel chain, from uranium mining, depleted uranium, to the fissioning of
the fuel rods inside the nuclear reactor. She talks about Alpha and
Gamma rays, isotopes, half lives and which parts of the human body are
affected by various forms of radiation.
This is a response to the international effort to bring back nuclear
power under the guise of holding off climate change. Helen Caldicott
explains that nuclear power is not emission free, it is dangerous in
all it's phases, and expensive. Unlike renewable wind and solar energy
nuclear power will not come on line fast enough to make a difference, a
difference that is needed now, not in 15 years.
For over 35 years Helen Caldicott has led the international efforts to
educate the public about the dangers of nuclear power and weapons and
has been named one of the most influential women of the 20th century by
the Smithsonian Institute. She has written numerous books, among them
Nuclear Power is not the Answer (2006)and War in Heaven: The Arms Race
in Outer Space (2007) Helen Caldicott has begun producing a free,
weekly one hour radio program entitled: If You Love This Planet. Her
site is <http://www.ifyoulovethisplanet.org>
In September 2008 Helen Caldicott did a phone interview with her
friend and colleague, Dr. Kate Hudson, chair of the CND, the Campaign
for Nuclear Disarmament. The CND,
active since 1958, is making a
renewed and very well received effort to remove nuclear weapons from
Britain and to stop the recent plans to build new nuclear power plants.
Kate Hudson is a long time peace activist and the chair of the Campaign
for Nuclear Disarmament in England. She is also Head of Social and
Policy Studies at London South Bank University and edits the journal
Contemporary Politics. She has written several books including:

ROBERT FISK
The Age of the Warrior
Fisk is Britain’s most celebrated foreign correspondent and has been
named International Journalist of the Year seven times. He is currently
the Middle East correspondent for The Independent of London and has
covered eleven major wars in over three decades. He lives in Beirut and
was one of only two journalists who had the courage to remain there
through the duration of the Lebanese civil war. I filmed him at his
most recent, rare, visit to the US as he spoke in front of a capacity
audience in Berkeley, CA. He was greeted with a standing ovation.
Anybody writing on current events or making policy decisions for the
Middle East needs to take Fisk's analysis into account. Fisk argues for
an immediate troop withdrawal, both from Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Age of the Warrior, his most recent book, is a collection of essays
from his paper, The Independent. Robert Fisk's previous books include
Pity the Nation and The Great War for Civilization. He spoke at a
benefit for the Middle East Children’s Alliance in Berkeley, CA, on
September 25, 2008. Fisk is a captivating speaker who supports his
arguments with reports from war zones where few dare to tread and a
wealth of historic examples.

MICHAEL PARENTI
Contrary Notions
City Light books in San Francisco's North Beach was filled to capacity
for the book party of Michael Parenti's most recent work: Contrary
Notions. This is a rich selection from the writings of a life time on
history, empire, wealth, class power, ideology and much more. Parenti
goes where few political analysts dare to go and - with acerbic wit
- makes transparent how he arrives at his conclusions. This
excerpt of his 45 minute talk addresses taboo subjects such as the
murder of the town of New Orleans and 9/11.

MICHAEL PARENTI
The JFK Assassination and the Gangster Nature of the State
When Oliver Stone’s movie JFK opened in December
1991 a huge PR campaign was mobilized against the film. Even
progressives spoke out. Noam Chomsky wrote in support of the Warren
Commission's findings – in contrast Michael Parenti gave one of his
highly acclaimed talks criticizing the lone assassin theory. The bitter
questions that haunted defenders and critics alike was whether
government agencies of a democratic country would do such a thing as
assassinate an elected President.
In this talk Michael Parenti turns to that question first – he
examines, in part one, what he calls “the gangster nature of the
state.” In part two he goes over details of the assassination and
critiques The Nation, The Progressive, Chomsky and Cockburn. He spoke
in Berkeley, CA, on the 30th anniversary of the JFK assassination.
This is one of many "standing ovations" talks by Parenti. The master
for this program was lost and this appears to be the only copy of the
original recording.

DIVERSITY
AND ORTHODOXY IN THE NEWS MEDIA
This August
28, 2008 analysis of the media is Parenti's most up-to-date
contribution. He gave the keynote speech for the Modern Media
Censorship lectures by Project Censored. Each year Project Censored <http://www.projectcensored.org/>
gives awards
for the most censored news stories of the year. Parenti lists important
criteria by which to judge media bias, ranging from ownership to
labeling, false objectivity and sensationalism, omission, outright lies
and the denial of causality with the famous theory of "stuff happens".
Michael Parenti has written and lectured on the mainstream media for
decades. His key book on the topic is "Inventing Reality - The politics
of the News Media."

CAPITALISM'S APOCALYPSE
Why the rich can't save anybody - not even themselves
Parenti predicted the financial crisis and said that giant corporate
capitalism - by it's very nature - is an apocalyptic system. When
unregulated the built in elements of ever increased growth may well
bring the whole system down. And he described the growing national debt
not as a tragic mistake but as a means to shift ever more money from
the tax payers to the financial institutions in the form of interest
payments. This speech is an analysis of the many structural flaws of a
capitalist system that puts it on a permanent collision course with
democracy.

On the financial crisis and the 2008 elections
I recorded the political journalist, editor of CounterPunch, long time
observer of the American political scene, writer for the Nation and
author of many books in the Northern California coastal town of Fort
Bragg. Cockburn had come down from Petrolia in Humboldt County to give
a pithy, provocative assessment of the presidential candidates. There
is not enough time to place this speech into radio distribution before
the November 4 deadline - but i want to do my best to get his opinions
on the financial crisis and the candidates McCain and Obama to the
widest possible audience via the internet and this web site. Here are

Michael Parenti: CONSPIRACY &
CLASS POWER
One of Parenti's most influential archival speeches
This is an in-depth analysis of the modern state
and the exercise of power behind the scenes. The speech is also an
important historic document. Given in 1993 it issues a warning of the
use of deception to justify going to war. The speech also explains the
expansion of the deregulated free market that would lead to a financial
crisis as we see it today.
The speech on Conspiracy and Class Power was lost for several years and
only recently discovered in the collection of a listener in
Seattle.
Michael Parenti spoke before an overflow audience in Berkeley, CA.
Michael Parenti is an internationally known author and lecturer. He
received his Ph.D. in political science from Yale in 1962 and is one of
the nation's leading progressive political thinkers. His highly
informative and entertaining books and talks have reached a wide range
of audiences in North America and abroad.
His books include Democracy for the Few, Superpatriotism, The

Bill McKibben on DEEP ECONOMY
A talk and conversation with Michael Pollan
Bill McKibben’s book: ‘The End of Nature’ is
regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change.
Published in 1989, it has been printed in more than 20 languages.
He has since written on localization, alternative energy, and the risks
associated with human genetic engineering. In his most recent book:
‘Deep Economy: The
Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future’ he envisions a transition
to local-scale enterprise.
McKibben and his family live in Vermont. He is a scholar in residence
at Middlebury College where he launched the campaign: stepitup2007,
demanding that global warming pollution be cut 80 percent by 2050.

Dr. Lonnie Thompson
ABRUPT CLIMATE CHANGE AND OUR FUTURE
Dr. Thompson issues a warning that the
mountain glaciers he knows and loves are melting ever more dramatically
just within the year of 2007. He is the leading expert on glaciers with
30 years of on location research.
Dr. Lonnie Thompson saw one of the first
ice cores that was recovered from a glacier when he was in graduate
school. He was fascinated by the amount of data on earth history, past
climate and world changing events that can be
read from these ice cores and made the exploration of ice his life's
work. He now teaches in the Department of Geological Sciences and is
Senior Research Scientists at the Byrd Polar Center at Ohio State
University.
In three decades he has explored most of the mountain glaciers of this
world, has learned their history going back tens of thousands of years
via the ice cores he and his team drilled at altitudes that no
helicopter can reach. He came to San Francisco in early December 2007
to issue this warning.
Thompson was the honored speaker at the December 2007 meeting of the
American Geophysical Union. The hotel where Dr. Thompson spoke recorded
the event for the AGU. This is the only other
audio or visual record of this amazing talk.

Edward Said:
PALESTINE AND THE UNIVERSALITY OF HUMAN RIGHTS
This is a special tribute on the anniversary of
the death of Edward Said who died
on September 25, 2003. Friends say that he knew that
his life was coming to an end when he gave this legacy address on the
eve of the invasion of Iraq.
Professor Said was known as both a scholar of
modern literature and an expert on Middle Eastern politics. Educated at
Princeton and Harvard he taught at Columbia. His books, which
have been translated into 36 languages, include: Covering Islam, and
The Politics of
Dispossession. He was born in Palestine before the founding of the
Jewish State. By 1950 his extended family had all fled Jerusalem for
Cairo. Like hundreds of thousands of Palestinians they were displaced
by the Jewish state that had been established two years earlier.

Richard Grossman
WHEN INJUSTICE IS LEGAL
WHAT DO THE ABOLITIONISTS TEACH
US ABOUT CHALLENGING CORPORATE RULE
Grossman describes how corporations usurped many of the rights that are
properly due to human beings and have become the dominant institutions
or our time – and how that dominance needs to be challenged in the
constitutional arena.
He proposes how to bring about the changes in self-governance, be it
energy, agriculture, transportation, peace or environmental protection
by directly challenging the law.
Richard Grossman is co-founder of CELDF, the Community Legal Defense
Fund. CELDF was formed to provide free and affordable legal services to
community-based groups and local governments working to protect their
quality of life and the natural environment. They help mount campaigns
that challenge the legal clout of corporations to overrule decisions
made by citizens for their communities and for a sustainable future.

He spoke at Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio, in November 2006.

Alex
Carey: Corporations and Propaganda
The Attack on Democracy
Alex Carey said that the people of the US
have been subjected to an unparalleled, expensive, 3/4 century long
propaganda effort designed to expand corporate rights by undermining
democracy and destroying the unions. The
20th century, he wrote, is marked by three historic developments: the
growth of democracy via the expansion of the franchise, the growth of
corporations, and the growth of propaganda to protect corporations from
democracy. Carey’s unique view of US history goes back to World War I
and ends with
the Reagan era.
Noam Chomsky dedicated his book “Manufacturing
Consent” to the memory of Alex Carey. Chomsky says that the Australian
sociologist would have written the definitive history of propaganda in
the US, had he lived to complete his work. This is a fairly complex
production with many voices, historic sound clips, and source material.
The program has been used by writers and students of history and
propaganda. Alex Carey: Taking the Risk
out of Democracy, Corporate Propaganda VS Freedom and Liberty with a foreword by Noam Chomsky was published by the
University of Illinois Press in 1995.

John Nichols
THE IMPEACHMENT OF BUSH AND CHENEY
This is a repeat of Nichols' popular November
2006 talk, a contribution to the renewed debate on impeachment.
The acclaimed author, Washington correspondent
for the Nation, and media critic John Nichols wrote a book entitled: The
Genius of Impeachment. The
author Studs Terkel said about this book: "Never within my
memory has the case for impeachment of Bush and his equally crooked
confederates been so clearly and fervently offered as John Nichols has
done in this book. They are after all our public SERVANTS who have
rifled our savings, bled our young, and challenged our sanity. And
Nichols has given us the history, the language and the arguments we
will need to do so."
John Nichols had come to San Francisco
just before the November 2006 election to urge the group of friends who
had gathered to meet him that the real political work was to begin on
the day after the election. And that work would be – he suggested - to
bring about the impeachment of Bush and Cheney.
Recorded by Maria Gilardin in San Francisco, November 1, 2006.

Daniel Ellsberg
THE THREAT OF WAR ON IRAN
When Daniel Ellsberg released the Pentagon Papers
in 1971 they revealed the US Government's lies about the war on
Vietnam. 35 years later Ellsberg received the Right Livelihood Award,
the so-called alternative Nobel Price, for “… dedicating his life to
inspiring others to follow his example.”
For the last 6 years Ellsberg has campaigned against the exercise of
executive power by the Bush administration. He calls for action to end
such Presidential violation of the constitution and to prevent an
expansion of the war in the Middle East and
an attack on Iran. He urges government insiders to come up with
the new set of Pentagon papers, to act now and not wait until they
write their memoirs. The American public needs to see the current
attack plans on Iran in order to prevent a terrible expansion of
the war in the Middle East.
He voices criticism of the new democratic congress and their support –
with few exceptions - of the Kyl/Lieberman amendment of
Sept. 2007. This bill designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps
as a terrorist organization. Opponents of the amendment are saying that
it could be used by Bush to attack Iran.
Daniel Ellsberg spoke on December 18, 2007, at the Republican Round
Table in a downtown hotel in San Francisco.
